Does Red Dead Redemtion get better as it goes?

So I'm about 5 hours in to Red Dead Redemption, and so far, I'm sorry to say I'm not enjoying it much at all. I don't deny that it's really beautifully produced, but I find the controls a little twitchy and annoying, and haven't gotten into any kind of real storyline at all yet. (The only storyline quests I've done involve ranch duties, and I just met/saved a traveling snake oil salesman.)

I feel like I'm constantly distractingly bombarded with mini-games and collection quests, like the game has a serious case of ADD. Or that it's really just a glorified WarioWare.

So here's my question. Is this still the learning curve that I need to stick through to get to the real meat of the game? Or are the little distractions the point of the fun for most people, and if I don't like it by now I never will?

The storyline gets much better as it goes, and you won't have to do all ranching and herding type missions after the first bit. You'll do much more gunslinging.

As for the controls, all I can say about that is that I got more used to them. They never really got better.

If you don't enjoy the side missions just ignore them, there are no real gameplay benefits from doing them except a bit more money. The honour system is quite useless, so just follow the story for a while and it does pick up after those annoying missions with the Snake Oil guy.

Thanks very much for the feedback! I'll keep playing, and stick more to main story quests instead of feeling like I need to do every mini-quest that pops up in front of me.
