Right so, after waiting for the release, buying the game, popping it into my Xbox360 and being generally very excited, I am about an hour into the game and... meh.

For some reason, the game seems very... slow. Clunky. Not very dynamic. I mean I am a HUGE fan of zombie games (Dead Rising, Left4Dead, hell even the ghouls out of Fallout 3 gives me a kick) but for some reason I am finding it really hard to get in to.

So the question is, my fellow Escapists, for those out there who are or have played Dead Island, have you felt this way? Does it get better? Does it pick up a bit of momentum or interest further in?

Just so I know if it's worth sinking my teeth into.

Thanks guys.

Well...in some ways, yes. You start finding better weapons and fighting more enemies, which adds a lot to the game, but if its the actual structure of the game that is bothering you then there isn't much to say.

Give it a little longer, try to at least get to the town. That'll give you time to play around with weapon creating and mods, drive cars, see some of the boss enemies. If it hasn't grabbed you by then, I don't think it will.

Honestly that depends. Are you playing it alone, or with a group? When I was playing the game with two of my friends, the hours flew by. However when I'm playing it alone I can barely go 20 minutes before I get bored.

I played by myself and I'm at the second act I think. I'm completely bored with it and I'm no longer interested in it. I was completely let down by the game with it's glitches, and useless perks. I was also disappointed that the Bloodbath arena still isn't released.

I've been told that it is a VERY different game at like, Chapter8, than it is in Chapter2. Don't know if that means BETTER or not.

I myself got disinterested in Chapter2, and started working through other older games i havent played, while waiting for a friend of mine to become persuadable to buy it and co-op with me =P

I found it got better when i got to the town, ...it slides into tedium by yourself though.

With friends though, it's a god damn blast. We had lot's of tense moments with just me and a friend.

2 people seems to be the sweet spot. 3 and 4 is too easy, 1 is boring.

We're only on chapter 3 though...he got busy :\

Hmmm, general consensus then is that on my tod, it's not worth going any further. Bit of a bummer, been looking forward to this release for quite some time. Maybe i can find a friend to playz with me :/

Prepare to be somewhat disappointed. The further you get into the game the fewer zombies you actually fight. Once you get into the town you'll start meeting up with Rams (which aren't really very zombie-ish, and in my opinion, don't make any sense in the game's context) and human gang members with firearms. The further you get from the town, the more humans with firearms you end up fighting.

It goes from being an average zombie game in the early portions to a below-average shooter toward the end.

Overall I had fun with the game, although primarily from playing Co-Op with my husband and laughing with him at all the bad accents and horror cliches... That said, Dead Island is a pretty mediocre game on its own merits, so it really isn't for everyone. Especially not the solo zombie apocalypse survivors out there.

Look at it like Borderlands, or even FEAR 3 or Resident Evil 5. On your own, it isn't really that special and, while functional, doesn't do much to grab you. It won't change or vary much.

With a co-op partner (or three) the variation borne of playing and co-operating with other living human beings makes it a much more tolerable, even downright fun experience. I have no issues with calling Dead Island one of the most fun games released this year...in co-op.

In single player, it's honestly a bit crap, with occasional high notes.
