It is a bit weird how popular this game has become, even though its just a custom game for wc3... I want to know if anyone here has played/plays it? Just to see how popular it is outside its own forums :D

Nope, I refuse to do so. You get kicked out of most servers if you start to dl anyway, so I'm not even bothering with it. I honestly don't get why everybody's playing this. I prefer the zombie survival maps, but barely anybody plays them anymore it seems. It's ashame they never fixed the bugs in rural zombie, great map.

Variation was great in the custom maps, after dota 90% seems to be dota which is ashame.

i do occasionaly, though last year i played in a few clans, now im just doing it for the fun of it. but yea, i've actually thought of trying a little article about this map..

Defense of the Ancients is a custom made map for Warcraft 3, but right now, theres more people playing it, and theres more tournaments for it, then for the original Warcraft 3, not very surprising, with a 5vs5 games with over 90 charactes, big amount of items, and such, and still being near perfectly balanced, the people behind it truly deserve praise, along with Blizzard for creating an editor this powerfull :) Going on, here in Europe, there has actually been a swedish artist who made a song about the game, and it was aired on tv (even now i still see it come by sometimes) and it shows in game footige, and some game sounds of the game.

heres the vid: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nAmddu8mCPE (the lyrics are in swedish to if you wonder why your not understanding anything) btw, this song was aired through all of Europe (i'm from the netherlands so yea)

Also, for anyone who wants to play it, dont play on Battle.net due to lag issues there (even minor ones) its not very playable there since DotA required A LOT of timing and such. theres of 50000+ players on GG client almost all DotA players, this program is very helpfull, it has account leveling, friends lists, chats, channels, banlists and such.

Counterstrike started out as a custom mod for HL... look where it is now. I remember playing it long before Valve bought it over, old maps, clunky models and all. Good times. Honestly, I'm glad that fans are making good custom content to push games where developers won't/can't/didn't.

As soladrin says, DotA's success is really due to its good design. You can tell they've really spent time tweaking gameplay variables over the versions, creating a rather unique WC3 PvP experience. I've played some other maps that were rather innovative (such as SWAT or TD) but imbalanced or uninteresting in the long run and ultimately forgettable. Mods like DotA and CS are in a whole different league, IMHO. I expect to see it on the official WCG roster anytime soon.

You have no idea how annoying that gaddamn song is if you're a swede. DotA becomes a pun on "data", meaning "computer". The horrible puns and cheeky nerdiness just keep on coming ....

Probably that song alone scares me off the entire concept ....

yea that moron for an artist has really gotten on my nerve more than once, i tell you that.. when this song was made you couldnt go 5 minutes in sweden without hearing it. (not to mention that is not the kind of people you would want representing this country)
