Does it make sense to have to play a section of a game that supposedly already happened?
As much sense as it makes to watch a section of a movie that already took place, and I say this as someone who watched Memento and Lucky Number Slevin this weekend.

It makes sense in a game if there's some sort of explanation, like in Assassin's Creed or PoP:SoT. But otherwise it's just some suspension of disbelief.
Lucky Number Slevin was a good movie.

OT: While I see your angle, as said before, its not like your character actually died in the narrative.

Does playing any part of a video game make sense? It's a gameplay thing, and, in my honest opinion, anything in a video game that attempts to tell a story should be nurtured. I'm not about to ***** that the cliches of movies and TV have come to gaming, it's an advancement.

yes, if you're the prince of persia.

Or...

"And that was the 7th time I died"
I was waiting for this answer.

So many people saying things like: the Assassins Creed approach, or the way Assassin's Creed did it made the most sence.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time did this on PS2 and Xbox. They probably weren't first but it's still better to hear, "Wait, that's not how it happened." or "No, no, no. Let me start again."

"Oh I'm just standing here vulnerable while having a flashback!"

*STAB DIE*

Yeah, I guess it could make sense like that.

Does respawning at predetermined checkpoints in the game as though nothing had happened make sense?

It depends on the story. In the game Cryostasis, the flashbacks are not your own, but of people who are already dead. Better yet, you can (and must) change this. Once something is fixed in the flashback, it's fixed in the present (they stay dead btw).

Yes, because the truth is you are a zombie, and you are flashing back to how you came to be that way.

Or a vampire.

Otherwise, no. I don't even accidentally remember dying in my memories. How can you remember dying wrong? That makes no sense. If the character you are playing is confused about whether or not they died in a memory, that's one serious case of dementia.

It always made me laugh thinking of the prince saying "And then he stabbed me and I fell to my death... wait that's not how it happened..."

Isn't that pretty much what happens when you die in Assassin's Creed? It takes a moment and goes "Oh wait, that's not what happened, that would be silly."

It would be nice a game when you actually die in a flashback, just to go "WTF" when you go out of it.

It does from a gaming perspective, because it counts as a failure and is therefore non-canonical. The true series of events is the one in which you do not die.
