SKA!

Long live it. I have all RBF, Catch 22, and Streetlight albums, and have pandora stations with The Toasters, Mighty Might Bosstones and etc.

Yeah, I'll occasionally listen to Ska. Mainly the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish.

It's frustrating, particularly because while two tone 2nd wave stuff to me anyway felt like a pure exchanging of musical culture, 3rd wave (a LOT of it, but not all) felt to me like...simply appropriation. No real respect shown to the forbears so much as ripping it apart and using its legacy. Again, not all.
Yeah but part of that was that late Island and early TwoTone were contemporaries so exchange was possible. TwoTone bands could check out the latest Island sounds and vice versa. Third wave pretty much came along after both Island and TwoTone had become obscure, 'dead' genres. They had very few contemporaries from within the genre so their exchange was with other genres.

Snip. (I'm quoting you so you can see the upcoming list of bands)
Also, of course, i listen to a lot of ska. My favorite is Streetlight (mentioned in this thread a lot), but you can't forget the bosstones, the specials, Big D and the Kids' Table, Less Than Jake, the Blue Meanies, Mephiskapheles, the aquabats, RX Bandits, Catch 22, the Skatalites, the toasters, mu330, voodoo glow skulls, reel big fish, and, like the OP mentioned, some swing-oriented bands like the Cherry Poppin Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers. And that's only some of the big names!

I defined Less Than Jake as Ska during high school, and nearly got the shit kicked out of me, by some LTJ fans.
Anyone know what that was all about?

I don't really listen to Ska that much, assuming that Bob Marley doesn't count.

Ska is awesome, Give Streetlight Manifesto and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones a try. My friends know about it too, but it isn't popular anymore, cause there aren't many big ska bands.

I absolutely love ska. One of my favorite genres of music. I'm going to Warped this year mainly to see Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto. There's actually a local ska band that I love called Filippenko and this [http://www.myspace.com/filippenko] is their MySpace. Great band and I've seen them live twice.

Thing with Ska is there's two kinds. Really good Ska and really bad Ska, and it's near impossible to distinguish the two.
