Does gender matter in video games?

Gender is just one piece of the puzzle of making a memorable or effective character. It doesn't really matter as long as it's well done.

As a male, I think the concept of playing as a female is interesting. Don't get me wrong, Solid Snake, Leon Kennedy, and Ezio Auditore wouldn't be the same if they were female, but in the same vein, Lara Croft wouldn't have the same appeal if she were male.

The only thing that bothers me about female pcs and just female characters in general is that most of the time they're purely for fanservice or as a love intrest for your rugged, more combat capable man character. Prime example, take Tifa out of Final Fantasy 7, what do you have? The same game, just one less pair of giant tits.

It doesn't really matter to me, depending on the game I play female characters when given the choice. Playing a female in an FPS tends to make you a smaller, harder to hit target. Playing a female in an RPG means you get some eyecandy while you're playing the game. I played all the way through Oni which doesn't give you a choice of character and forces you to play as a woman and thought it was a good game.

You ever try using the shapeshifter code? Konoko's one of the more righteous asskickers in the game, especially since she's got a comparatively huge number of knockdown attacks.

Yea, I did after I finished the game the first time through. It did make things more interesting being able to switch to other characters at will. I really wish the game didn't run like shit in Windows 7 or I'd play through it again.

Doesnt make much of a difference except in a visual manner. I tend to find both interchangeable. I have about a 50/50 spread of male to female toons in WoW and this is completly based of the combat animations. I tend to find the visuals of a female character more appealing in most cases, I'm a guy so if I am starting at a screen for hours at a time it may as well be a female I am starting at :D

As for the strong females kicking ass in shooters, Samus Aran - Metroid

For some reason, I generally prefer male protagonists in video games. Female protagonists don't generally interest me.

Doesn't matter to me, so long as we aren't just playing as girls for the sake of eye candy. I prefer actual characterization, thank you.

It's only bothered me in one instance: Final Fantasy X-2.

I was really looking forward to a continuation of the story and the world I enjoyed so much. But I blame not being able to get into it on my opinion of the only three playable characters being insufferably annoying chics.

I thought the character customization however, had a lot of promise.
That game was...disasteriffic

OT: Not really, I don't see why it should matter what gender the characters are as long as the world they are in treats them appropriately to the background of the world they are in.

For me it depends,if im playing an action game then yes i would like to be a guy, however if its another type of genre then not really.
I only really care if my character has relations with NPCs, Like in Mass Effect. Being the female Shepard and having my "buddies" like Garrus and Thane (I still don't like Jacob) hitting on me was extremely uncomfortable. It's like talking to a woman about things better not mentioned here, only to find that "she" is actually a "he".

Otherwise? No.

It doesn't matter to gameplay. It does matter for immersion. If you don't feel like you're the main character of the game you won't give a shit when he/she is in danger, and it's very difficult for me to relate with a female character on that level.

No, it doesn't matter at all. I don't care who the playable character is; if its a fun game, I'll play it.

Could you define "matter"? Do you mean is it notable or is it important or even does it effect the story, just a little ambiguous there.
