When i was a younger teenager i remember [footnote]Christ, saying that makes me feel old...[/footnote] how MSN used to be really popular. It was the bane of teachers and parents who saw it as distracting us from our homework, and I remember spending most of my evenings chatting away on MSN, making friends with people who i wouldn't have normally met, and all in all, having a fun time.

Anyway, then i go off to university. And due to some over-zealous and confusing firewalling on the university internet system, which has royally buggered my laptop over, i couldn't use MSN whilst i was at university. I eventually come back home, and nobody seems to be on MSN anymore.... Typically there is less than half a dozen people online for me now, and all those old friends i used to talk to are no longer online, so i'm losing touch with them.

So, do you often use MSN, or indeed Skype, Yahoo or AIM or whatever? Do you think these instant messaging services are less popular than they used to be? Or are my friends just being anti-social?
cellphone mate. it's all about texting now. and yeah, facebook and the such have funner (i can also look at your pics later) interactions.
Heh, but instant messanger doesn't charge you every time you send a message.

I understand the appeal of facebook, i after all have a facebook account, but i mainly use it to see my friends posts and pictures, but i don't contribute much to Facebook itself- i don't want to bore people with status messagers saying "I'm listening to x band" or "I did y and z today and it was funny". Still, considering facebooks popularity, its hardly surprising that instant messaging over facebook is so popular too, dispite it being glitchy as hell. From reading some of the posts here, it seems like it depends what kind of friends you've got. Most of mine seem to have moved away from MSN...

I'm 15 and use it everyday
though I have many contacts there's only about 3-4 people ill actually have conversations with

most people dont seem to be able to carry a conversation past "what's up?" "nm you?"
i don't usually bother with those people.

also facebook chat is really annoying >_> it's for people i don't have on msn because i don't like them to pester me

I use Pidgin, which I have logging into AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and Google Talk. I don't use facebook IM unless I'm actually on Facebook, and although it has support for IRC, I use other IRC clients.

That said, most of my friends use AIM, but a couple use MSN.

Steam is used a bit, but I really don't see the point when I play most of my games in full-screen windows and alt-tabbing to an IM window is just the same as shift-tabbing to an IM window.

I still use MSN, I start it every time I turn on my PC. All of my friends have it, and seeing as I killed my facebook in order to be more social (Oh, the irony!), it's the only way to contact friends other than using my phone.

Occasionally, yes. Mainly the occasion is when I'm very bored early in the morning, once eveyr couple of months.

After facebook and twitter and all those websites came around, I'd say MSN has lost alot of mainstream popularity. I'm on MSN all day though (aslong as my computer is on... Which is all day :p) I think it's a nice way to stay in touch with people (long distance internet friends, and real life friends). I'm frequently talking with people on MSN who I've met through games, such as World of Warcraft or Age of Conan etc.

I still use MSN. Since on Facebook you get people who used to know you in school, work, childhood and pretty much anyone can come across you.
I prefer to use MSN to chat to people since Facebook chat doesn't seem to want to work alot and I find more privacy in using MSN or WLM. Whichever you want to call it.

I still use MSN/WLM when I need to talk to someone at a distance, as I don't use social sites very often, and don't own a cell phone (what I see as main communication for people nowadays...it's what I've seen a lot of people use to talk to people even on those sites...so, there's perhaps a connection between the two). But for those of my friends I know who play as many games as myself, I use Xfire, in combination with Steam & Ventrilo. I've used Xfire for years, before Valve felt the need to add messaging to more than just Counter-Strike. Wow, it's pretty amazing, looking back how much not just the real world, but how much digital life has changed in the past ten years. Good thread!
