I like COD4 because when you get pwned 6 times in a row you can see exactly how they killed you. When you walk into another perfect grenade you can see exactly what position they got into, what angle they aimed their grenade and how long they cooked it for. Using this new found knowledge you can emulate it and score similar sick kills.

As for general ability I agree with the people who say it's all about knowing the maps. You get to know the the best hiding spots, you know the fastest routes to the action, you know where people will be camping, etc. Obviously there is more to being the best than just map knowledge but I think this is the best place to start.

i agree 100% once you know the maps you have a feel of the level and you find all the hiding places making it all the easier to get a few kills

Since when do games need practice? Since always... This is true for any game, physical, mental, anything. You want to get better at soccer? You better get practicing. You want to get better at Q-Bert? You better get practicing. We're talking about practice here, not training. Only guys who try to really max out their potential in a game do training sessions.

Being a fighting gamer I must say I have trained. Open up the practice mode/dojo and smack that dummy with the same combo twenty times in a row...

I think it depends really.

For instance, when metal gear online came out, I got into it as early as possible so I could attempt to be on equal footing with the other players. Turns out it works:p

But for the most part, I can't get anywhere, because by the time I start playing a game online, most americans have been playing for a good few months beforehand. So its very hard to actually improve
