Does anyone miss the days when it was cool to like Sonic?

Are you referring to the time before the fanbase had the ability to gather on something called the internet? I'm mostly sure all fanbases are awful and never satisfied.

I've always been the only one who enjoyed Sonic games, my friends and family all had nintendo consoles and I had/have still a Genesis/Mega Drive. I never got into Nintendo's titles (other than Metroid), but yeah Sonic was always great on the Genesis but once he sprung off it was bad till the Day levels in Unleashed, Colors was great and Generations is amazing. I'm not rabid fan however, I felt after the Genesis it was a lot of garbage but I wasn't exactly upset since I have his original games which are amazing even today.

I've never been one to really give someone trouble for liking a game. Considering Sonics track record ( Sonic 06, Secret Rings, Black Knight, Heroes, Shadow The Hedgehog) I'm not surprised why people were upset. I am surprised there's complaints on Generations being it's so damn good.

Yikes! Eternalnothingness was THAT kind of guy? The kind of Sonic fan who hates on and condemns everyone?! I was mistaken for that guy?!

Part of me wishes I just kept my mouth shut about Sonic everywhere. If it is just to avoid arguing with any Sonic fan over the internet (My Golden Rule: Never Argue On the Internet), it's that now!
Oh, there's more to it than that. Eternalnothingness wants to be writer--a video game writer to be exact--and at first when he started out he was trying to prove how awesome Sonic was because the characters in his story are also bipedal animals ("Sakura the Rabbit," for example). Then after enough people told him the Sonic characters are total shit, he made thread after thread after thread discussing why and how they are so bad. It's like he's now convinced the key to writing anything good is to not make it like Sonic.

Just about everyone on this forum has told him exactly what he needs to be told. That you learn to write by taking classes and reading good literature, not from dissecting bad video game writing. That no matter how hard you try if your entire cast is talking animals with half-assed Japanese names in a half-assed Japanese world your story will look like nothing more than a weaboo's wet dream. But he simply does. Not. Take. Criticism. You can know that he knows you're right when he stops responding. But then later he just makes another thread, usually similar to the issues addressed in the previous thread, but completely missing the point of all the issues he's not completely ignoring. It's just quite sad at this point. I'd call him a troll, but I've never seen a troll keep such a straight face for so long.
So he's a wannabe writer and designer, and a weeabo? He can't be a troll... just way too much dedication towards what he thinks...

Man I am so sorry I got confused with him. It's already bad enough that he takes the Sonic games way too seriously. The stories in the games, if they are ever more developed more than "STOP ROBOTNIK/EGGMAN" tend to be riddled with unintentionally funny moments, not something a guy with a big ego should base his career off of...

On an unrelated note... the less said about Sonic fan characters and Sonic fan fics... the better, I've seen enough. And I thought it was bad enough already knowing someone in real life who's in on the fan characters and fan fiction... she wasn't bad looking either, and I even considered dating her at one point, but then she brings up her obsession with her Sonic fan characters and that was clear enough of a warning sign... ugh.
Call me shallow if you want, but I think I have good reason.

Sonic was only ever cool way back on the Sega Mega Drive. Way back before a generation of freaks grew up on the internet who considered anthropomorphic cartoon animals to be sex symbols.

They could take a leaf out of Kirby's book and take it back for the kids but that's kind of challenging with what a Google image search unearths when you look him up. I mean you can find Kirby porn if you try hard enough but it isn't the same 'cottage industry' style porn factory that can be found centered around Sonic and his menagerie of pals.

They would have to make some pretty damn special games to undo the wide scale brand destruction that Sonic 'fans' have wrought upon the franchise.

Damn... I still feel really shocked and burned for how this topic began...

I spent a long time making sure I posted this topic without coming off as pretentious or hateful, and then before I know it, I find out I accidentally posted the topic 80 minutes before I worked out my opening message! So it ends up being a double post... with my real OP being in the duplicate post!!!

And to make matters worst, it posted the first paragraph of my rough draft of an original post, meaning that it easily got taken the wrong way!

And even worse, I get mistaken for this eternalnothingness fellow... ensuring that I would never get taken seriously. I know I'm not him, but doesn't feel like anyone is convinced.

Damn... that's a real downer, man...

Meh, I still like Sonic, I just try to avoid the crazy fans. (Then again, I tend to like stuff other people don't so, whatever...)

Well, I remember sonic adventure 2, so I guess maybe yes? Either way, I would prefer if nintendo hadn't bastardised all of their franchises.

The day they get rid of his 'friends' and his voice is the day I will buy another Sonic game.

Not before.
What he said.

I was more of PC man back in them days when he was the hot stuff but could appreciate how fun the games were.

...then he got a voice and a rad attitude.

Made me quite hostile to all hedgehogs for some reason.

Sonic is still cool. All you have to do is pop the cartridge into your Genesis and pick up the controller. Oh wait... we're talking about the new games? Oh my.

Though, I tried Generations for a few minutes and it wasn't that bad.

NO. I only like him because he's uncool, he represents your childhood bubble gum fairy tale dreams raped by the modern corporations as they pimp him out on the street or some shit like that, I don't know is liking sonic because he's uncool in yet or are we still hating him because he's uncool?

Not as much. By all mean I got nothing against Sonic but when the days when he was cool and all, my high school mates (now my ex) used to mock/ shun me repeatedly for owning Nintendo consoles.
Still I would of love to seen their faces during Sonic downfall and mock them about it. (HA! Who got the last laugh now?)

Seriously, Sonic may have had a bad patch, but my god he has come back!
Ok... I seriously had a smile on my face through the entire emerald hill zone video. I need to pick up this game in the near future...

I liked Sonic after it stopped being cool...

I actually got more interested in the series after watching some of the anime series, Sonic X. You've probably never heard of it before. *Puts on hipster sunglasses*

But it seems that Generations has made a better impression. I just wish they'd fire those god-awful voice actors and put somebody that can put more emotion into their speaking. Jesus Christ, Spongebob's actor puts a hell of a lot more emotion in his acting.

But now that they've won back a lot of the fanbase, maybe they can make an even better impression with the next. I've been watching the playthrough of Sonic 06 and...Mother of...terrible. The graphics are a bit choppy, especially when they speak, the voices ear-grating, and the dialogue...

Yeah, I know about Sonic X. I'm not the petty kind of guy, but there was that one character who sucked out a lot of fun to be had in that series: Chris Thorndyke! Seriously, that kid was unnecessary; he sucked up as much screen time as he could so we could "sympathize" with his first-world problems, but ended up being more clingy than Amy and whinier than everyone else.

About the voices... wha? The voices are bad? They voices in Generations are a HUGE improvement. Especially Sonic's. I don't hate Griffith, but man his voice acting was the worst out of the voice acting of Sonic's, being stuck with the weakest lines, not having as much punch in his voice as Drummond or Smith, and that he voiced Sonic around the time Sega's writers went CRAZY with writing lines and voices; it's like they didn't want the characters to ever SHUT UP and we'd get bored unless Sonic was yelling out pointless chatter like "THAT TORNADO IS CARRYING A CAR", and Eggman's repeating "YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY: THE MORE THE MERRIER"!

Ok you know what? Bottom-line: DON'T HAVE THE CHARACTERS TALK SO FRIGGIN' MUCH. One, superbly delivered line is much better than a dozen, pointless, cheesy and weak lines delivered in rapid succession. That's what hurt the otherwise, sub-par 4-kids voice acting team (Except Dan Green, he's always awesome), the writers always wanted them to spout pointless chatter.

Many of the other voices are also improved: at least Rogue's new voice actress makes her sound like she's supposed to sound, rather than the old, worn-out hooker voice her old voice actress had; at least Shadow has more emotion (even though i think it's better that, like i said before, they shouldn't talk too much).

You know what I'll stop right there.

Just go search his name in the search bar, and prepare to be frightened/amused.
And also ignore my posts in his threads because I was being stupid.

Anyway, more on-topically, I thought it became cool to like Sonic again now that Colours/Generations have come out?
Speaking of which, I really need to get Generations some time.
