Does being stupid on forums matter to you?

Nope. I have a pretty hard time taking one of dozens of gaming forums seriously.

In other cases, like the forums used for an IRC D&D campaign I'm involved in, I'll be serious, sure. But this? Not so much, except in the Escapist-content section.

i fall in the middle.
i like to have fun, but i try to avoid being blatany stupid or sounding racist or something. (lol, racism: not just for whitey anymore)
most of the time, i just read a few posts before joining to gauge the users' response styles to see what flies on a forum and what doesn't.

Integrity matters a lot to me, which is why I have my actual name on my profile. (Note that I am neither a minor, nor a woman, nor pretty enough to be gay bait, so I'm at little risk posting my name. For many people here that isn't true and could even be dangerous.) It bothers me if I state something inaccurate or stupid, but it happens; everyone mis-remembers or badly states something from time to time, you just man up and try to do better. And like Asymptote Angel, sometimes I type a big post and, upon proof-reading, discover part or all of it is best deleted.

It's a forum where people discuss video games, and various off-topic stuff. I have some trouble, personally, taking yet another corner of the internet with anything other than a grain of salt. I can understand that the moderation and administration team has to take it seriously, to an extent, but I've seen places where people make far too much out of a series of loosely organized discussions between a plethora of primarily anonymous individuals, and utter death threats and such, simply due to disputes over forums. About that time, I stopped taking the interwebs too seriously.

And like I said, the Escapist content section is a different story altogether. I mean, that's where it's a direct extension of the actual website, which, being something that various respectable and professional people do for a living, is serious.

When your engaged to an English Major student who flips out over typos, grammar errors, and the like, you start to convert over to the "Spell correctly, make sense, or go to hell" side. AKA...The Darker side. Not the Dark Side. I'm already there. The Darker side. It makes the Dark Side look friendly.
It should be "you're".

It depends upon the subject if I take the forum seriously or not. Regardless, outright idiocy has never been something I abide quietly.

I feel that being stupid leaves an irremovable stain on your reputation in certain communities, thankfully you can simply leave them and start somewhere else, learning from past mistakes.

But I find it hard to tell if I'm being stupid at times. I mean, I post a comment in a forum and everyone else gets quoted and replied to and I'm like "Shit, I must not have made a very good point".

Maybe I just have a frail ego?

I generally have my online name everywhere I go, 'cept here, so I try to not be stupid on the off chance that someone I don't like on a forum goes to another one that I go to and calls me out on my idiodicy/jackassedness there.

Simple answer: No

Long Answer: No, because if you're super serious all the time, life gets boring. I like mixing things up, I'm stupid one post, intelligent the next. While I like befriending the world, if you don't like me or my style...oh well, there are like a billion other people online to talk to.

i get a little worried when i'm the last post on a thread in about 3hours. i feel that i said something disagreeable, and killed the thread. but then i find another good thread like PICTURE BATTLE!!! there hasn't been a really good recent thread since PICTURE BATTLE!!!, and PICTURE BATTLE!!! seems like a nice place to spend a few minutes besting people in a PICTURE BATTLE!!!, good times, good times.

Even if it's not on forums, I still feel bad if I say something stupid, which is stupid because I don't know who the hell I'm talking to and they don't know me. I haven't said anything stupid on forums but I have on Youtube and Deviantart, but I've grown up and started seeking out more intelligent people (like you guys on The Escapist ;D) so I refrain from leaping in and saying something dumb; unlike the hooting morons on Youtube. I'm going to sum this up, even if people don't know who you are and you say something dumb, you still look like an idiot.

You can't have a frail ego and survive on line. If it helps, lots of times I read something I agree with, but I don't usually post or quote it just to agree, only if I want to agree and expand on that person's point (or if it's a profound point, or if I greatly disagree..) Point is, quoting just to agree just wastes space, so it doesn't mean your point wasn't valid if no one quotes it.
