only if you let it. when a game that i think looks good and then theres lots of hype about it i give the game low expectations which means that when i get the game i'm impressed with what i get.

Hype has no effect on the quality of a game, only on the perceived quality. People judge things based on their expectations, hype breeds greater expectations and so is much more likely to be disappointing. For example, I have thoroughly enjoyed every game in the Fable series, the key to this was not listening to anything Peter Molyneux ever said. Ever.

That said, if there is enough hype it can trump the actual quality of a game and people will love it no matter what, the rose-coloured glasses effect. Skyrim for example.

I just mark the release date on my calendar and then forget about it. I think people would be happier on the whole if they did that.

Weird that you didn't mention bugs, all I had were bugs, bugs, bugs when playing it. Anyway, I agree that SW:ToR is overhyped to hell and back - hardcore MMO players will come to resent it after a while and casual RPG players won't stick around after the story, or even enjoy the simple hotkey gameplay.

I think SW:ToR might very well be the most disjointed/ schizophrenic game in recent history, and also is very buggy, so whenever launch rounds up, I'm going to stay off the internet for a week to avoid all the flames.

It's also sad to see it offers nothing new, they're hyping story, but from where I'm sitting, The Secret World were first to announce story focus and are doing it better, with more development time and money already put into it.
I am hoping that they squash a lot of the bigger bugs before release, thats the only reason I didn't mention them.

If those that haven't tested it want a bit of honesty then I shall offer what i've seen so far.

As i've said it is a good game but it does have a really big downside.

Bugs.

"But all games have bugs" I don't hear anyone cry. Indeed they do but some of these really are game breaking. On a few planets the pathing and navmesh is shit. You get stuck on the floor even if there is no terrain around, it's like bits of navmesh are missing and your character gets lodged in the missing bits. The only way out is /stuck which at the moment offers you death and you have to take it back to the med center because if you ressurect where you /stuck you are still stuck.

Graphical errors. Parts of Coruscant where the interiors vanish leaving you floating in the middle of the city. Green screen, screen just fills up with coloured lights for no reason whatsoever.

Broken talents. A lot of them are shit, I won't lie. They are incredibly basic like "increase damage by 1% (and yes that is an actual talent)".

Lag. Everything is fine my side, my internet is pretty good and my PC is a beast but there is incredible lag in certain places, not everywhere though.

Like I said, i'm hoping most of them get ironed out before launch and we got the final build yesterday to test but I wasn't impressed. They don't seem to have fixed many of the bigger issues but they are down at the moment so we'll see what happens when they come back up.

MY major gripe is the lack of communication. "Servers are down but we expect them back up some time this week" was one line we had.

Now that is fine during beta, I don't care all that much after all testing isn't a right and they obviously don't know every issue they are going to have so ETA's are a bit off.

However...

Is that going to carry on into launch?

People have said "it's only beta it will be better for launch" but how do they know?

It is Biowares first MMO so we have no previous experience with how they will handle it. So far they are very lax in their communication and I have to admit it has me a bit worried.

The game is good but it has a long way to go still and this close to release means not everything that needs doing will be done.

If the hype = expectations for you, then YES!

When I was much, much younger and playing a lot of N64 and was subscribed to Nintendo Power... oh man, I would get hyped about so many games! Especially the Zelda games, though. Fortunately Zelda games have generally been exceptional so it's all good, but there's been plenty of times that I finally play the game and go "oh... what the hell is this crap??"

I basically avoid all I can about reading hype on upcoming games. I might read something here and there just to see what it's about and if I have interest but otherwise, yeah, I just keep my expectations low. Maybe that's why I'm liking Skyrim so much, because I really didn't enjoy Oblivion.

I have noticed this too, about many things.
If some friend praces and praces a game/book/movie and you buy it, you have so high expectations that it can't meet them.
If you see a game/book/movie in the store that you've heard something about and look at the cartbox and think "this might be worth a shot" and try it, you don't have expecatations so everything positive about it comes out as a plus.
It doesn't apply always but in many situations I have noticed this.

I'd say for a lot of games it does. People build up a game too much, and it's obviously doomed to ruin their experience. People have to mediate their expectations are they are doomed to be disappointed.

I've had this problem with most Bioware games. Games like Mass Effect 2 or Dragon Age were built up so much on these threads and in reviews that I thought they were the greatest games ever. And while they are still good games, I kept trying to find out what people liked so much about them. I just couldn't get into it, and I felt that there was something wrong with me or maybe the game for not producing the same reaction as others.

I've definitely learned from these experiences. People should definitely take care to mediate their expectations when they play games, even when it is a series they love. As much I as I love Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, I still have the idea in my mind that the game may still fall flat on its face or just not be impressive as everyone thinks it will be. I keep this in mind so I do not suffer the same fate as before.

I wouldn't say "ruined," but hype did hurt my impression of Shadow of the Colossus.

So many people, including Yahtzee, talked up the game as a grand piece of artistic achievement in video gaming, but, for me, the game was just "good, not great; unique, but not as amazing as everyone says it is."

As a result, I was very disappointed with the game. My expectations were sky-high because of the hype, and the experience just didn't live up.

Another question, can bad expectations for a game help it?

Reviews weren't terribly kind to games like Alpha Protocol for instance, but it ended up as a cult hit.
