Does split screen not matter anymore?

I don't know about you but back in the day video games were all about the split screen. Now I know that online gaming has taken a big part on the multiplayer experience, but I still love split screen games. Playing online with your friends just doesn't have the same affect as sitting down with your buds in the same room fighting for who has the bigger screen, hitting them when you constantly get nubed, or even high fiveing each other after you just did something totally awesome! These are the moments that online gaming will never have. A good example of this neglect would be the PS3. I go out of my way to buy an extra controller for my system and all I ask is that they put out enough games to make having one worth it. So far LBP, Tekken 6, and MW2 have been the only big games that have even come of use for my second controller. I mean just look at Killzone 2. Big time FPS fun campaign, even has battles you can do with bots. Do they add split screen? No the hell they don't! Is it to much to ask?

Hrm... Sounds like a PS3 problem... I'm a 360 player, and we've got TONS of splitscree games... Halo, CoD... Halo... Ok, so maybe not TONS, but we've got some. Team Fortress 2 should have been a splitscreen. GTAIV could have had one too.

Hell, if they put one in Army of TWO... Just sayin'.

But yeah, I miss 'em, miss the comradarie, the personal connections... But let's face it, we live in a techno driven world, where people are more content to chat via TXT and facebook than to actually CALL up someone on that SAME cellphone they're using for texting... So why would we want the personal connection of SITTING right next to the person you just scored your 17th consecutive Golden Gun kill in the Temple on? I mean, do you REALLY want to sit next to the guy that just dropped out of the Vents and slapped you down before you could even GET the Auto Shotgun in the Facility?

lawl I do miss Goldeneye 64...

The rema-BOOT will not be the same.

It will fail.

HARD.

I wouldn't mind more splitscreen co-op as there is nothing wrong with you co-op buddy/ies sitting next to you. But whatever, the less social contact the better right?

lol

Never liked splitscreen. It halves the area I have to look at and makes it way too easy to see what the other is doing. If I want to play in the same room as my friends I bring my laptop and we game via LAN.
Either that or back in the Amiga500 days we took turns playing (I think I had one or two splitscreen games, notably Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge and Super Cars II, and that was it).

I love split screen! I remember playing TONS of matches of Perfect Dark*... Pretty much defined multiplayer for me as I grew up. Now, I recognize the fun that can be had from online play (it's a lot), but there's simply no reason to get rid of split screen completely. I mean, there's no problem with having both.

*Perfect Dark was superior to Goldeneye in every way. Just saying.

I totally agree with you there. Better weapons, customizable characters, overlapping levels... man, it was the bomb.

OT: I'm sad when I cannot have splitscreen on some games. I grew up on splitscreen because for the longest time I could not enjoy the wonders of online play. Sure it's cool and all, but I want to have someone near me to share it with. It's fun sharing those fun moments were something epic happens. One thing I wish they would do (Halo 3 got this right) is have it so that there is a mode where if it's multiplayer, allow other people to join in as well. Perhaps as guests or something. But it's awesome having 4 people playing splitscreen Halo online. =D

Mario Kart on the SNES was the best splitscreen game ever, because it didn't actually need the full screen to be playable. Too many splitscreen games tried to cram in too much detail into half the space and it was never successful.

I also never liked splitscreen in FPS games, because it meant you couldn't sneak up on your friend and pop a cap in his head. Does anyone remember the days of taking your console, connector cable and another TV round for proper deathmatches, or am I showing my age again?

Obviously for sports games there's no need - and that's where the second controller beats online gaming every time. Nothing better than thumping your best mate 4-0 in a North Korea v Brazil game on Pro Evo and then mocking him for hours :D

All we can do is wait for the coming of the great Timesplitters sequel. The game series renowned above all for its LOCAL multiplayer.

Splitscreen is pretty much one of the primary reasons i game. You cant beat a night in with mates, take out and a good laugh.

and it seems like something that game companies should notice. every time a new game comes out, i see multiple topics on multiple forums asking if it has split screen, which is usually followed by sadness and disappointment when the answer is inevitably "no".

what, do the game companies thing that all of the people clamoring for splitscreen are just silly ninnies that don't know what they are talking about?

aren't we the ones they are supposedly making the games FOR?

also, to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't care if the graphics had to be degraded. They would only have to do it for split screen mode anyway.

I wish it was around more, especially in shooters. I don't really play online as it is so more splitscreen would be welcome.

Split-screen needs to stay a staple of multiplayer gaming, in my mind. Multiplayer games are alright over a broadband connection with random strangers, but nothing beats a night of splitscreen deathmatch with a few mates and more than a few beers - it's far more sociable and far more enjoyable. If splitscreen were to die then a large part of the fun of gaming would die too.

4-player split-screen is one of the reasons Halo does so well against the competition. I don't know why other games don't adopt it. It's not like the Call of Duty or Killzone UI takes up that much of the screen.
