Does anyone miss the days when it was cool to like Sonic?

Does anyone remember those days? The days when the fanbase had not spiraled down to the level of sheer insanity and discontent that it is today? The days when there did not exist dozens of reviews, webcomics, videos, and blogs reminding everyone the world over about how much the franchise has fallen lately?

... Eternal Nothingness, is that you?

OT: I was born 2 years after the first game came out, never played any Sega consoles until I was 14, all of my friends owned N64's, didn't own a console until around 2003, and didn't play my first Sonic game till 2005 or so. So no, I don't remember.

It was cool to like Sonic when Sonic was cool. No mystery there. It's not like the criticism of late is undeserved. Sonic Team took a massive shit on the franchise. And yeah, I guess I do miss those days. If I had to choose between the days when something was good and the days when something was bad, I'm pretty sure I'd pick good. I'm pretty sure most people would. Because the recent Sonic games aren't even that hilarious kind of bad that's still entertaining in its own way. They're the tragic sort of bad. The kind of bad that's just frustrating, embarrassing, and downright intolerable.

Fuck what's cool. I can't watch a rock or metal video on Youtube without a bunch of people whining about Justin Bieber, I can't watch a Mudhoney video without someone arguing about Nirvana, and I can't like Sonic without seeing people go on about the past few years. You've just gotta learn to block them out.

Besides, it's been a good year to like Sonic. Generations kicks arse, 4:Episode 2 is apparently on the way with all the wonky feeling physics and controls gone, Sonic CD is being rereleased, it's good times.

Liking Sonic was never cool. At least not at my school. It was all about the PS1 vs. the 'Cube. Us Sony supporters pretty much dominated though. Bit sad in retrospect. Bunch of kinds beating each other up over who had better video games. Ah well, that's life I suppose.

Sonic Generations was pretty good, and Sonic Colors wasn't that bad either.

Day levels in Sonic Unleashed and 2D levels in Sonic 2K6 were okay.

I haven't played the really really really bad ones (sonic vs the black knight, etc), but I don't think the franchise has really fallen as far as everyone jokes about. Among my friends, Sonic is still very much cool, but I suppose most people don't blast hydrocity zone music in their car like us.

I would like to live through it just so I can see things like Sonic Underground on the air again, and I do miss it, but not enough to really be longing for it.

While I miss Sonic being cool, I think I miss other things being cool more, like the days of Mechwarrior/Earthsiege/G-Nome/Shattered Steel giant fighting robot games being "The thing" and also Wing Commander/Xwing vs. Tie Fighter/Tachyon the Fringe sort of "Space Combat Simulator" games being mainstream. I also miss turn-based combat things like Jagged Alliance, X-Com and Fallout Tactics...

That said, if I could get one thing back, it would be FPS games that are outside, fast-paced, great level design, etc...I guess Tribes:Ascend will hold that for me, but I would like a REAL duke 3D sequel (Not Gears of Duke).

But Sonic....Yes, I would love to be the cool underground "Sonic" lover who got all the girls because the kids talking about Mario were losers...

...You haven't played Generations yet, have you? Or else it's you, rather than OP, who's Eternal Nothingness' alt.

OT: I think Sonic's actually back on the rise. He might not be the same creature he was back in his 90s heyday, but his last few games have ranged from decent to great and anyone who says otherwise is probably attached to another franchise (be it Call of Duty, Mario or the Mega Drive Sonic games) and hates on instinct everything outside their bubble.

Damn, my eternalnothingness senses must be off or something. That's twice I've been wrong.

Back when it was cool to like Sonic, we were all kids (well, people born in the late 80's anyway).

Anway, I hear Generations is pretty good.

It might be time for that reunion after all...

Oh you know what I meant. Sonic Unleashed, that Sonic where he's a knight or something, that Sonic the Hedgehog reboot where he's after a human girl. It's like they went on a campaign to see how many elements of past Sonic games people love they could throw away and replace with new ones that are just horrible.

Waitaminute.....OP is a brand new account....uses similar rhetoric....OP IS A SPY!

Also, OT, Sonic was cool when we were kids because we were kids and didn't know any better.

The PS1 was released in 1995 (94 in Japan). Sonic was released in 1991. Sonic 2 in 1992. Both were good. Maybe you just missed them.

And you're conveniently forgetting the most important part of the story. It's called "the part where they stopped doing that". You really haven't played Generations yet.

I didn't get into Sonic games until the Dreamcast (I was too young) so I've never liked Sonic when it was cool

No, I haven't. But that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the years of shitty games which have generated this negative stigma about Sonic. You know, like OP was talking about?

Nope.

Actually I never liked sonic. I was always really big on Mario and Crash bandicoot. Then they made him talk and my child hood is now destroyed.

And my response to that statement was that it's going away. Right now, the people who would be outright still hating of people who like Sonic's new games are either those with their rose-tinted glasses glued firmly over their heads or those who think anything other than Call of Duty is "gay kiddy hipster stuff".
