If they manage to pull of the Silmarillion I'll be impressed.

Bilbo was the same age as Frodo when he left Hobbiton (30) and a Long Expected Party was celebrating Bilbo's 111th birthday.
um....no. Bilbo was 50 when he traveled with Thorin's company. No one would let a hobbit barely out of his tweens go on an adventure! And Frodo was 51 when he left the Shire with The One Ring.

I think they are still making two films.

One is the Hobbit and the other a sort of bridge between the Hobbit and LoTR.

...So... they're adding Legolas and a bunch of other characters to appease the squealing fangirls who want to watch pretty blonde elves bounce around in tights? And just all out making up characters?

Ugh.

I know this is supposed to be awesome, but...

Does anyone really WANT to sit through a whole movie which consists of a company of dwarves yelling at things for most of the time? I really thought that one dwarf in the whole LotR trilogy was enough. Just one. And this movie will feature a group of them. The trilogy dwarf (forgot his name) was mainly there for comic relief, from what I saw. I've yet to see a dwarf be sufficiently badass.

Also, I'm wondering how Frodo ends up making an apperance... He wasn't even born yet when Bilbo went to Lonely Mountain. Bilbo was the same age as Frodo when he left Hobbiton (30) and a Long Expected Party was celebrating Bilbo's 111th birthday. Legolas and Sauruman don't make appearances either but they're listed in the credits too.
Really, the Silmarillion would more or less be a series of short movies rather than an epic of any kind but the best stories would have to be of Beren & Luthien, and the Children of Hurin. Those are all I see that could be made into films of significant length and the rest of the Silmarillion would have to be told through background info throughout those films

The Silmarillion would be a very hard movie to pull of in full do to the somewhat fragmented nature of it :/

To the OP I swear the hobbit had been confirmed for over a year now, as I swear last summer they were discussing issues with the unions in NZ or something along those lines.

I think just about everyone already knows about this.

I, however, won't be satisfied until they make a Silmarillion movie.

Just kidding, that would be a terrible idea. I love the Silmarillion (my favorite book of all time), but it is absolutely not movie material

EDIT: ninja'd. About 20 times.

Short answer, he appears as the narrator of sorts reading Bilbo's "There and Back Again".

Also, on Legolas, there's already debates aboout his appearence and whether or not it was in the book, I doubt it'll be much more than a cameo.

See the thing about Peter Jackson's film making is that he's very sentimental and he loves making throwbacks to his previous films. For example, in King Kong one of the animal cages in the ship is labeled "Sumatran Rat Monkey" and anyone who's seen Braindead/Dead Alive might get that reference. Also casting Sean Astin as Sam was a somewhat sentimental decision as Jackson worked with his father, John Astin in The Frightners, (and Sean's daughter appeared as a Hobbit child in Return of the King meaning Jackson has worked with three generations of the Astin family.) Also, like Alfred Hitchcock, he appears in all his films. The Hobbit gives him licence to indulge a little bit by including characters from the LotR films that may only ever had minor roles if any at all in The Hobbit and Legolas is a good example.
