Does it bother you at all that we are overpopulating the Earth?

I think most people aspire to have kids at some point in our life, but as innocent an aspiration it may be, its having a detrimental impact on the Earth and our living standards. Whether we like it or not, we are having more babies then dying, all the while trying to find ways to live longer, to have more kids...who is feeding all those children? I suppose our generation doesn't need to care that much because it isn't effecting us, but what about our grandchildren? We as the human race have destroyed quite a bit of what keeps us living, so I'm led to wonder at which point we will get so desperate to live that even the remainder of that is destroyed as well.

Anywho, how do you think we could go about resolving this issue and if your government initiated a single child policy tomorrow for example, would it bother you at all?

EDIT: Just to clear things up as I suspect people are getting slightly confused, I mean people vs resources, not "available space", its pretty obvious the Earth isn't quite crowded just yet....except if you live in Japan, to which I'd have to disagree.

EDIT 2: Oh, and I'm not going to get into the NWO's supposed plan to take over the world and cut the human race in half etc etc etc

At the moment the planet is more than capable of supporting everyone living on it, especially with advances in crop technology, the problem is that were just not distributing resources evenly.

If we want to look REALLY far ahead I'd personally prefer that every country who has the capacity to to accelerate their space programs, so that we can find a way of expanding beyond earth. As far off as it seems now the sooner we accept that it's what it's going to have to came to eventually (that or we do resort to a global one child policy to control population) then the sooner we will get there.

Reminds me of what i heard from a tree hugger. "At last killers ar doing some good" in regards to over populasation. I Can't really effect the population of earth, bu i try to be green, and tried to grow some fruit and veg, but it ended badly, soo yeah...

I think that eventually overpopulation will force us to move into space so no i dont think its a bad thing. breeding is one of the things we do, were humans. true im all for some people not having children but mainly its not really a concern of mine, eventually it will push us forward. Necessity is the mother of invention after all.

Overpopulation concerns are a long way off, especially in modern countries where the birth rate is slowly declining. There's still a lot of room left on Earth.

a very involved topic. To keep this short I'll answer the direct question. 1 child policy. Sure. Though not all pregnancies are preplanned. Abortion can have serious mental repercussions in parents.

No, but it does bother me that certain people procreate, population of the Earth be damned. Some people are just too stupid to be parents.

Overpopulation is actually more of a post-industrial issue. In pre-industrial countries, the problem is generally food shortage and lack of medical care.

As for the single-child policy? Wouldn't bother me. There's always adoption.

The Earth is perfectly capable to support a MUCH bigger population than now. That said, I personally think reproduction should be a privelege, not a right. You need a license to drive a car, but not to CREATE AND CARE FOR A SENTIENT BEING. That just doesn't sit right with me. Abortion shouldn't be legal; it should be compulsory. Unless you pass a test just as rigorious as the ones prospective adoptive parents have to pass.

It definitely worries me. Despite what some people think, the Earth can only handle so many people (according to population experts, that's only ~1-2 billion). With the population expected to reach 10-12 billion by 2050, we will start running out of food & water (especially with all the glaciers - out main water providers - melting). I have no idea what the consequences will be, or if we'll be able to move past it with space colonization & advancements in the food industry, but it does worry me.

However, that's not gonna stop me from having kids when I grow older though I'll aim for the 'replacing two' (for more reasons than just population worries).

breeding is one of the few natural instincts we still listen to, and even then we don't let it command us like it naturally would but rather we carefully control it so as far as unnatural goes I wouldn't say so.
Food wise we have an over abundance of food, more food than we eat, and allot of it is just thrown away, the problem with starvation isn't for a lack of world resources but due to the politics of the thing.
With our ability to build upwards and downwards we don't really have to worry about running out of space for people to exist any time soon (I mean sky scrapers and underground buildings) and HOPEFULLY by the time we do run out of space on this planet we will have figured out a way to move people into space.

Overall the whole overpopulation idea is pretty out there, I mean its something thats going to have to be dealt with inevitably but I would say it won't have a real impact on anything but politics for at least five generations.

It's an inevitable fact- We learned to outsmart nature- we can cure any desiese it throws at us, and we have become the most powerful thing on this planet, just because of intellegence.

There is no turning back to a lower population just by not having kids, because people are going to have kids, no matter how many laws you put against it.

There are several solutions, the best being a global man-spam war.

I do not think so. Also a lot of countries have a negative birth rate (or something like that), too, such as Japan, Canada (my own country). Canada only maintains its population through immigration, ffft.

But nature always finds a way, and we're overdue for a deadly disease, so just wait for that that will wipe out a good portion of the population /depressing.

Most developed nations actually have a very slow or even negative population growth. This is due to the fact that we don't need so many children to help around the farm or 'hedge our bets' for a genetic legacy as it were.

Even so, how would a 1 child policy be enforced? Do we forcibly castrate males and/or 'tube tie' females once they've had a child? What would be the penalty for avoiding such procedures? What happens if a child dies before it reaches 18? What happens in the case of twins? triplets? Etc?

How would we impose this on other 'underdeveloped' nations (given that they'll have even fewer resources and land to go around)?

Greatly. It infuriates me to no end.

Just about every one of our social, economic, environmental problems in this modern age would practically evaporate if you cut the globally population down to 1/3rd what it is now.

I would explain why, but Ill just as likely be misquoted and taken out of context anyway. So Ill just say, the population issue pisses me off.
