This thread scares me for sure.
On topic, its a general fact that as you grow up, you find it easier to seperate fiction and reality, so you find horror less scary. Its not neccesarily the movie's fault.

Have you tried Penumbra: Overture?

It came as part of the pay as much as you want Humble Bundle, and assuming your comp didn't fuck with the graphics like mine did (you could sort of see the purple square pattern thingy under the textures) it becomes scary in a "making you paranoid" sort of way. Wherein you are afraid to open doors and keep your flashlight on (attracts monsters and drains battery).

Nah, horror hasn't been genuinely frightening to me for quite a time - too much emphasis placed on jump shocks and scenes and settings so damned dark that I can't see a bloody thing. Hell, if you sneak up behind someone and scream BOO in their ear they are going to jump, and then (if there is any justice) they will pimp slap the shit out of you.

I am forced to conclude that the things that are really frightening are the things that you cannot quite see and that your imagination is allowed to extrapolate. I sort of consider it like the old IT mini series. Yes clowns can be fucking freaky but we all know that "It" was never really a clown, and when you finally see "It' it is just a suck-ass bullshit special effect and you feel a bit cheated.

The last time that I was really frightened by anything in the "horror" genre was when I watched a TV drama called "Ghostwatch" many years ago and while you can see it on Youtube it hasn't aged at all well and was nothing like seeing it live and not really being sure if it was real or not.

I miss scary :(

I recently watched Paranormal Activity alone with the lights off, and aside from the ending, it was actually pretty good; my heart was beating through my sternum for the entire film, and it was kind of creepy without being loud and violent.

Good horror needs to be built on archetypal and primordial fears inherent to humanity. That's why SH2 worked so well, it catered to fear of the dark, claustrophobia and a neat list of other scares that have been around since time immemorial.

You're right, good horror is scarce these days, but you should give Alan Wake a spin, it was refreshingly unnerving.

I think it's gotten bad now because so many "creative minds" are so focused on repeating the same cliches. For example, the new Freddy movie. I'm not saying it's bad (haven't seen it so I won't judge) but it's not an original idea. Stop trying to revamp nostalgia, "jump scares", and blood bath scenes. There are still diamonds in the rubble. I liked "Paranormal Activity" a lot. Also, check out "Stir of Echoes" and "The Others", thought those were also pretty dang good. Oh, uh..and scary games? Well, I think that's now a lost cause. I think movies will come back around first...sorry for rambling. Also, after Silent Hill 2, very little will scare you.

Never been scared for real in a long time. But if it counts: Requiem for a Dream scared me like hell and I felt miserable afterwards.

On a side note, people do post in your threads, so don't whine.

I haven't seen many modern horror movies, but from the trailers they just seem to be "Holy shit, 3D axe murdering! Boobs! 3D boobs! Boobs! Axe murdering! Popcorn!"

[sub]"BOOBS!"[/sub]

Honestly, horror movies have never scared me much. People who make movies don't seem to grasp the subtleties of horror. It's all about slashers and monsters eating people. They ignore pacing, mood and atmosphere.
I read H.P. Lovecraft. That's scary stuff.

Movies don't, most "horror" movies these days rely on things jumping out going "Boo!" rather than suspense. I find it tedious.

Books can still be quite scary.

It can, but only if it is true horror, and not just cheap jumps.
