I'm not talking about graphics as they don't matter too much to me, but is Morrowind so highly praised in a Deus Ex kinda way where it's mostly nostalgia holding it up, or a Painkiller kinda way where it actually is fun compared to modern games?

EDIT: OH GOD I'm not saying Deus Ex isn't fun!

Deus, not Dues

OT: Morrowind was hella fun. Haven't played it in a while cause my spare time is spent in New Vegas, but I loved it. Except for the fucking cliffracers, but I doubt anyone liked those things.

I never really played it but from what I saw, the setting far exceeds that of both Oblivion and Skyrim.
What did you hear of gameplay?

It depends, its an old school RPG where the amount of freedom you're given at the start is ironically nearly crippling. If you want the conviencance of knowing where your quest objectives are and being able to find towns and fast travel then I would say it falls short. As I said its old school where you have to work hard to succeed

However I feel the setting and story are the best of the series so far (note: I have not finished Skyrim yet so I may still be proven wrong).

There are a huge number of mods for the game and the best one is probably the graphical upgrade which makes it look on par with Oblivion. I wouldnt be surprised if there was a mod released in the next six months to a year or so that made it look as good as Skyrim either.

I played Oblivion at a friend's house a while ago and when I got out of the sewer I was just like "omg what do I do"

No. Speaking as someone who only ever tried to get into it for the first time recently as something to do pre-skyrim, it simply isn't worth the time. The world is great, the graphics are fine, but the gameplay is just thoroughly not fun. And that's with it modded to hell, base game even less so...

Personally, I played it earlier this year, I didn't feel it guys. I know for it's time it must have been an amazingly new kind of RPG with a new take on open world structure, but what I played just seemed like Oblivion: the not as good edition (which honestly seemed like a weaker version of Fallout 3 to me at the time). Sorry if I'm killin' everyone's nostalgia :p

The combat system is just not fun to use?

I've tried playing it more recently; I've had the game forever but never really played it much. I can see how it would have been amazing back in the day but for me.. I have much more fun in Oblivion. The combat and the UI really bother me, though I'll admit I have lots of fun dungeon dwelling in Morrowind. Also Morrowind gave me a new insight on Kahjiit. I might consider playing that race more often now in Elder Scrolls games.

It's worse with Morrowind. In Oblivion, you saw the Emperor get assassinated, and right before he told you to go do something. In Morrowind, you get off a prison boat and go through customs, then get a paper telling you to talk to some dude in a town.

I didnt really play oblivion besides loading up a friends save to run around for 10 minutes (never started my own game) so I cant be sure if you would get a more or less severe case of "what next?" but I would say its probably safe to say it would be worse. You still have a journal to consult but its not done in nearly as nice of a way

in fact, I can't remember a less accessible mainstream game.
I get what you're saying, that was my problem with Red Dead Redemption. The game kinda handed everything to you. You could fast travel anywhere at any time, you had a huge stock of bullet-time and the gun auto aimed. I just didn't feel like I was achieving anything, more telling John to achieve everything.

Yeah. It's really a bit of a modern epidemic - the streamlining of games - but that's for another thread, another time. I preferred Morrowind because it just felt like it had about 10 times the content of Oblivion and Skyrim. I mean, you could build a town, have a house built for you, among many other things. Fantastic!
Well I just bought the GOTY edition on Steam so I guess I can judge for myself!
EDIT: BTW, when you said fantastic I hope that was a reference to my avatar! (if you didn't get that, fantastic was his catchphrase)

I don't know what everyone else is playing , but I found morrowind fucking awful, to the point where it was unplayable to me after about 30 minutes. And believe me, I tried.

The last straw came when my sword and shield fighter lost to the pack of rats from the first thieves guild mision. A nord fighter. axe and shield. losing to rats.

I mean this in the nicest way possible

fuck that game

EDIT: FIGHTERS GUILD. THE FIRST FIGHTERS GUILD MISSION

that was one hell of a typo
