Does it really make you "less of a gamer?"

Alrighty Escapists, I have an idea to present to you. My friend and I got into a huge debate today and to be honest, it didn't really go anywhere...but this is what it was about.

He had said that if you start a game and don't finish it (unless it was just a bad game, then it's justifiable), then you cannot call yourself a gamer. So, if you get to a boss and it's like a brick wall so you give up on the game, you are not a gamer. If you simply develop a waning interest, you are not a gamer. If you are distracted by another game and play it without finishing the one you already started, you are not a gamer. You get the idea.

He also said that if you do not strive for 100% completion and all trophies (if it's PS3) in a game, you are not a gamer.

By his standard, I might as well play Cooking Mama or something. I've "dropped" games before for one reason or another, though I have gone back and finished some of them later. As far as completion goes, I rarely do it. It's nice for people that have a bunch of time, I guess but I get no extra satisfaction out of a game knowing I have all the items, weapons, outfits, or what-have-you. The only time I really do that is if I finished a game much quicker than I had expected and am not ready to be "done" with it yet, meaning I really like it.

(But the games like Final Fantasy and stuff? Those take forever to get full completion! I don't have the patience for all that.)

Just curious. What do you all say?
If you do not finish all of the games you own/start, are you "less of a gamer?"
If you do not get 100% completion in a game, are you "less of a gamer?"

No way. you can quit a game whenever you feel like it, you're still a gamer. I mean come on does he even expect you to get all those flags in Assassin's Creed?

To be honest it sounds like a bad attempt to justify completionism.
Personally I play games because I want to have fun, I've dropped games before because they're not entertaining or I get bored of them.

I got all the flags on Assassin's Creed ^^.

Anyways, I think your friend is wrong in his idea of a gamer. Considering gaming is a passtime, I don't see why a "gamer" MUST strive for 100% completion on every game he/she plays.

Last time I checked, "gamer" was used to name people who played games...

I think your friend is full of shit. I've been gaming most of my life and there are many games I've started and not finished and I've never gotten 100% completion on a game.
100% completion is for raging psychotics, people with OCD, and/or people with WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much time on their hands.
A gamer is someone who plays games, whether that be competitively or as just for fun.

A gamer is someone who plays games not someone who beats games, tell your friend to go to a Linux convention, his retarded elitism will be welcome there.

I used to BEAT everygame I played, but that was when I was young and my mom would only buy my brother and I a new game if we beat out the old one.

Some games are just dumb to beat, like Wheelman, or Far Cry2.

No. You do not need to finish every game to be a gamer, much less complete them 100%. Example: It's alright if you stop playing I Wanna Be the Guy after the first screen. No one's judging.

Also, your friend sounds like a jerk. It sounds like he needs to take the stick out of his bum.

Other way round. Gamer includes game which are meant to be played for fun. If you're "gaming" solely to get points/achivements it sounds more like a job.

A gamer is purley someone who plays games its not a freaking ranking system and I wish people would stop using it as such its frigging annoying, funny how it only really cropped up around the MMO/online console generation I sure as hell doubt there were any hardcore gamers playing MUDs or Monkey Island >_>

And hell no your friend must be nuts if he goes for 100% thats fine if you have a small collection maybe but counting all my pc/console games together im at around 104 games total I doubt I've ever finished even half nevermind 100%.

Your friend is an idiot.

Tell him to stop talking to you, get a bag of coke, and get back to farming achievements to show off his l337 SK33l2.

Out of the several hundred (if not in the thousands at this point) games I've played, I've likely only completed perhaps 100 or so. Quitting a game that doesn't hold your interest doesn't make you less of a gamer, but continuing a game you don't enjoy does make me think less of your intelligence.
