Google Shakespeare or Edgar Allan Poe & tell me what you see.

A boat load of pirated stuff. :D it's how I was able to read Macbeth in my senior year without bringing home a 25-lb. book. :) as well as use ppl's notes...

so yep. :/
That's not piracy. These guys are dead for such a long time that their property has become community property.

but books are rarely read on screens.
Says you, I read almost exclusively on screen, even when I happen to have a physical copy of a book I usually prefer to read it on a screen, typically my iPhone these days but before that I had other smart phones and pda's.

It's kind of funny when you imagine the guy who pirates. What is he, a scribe? Does he just sit there and copy a book per day?

Then the people who scan an entire novel and put it in Adobe.

Yes it does..but there is a good side to it. For e.g.: Many books that I want to read, you can`t find in Romania (where I live) and it would cost me a fortune to bring to my dorstep by post. I downloaded many pdf books like METRO 2033.

I think books are ok to pirate to some extent, because their main use it to educate people and thus, knowledge is power. Power to the smart people!

I guess they are just not making such a fuss about it 1) because you dont invest 200million in a book in production 2) a pirated book is about 3mb big so they cant stop the spread. 3) it has been done since the invention of pen and paper. I doubt my teachers and profs have ever asked the author everytime they copied stuff out of books , or sometimes whole books. There are photocopymachines in about every library inviting you to copy as much as you want.
The internet on the other hand, even if it spreads billions of ebooks for free, (which are nearly never read, but its good to know that you have them) increased book sales by a fair amount, i am looking at you amazon.
When i hear of a good book, or am reminded of its existence, chances are way better that i just log on amazon and order it , than going to the city to buy it (if its available atm) or to remember to do so a few days later.
I bought 8 books this month online, all because of spontaneously found recommendations or reviews or well done adverts. If i go to browse in my favourite bookstores, they might order me everything in 24hours, but that doesnt make me aware of a books existence, so without the internet, id have much more money left every month;)

Stephenie Meyer (of course that would be the article I pulled up...) had to cancel a book release because of a pirated copy. ain't just dead authors.

there's a warning in the front of books that basically says (and I'm just paraphrasing): "If you buy the book with no cover, then it's stolen property." And piracy is stealing.

I searched the piratebay.org & they had pirated e-books & audio books.

Well yeah, it is pirated, and you want to know what the funny thing is? It is easier to get e-books illegally than it is to actually buy them at an online store.

Oh, I was not referring to piracy with books in general, but to shakespeare. Who is dead for such a long time that his copyright has expired. (Leaving aside the issue that his identity and heirs are indeterminable) Of course people who are merely dead for a day and have living heirs should be able to hold their property.

Well a 400 page book is about 50MB in PDF format.

So in a lot of cases it's "spend 40 quid on a reference book and wait a week for it to arrive" or "Pirate the pdf for free and have it with you in the 30 seconds it takes to download".

They're really lucky that a lot of people prefer the feel of a paper book, and e-readers haven't perfected electronic ink yet. Gives them some edge over music and video people.

from what I found it can be openly published by any publisher after 70 yrs. (don't know why "How To Train Your Dragon" was in the results) and that's where the money from a book goes. If you aren't a publisher & you don't have permission (like those stolen Japanese apps) & you put it on the web, then it's pirated... eh I need to look into this. -brb-
