Does anyone on the Escapist use a Mac?

As a hardcore PC gamer who can fix his own computer, does minimal movie/photo editing and has little to no extra income per month... no, no I do not.

If you like it, though, then who am I to say anything.

*laughs hysterically* Look, I have no issue with people who use macs. My girlfriend's family have a Mac as their main family computer. I however have many problems with them as machines. The design, the mouse, and the fragility of the keyboard to name just a few small things.

I own a PC, but most of the computers at my university are macs, so I get a decent amount of use out of them. For like web browsing and word processing and stuff they're fine. I have a few problems with the keyboard layout being unfamiliar to me and the actual mac keyboards themselves but they're not bad, just I think a bit overpriced.

I have an iPad which I love. I prefer it to my PC at the moment because it does everything I need it to do (college-wise) and it's easier to carry around.

I've always preferred Macs but when I needed to get a laptop I couldn't afford one.

You couldn't afford a laptop but you could afford an ipad? I'm REALLY confused.

Sure you can't play very many games with him, you have to spend a shitload of money to get his stuff and I'm you may at some point look at some guy riding on the back of superman and slightly regret you decision but...I mean, he's the fucking batman.

PCs are not licensed by IBM. They made the standard for them but they don't get cash from them at all.

The results won't be less than impressive. Again, the only thing special about Apple is their OS. As they use normal parts from AMD and Intel it means you will get the same performance on a custom built machine as you will an apple machine.

I learned fine, my Economics teacher was using an example from 30 years ago clearly.
Wouldn't surprise me though his idea of teaching was "read the powerpoint".

I seeeee. My PC is not custom built, it's pretty mediocre tbh, it gets the job it's required to do done and not much else. I only replaced my old one because my old one was clicking when it powered up and I took it as a decidedly bad sign.

Yup. I use my Mac for all my video editing and business stuff, and switch over to Windows for gaming. It's a good setup.

Fixing something in Windows takes a quick google search.

The good thing about windows failing is that it's so consistent at failing that you have a big chance of your problem being fixed years before you had it.

I view t as three levels of simplicity the simpelest is a mac I think, it works staight out of the box but if you want to you can put windows on it as well, then you have windows, It's simpler than Linux witch is the most complicated system I know.
I use windows 7 now and it didn't crash , but it can get complicated.

OT: I don't mind mac's for editing and stuf like that but my pc feels more personal to me than a mac.

I attempted to use a Mac the other week at uni while waiting for my mate to finish her work....never again....nothing would maximise to the full screen, the mouse was terribly slow even when i maxed the sensitivity, the keyboard was too thin (too much like laptops), not to mention the buttons to turn it on are on the back what genius designed that (i had to get my friend to tell me how to turn it on).


I don't see the appeal, i went in to my first experience with an open mind and now i know i will never use Mac, i'd rather use linux and thats saying something considering i don't like that because of the lack of support (fine otherwise).

There just an overpriced pc that tries to sell itself as a virus free enviroment, the best media machine and user friendly. I think i'll stick to Windows it works alot better or at least it does for me even in the Adobe Suite enviroment.

I have a Mac. As a person who edits movies, pictures, music, Mac's are godsend.

This is just a question out of curiosity, the avoidance of a flame war would be preferred. Basically, I was given a new mac for my birthday as a surprise, I didn't ask for it, but I must say that I am pleasantly surprised with how well it runs. I've been windows most of my life so it will take some getting use to, but I'm pretty pleased with it personally. So escapist how many of you use macs?

I would never have gotten a mac if it weren't for school. Yes, it is a piece of crap for gaming for the most part, but Macbook pro's are powerful machines capable of doing quite a lot.

As a film/animation student I get a lot of use from my mac, and it was well worth the money, although I do have my PC and my consoles for gaming.

I got pretty much the lowest one possible, the 2.4ghz one. It runs really well though so I have to encounter any significant problems with it.

My roommate keeps a triple-boot desktop system (WinXP, OSX snow leopard and Ubuntu-gnome), and has a MacBook Pro... me personally, I don't have much of a use for apple products of any stripe (I'm a Mint-KDE user at the moment dual-booted with XP), but I do know a way you can have your cake and eat it too with a decent Apple PC, assuming you have a copy of windows lying around somewhere.

Nah, I've never been a fan of Macs. I like Windows; it's unreliable, but at least you can rely on it to be unreliable at all times, and it's not a ballache to either get it fixed or fix it yourself.

I've a friend who does a Media course at Coventry Uni, he says that Macs are awesome for editing, but seeing as I don't edit stuff it's not really much of a recommendation for me

I have a MAC. Works like a (very reliable) toaster, press button, get profit. Doesn't work? Google and pray. Of course you Bootcamp the thing to get the game goodness, but i wouldn't use windows for any sort of editing or schoolwork.

I just tried to get my sister's to play a .avi file... It refused...

Possibly the 432nd reason I have personally found to not use one.

You need to use the VLC media player to get .avi to play. It won't come up with the normal default player.


I was willing to learn this much computer information because I would be damned if I would let a file extension keep me from watching my episodes of Doctor Who.

Having to use an alternative kind of throws the "Hi i'm a mac, easy and intuitive" argument away doesn't it?

VLC came on the computer, you just have to set it as default. It's not that hard. I set a computer on fire once by pressing a button, I think you can navigate a drop-down menu if I can.

I'm anti-apple because of a lot of things they do, but I've used a Mac and it did what I wanted it to do at the time, though a bit harder because I didn't know how to use it.

Windows works just fine for me. It only breaks when I'm being an idiot and I know it. And sometimes when there's driver issues, but that just comes with being able to customize the hardware.

Also Linux has all the advantages Mac has, being Unix based an all. So I have no reason to ever use a Mac.

BTW, media editing is a software thing that has nothing to do with the OS. Just because Macs come with better editing software than Windows out of the box doesn't mean I can't get the same or even better quality software for Windows later.

I have never understood people that get Macs for everyday computing. They cost 2-3 times as a similar non-Apple computer, and I honestly don't think that the Mac OS is enough to justify this cost. I also wouldn't say that Macs are easier to use than Windows PCs to any significant degree, due to the fact that when something goes wrong on a Mac (and things have gone wrong for me) it is much more difficult to fix the issue, and Windows (especially Windows 7) really isn't that difficult to use.

Also, a big reason that I, personally, don't like Macs is the fact that they try to do everything for me. I like to do most things myself so I can make sure they're done the way I want them to be done.

On an unrelated note, anybody that says "I don't use a PC, I use a Mac" needs to be devoured by space ostriches. Macs are Personal Computers!!!
