Just tell him to beat Animal Crossing, let`s see how he thinks after that.

I used to be a 100% completion kind of guy; but that was in the days where I was playing games like Mario 64 and the original Jak & Daxter. In those games it is both reasonable and a fun challenge to try to get 100%.

Then I started playing Devil May Cry on Dante Must Die mode, and in that case I was doing it less for fun and more to see how many times I could retry that damned Super Nelo Angelo boss battle without biting the cord off the controller.

Then I started playing FFX, and learned that you have to win the ultimate blitzball championship to get Wakka's ultimate weapon. Ha Ha Ha-FUCK THAT SHIT! (I did finish the lightning-dodge challenge though; which only took about 1% of the time it would have taken me to do the blitzball thing).

Nowadays, with RPGs or other action games, I usually just read a guide on GameFAQs so I can get mostly complete on my first playthrough, or I just use PAR codes if I want to see some of the extra content and don't feel like watching chocobos fuck for three weeks on end (FF7 - yeah, I got the PC version and used a trainer to get KOTR).

Who gives a crap?

Games were invented to be fun, not to be a chore.

so who cares if you aren't a "true gamer".

Heres the dealy-O. If you play games, then you are a gamer.

If you enjoy video games, then you are a gamer.
If you breeze through them on hard then you are a skilled gamer, and if you are striving for 100 % completion then you are a fanatical gamer - those things just put qualifiers on the core concept of gamer. So not finishing a game doesn't make anyone "less of a gamer" if only they enjoy video games - and playing them to completion doesn't make anyone who doesn't enjoy them any of a gamer.

He had said that if you start a game and don't finish it (unless it was just a bad game, then it's justifiable), then you cannot call yourself a gamer. So, if you get to a boss and it's like a brick wall so you give up on the game, you are not a gamer. If you simply develop a waning interest, you are not a gamer. If you are distracted by another game and play it without finishing the one you already started, you are not a gamer. You get the idea.

He also said that if you do not strive for 100% completion and all trophies (if it's PS3) in a game, you are not a gamer.
You have found yourself an excellent lolcow. Tell him you've come around and think he's absolutely right. Then give him a rock-hard game as a present. Some bullet hell should do nicely.

Sounds like a cocky bastard.
Merely having an interest and playing games makes you a gamer. Sounds like he's just being egotistically defiant. Don't listen to him.

I think we've established by now that your friend is either:

A: an idiot
B: not being serious/being argumentative for the sake of it
C: being misrepresented/misquoted by you

In case C you know what your doing and I hope you got the attention you crave. In case B don't worry about it, people argue for the hell of it all the time. In case A go to your local bargain bin, buy him a crap-load of the worst games imaginable and then accuse him of not being a gamer because he didnt complete/wont start playing any of them.

I really can't be bothered with those challenges that require you to play the game a SECOND time through.

Says him and what army? Opinions are like... oh crikey I'm starting to rack up clichés pretty pretty quickly, aren't I?

Well you get the point anyway: Trying to measure what constitutes a "gamer" is highly subjective, i.e. a matter of opinion. His statments are thus personal opinions and not objective unrefutable truth. And while he has all the right in the world to have, hold and express his (or others') opinions, you have the exact same right and as such you can tell him that your own opinion is that his dito are a load of fetid dingo's kidneys.

Like I tell my 10 yo when girl when she is getting you a "Uh huh!", "Nuh huh!" shouting match with her 5 years younger sister: what are you trying to achieve? Is it that important to force someone 5 years younger than you to think your opinion is "better"?

Just drop the matter and let him stir in his own pus.

I'm pretty sure playing a game and getting every achievement makes you an achievement whore.

9 time out of 10, getting fuckloads of achievements just means you have more free time than anybody else.

I think your friend needs a slap across the face to bring him to reality if he's 100%ing every game he owns. And a new hobby, since he evidently likes completing long and grind worthy tasks in some cases, put him on the renewable energy crisis, therefore once you get him started he won't be able to help himself, not being able to be a "true energy user" and there being an unsolved problem about the place... We could even persuade Sony to give him a special trophy if that's any motivation...

Well...I got one solution...Make him play Battletoads on the NES. Ask him if he feels "less of a gamer" after he failed the 3rd level like 675th time...

We call them games because we play them for fun, and that means how we consider it fun. They'd be called "works" if we had to finish everything and had to do it a set way.
Life's too short for 100% completion :)
