Eventually we'll accept genetic modification, then we'll be able to artificially produce more variation in the homo genus than ever before in history.

Unless another form of similar creatures comes around quickly, then yes. To make up for the lack of content on this post, here's an insane fact. Some baboons take dogs as pets. That's right, pets. They drag them off while they are babies (pretty horrible to watch) and then treat them as members of their baboon packs. They groom them, a sign that they've been accepted by a male, and feed them. In exchange the dogs watch over them at night, and defend them, even against wild dogs.

It certainly is. You can find some really amazing things on the internet. If you don't already, try visiting OMGfacts.com, they've got some pretty neat stuff over there.

there's a thing called evolution.
we're probably going to try that.
assuming we don't blow ourselves up.

The reason the other members of the Homo genus are extinct is because they had to compete with us. There are approximately 7,000,000,000 humans on the planet, and that number is growing. By what measure are we "dying off"?
Well, we managed to all but annihilate an entire set of similar species within a few thousand years. That's unprecedented in the entire history of the world. The Homo Genus ends with us. Many of the other species within Homo Genus lived simultaneously with one another, but they're all gone. We have no competition, no separate species to contend with us for dominance. After us, there is no one left from our biological group to replace us. We might extend our reach and our existence for millions of years, but once we as a species ceases to be, that's it for the Homo Genus.
youre just assume new types of homo genus dont arise between that time.Evolution my friend.

The only place new Homo Genus can come from now is from us. We are the only ones left. Anything that comes after will be an evolution of Homo Sapiens, not a separate species. They will be a continuation, but it won't broaden out the genus. The odds of two separate homo species being born of a single homo species would be next to impossible.
You need to go back and study evolution some more.

this is how ALL species started.

Each new species is a mutation of an existing species. An evolution of Homo Sapiens will be a seperate species!

The definition of a seperate species isn't what it evolved from, but rather that it is biologically incompatible with other people.

(Seperate species cannot have children. Things like donkeys and mules, tigers and lions and the like kind of show some exceptions, but any such offspring are always infertile.)

And aside from that, a new species of the Homo genus will by definition broaden the genus. The only way this won't be the case is if Homo Sapiens die out after the new species takes hold.

A little hint: A species that 'evolves' is no longer the same species. And there is no possible way for a species to evolve in it's entirety in one go, immediately replacing it's predecessor. (Thus it can't be a continuation of the same species, AND a replacement. - That'd simply mean we're still just Homo Sapiens with somewhat altered genetics from our ancestors.)
You get a new species because some members of an existing species have mutated sufficiently to become a seperate group. That means the 'old' species will still be around in almost all cases.
The older species might die out pretty quickly, but that still doesn't mean the older species 'evolved' into the newer one.

Either wolves or dolphins possibly. They are the most intelligent animals...

And a slight chance of Crows/Ravens. Seriously, those fuckin birds are smarter than ~30% of americans.

As much as I'd like to spend the next few hours typing up a post speculating on the different aspects of this question, I'll try and keep it short(ish).

To start off, I'd just like to say that I don't think that we as a species are going anywhere anytime soon. Homo sapiens has only been at it for about 200,000 years and I think we've still got a good run of it, as we seem to be the planet's most successful species so far.

However, our society does seem to be getting a little tipsy. We humans seem to have this idea in our heads that the rise and fall of civilizations is something that only happens to other people. Unless we get our shit in gear, our species could be looking at another technological and social slump.

So what comes next? Probably a period of barbarism followed by the formation of new civilizations that will reach a peak slightly higher than ours before collapsing back into ruin. *EDIT* I forgot to mention that this is the precedent set by history, for those of you who aren't discerning enough to catch that already. */EDIT*

Or perhaps we've reached a sort of "point of no return." Maybe we've advanced to the point that nothing short of a global natural disaster can shake us off our game and we have nowhere to go but up. Nice thought, huh?

Well with a global population of about 7 billion its gonna take a heck of a long time for humanity to die out not even accounting for humans evolving and advancements in medicine and technology which will keep us alive longer.

But as everyone knows, cockroaches will take over the earth one day. Ew.

Care to explain why anyone should replace us ? Afterall, it's very possible that we're freaks of nature, dead end of one of numerous branches of evolution.

only if they develop kevlar hides, they will. *ka-click*

no, the human race is'nt going anywhere anytime soon, our way of living just might, though.

we have the technology to make seawater drinkable, so a freshwater shortage will not be the undoing of the entire race.
food shortage is a threat, sure, but all people who live on farms will survive that.
energy shortage will simply throw us back into the dark age, and although we may not be fit to go out hunting with bow and arrow again, we still know our agriculture and the building of palasides to keep the animals out.

humanity will survive, it is civilisation you have to worry about.

on genetic engineering, creating perfect human beings all the time will create an incredibly limited genepool, so, for the sake of variaty, I propose that the parents have to determine their child's looks, in-born traits and brain capacity by several dice rolls the same way you'd make a DnD character.
yes, including Feats.

We're becoming genetically weaker as a species due to the lack of natural selection, and are thus increasingly dependent on technology just to survive.
Not true. Even assuming no natural selection at work (and I'd dispute that), we don't get "weaker". There's no such thing as "genetically weaker". Things evolve to better suit the environment they are in. In the absence of selection pressures, they will remain the same.

Secondly, people have been dependant on technology since more or less ever. It's tied closely to how we define people.

Because then you can enjoy waiting 7 years for the next two movies to come out.... Also, people are STILL going to be debating/speculating over what in blue blazes happened during that entire series.

God, I hope not. Maybe one of the more intelligent species could take our place like cats or wolves, or crows, or dolphins.

(yeah, there kinda are a lot of these. Trust me,I've checked)

evolution takes a long time maybe a new human eventually evolves from us (without stuff like facial hair and rudimentary organs.) either natural or biologically engineered.
on the other hand we don,t have natural predators the medical system may be ethical but it stunts natural selection (I,m not saying we should kill weaker people or leave them be).

I hear there's pretty good evidence that cephalopods have the capacity to develop human-level intelligence.

Slightly off-topic, but I miss the Neanderthals. I'd be curious to know what the world would be like today if we actually had to coexist with another intelligent species.
