Does the fact that I like (watching) sports make me less of a nerd?

Think a video on the escapist actually touched on this.

Fans of watching sporting events on TV have the potential to be 50x worse then all other nerds.. Yet it's more accepted socially.

But who cares if you enjoy it really?

You're thinking too much into the labels. Honestly, I think most 'nerds' enjoy sports to some extent. I follow college and professional American football very closely, and I'm also an 'ubernerd' according to the Escapist. I own Madden '11 (although that could have something to do with me being a lifelong New Orleans Saints fan), I play it and I genuinely enjoy it.

This is real life mate. This isn't high school where all 'nerds' can do are play chess and video games, while only the big muscley jocks play sports and get all the girls. You're allowed to have many different interests here =)
I don't think it can be put any better than this.

This whole thing reminds me of an ESPN commercial.

Yes, I sometimes get into baseball statistics like that.

Can't figure out how to embed the video.

]I am a self-proclaimed nerd, and an 'ubernerd' according to this website, and I am even going to be attending a traditionally nerdy school. (I.E. WoW LAN parties on the weekends.)

While I am physically inept to play sports, I genuinely enjoy watching sports (Association Football and North American Football, specifically), and I can get very 'involved' in a game, but what I want to know is, does that alienate me from other nerds, or in any way damage my credibility (as a nerd)?
I just makes you simple minded.

It surprises people when they find out I watch sports.
I don't get why, I am competent in the vast majority of them and am pretty good at cricket.

I personally really enjoy watching lots of sports (like football (soccer if you're american), tennis, golf, basketball e.t.c.) but i don't think it takes away from my geekiness since i'm still referred to as "a reclusive gamer" by friends.

Do think about it as "you're liking something that your stereotype shouldn't like"

Like what you like :)

It shouldn't damage your credibility as a nerd (as long as you can still, ahem...'pwn' people at gaming), but it does make you less of one. Embrace it! Sport is fantastic fun. I'm the kind of guy who plays football 3 nights a week and go to Lan parties with my mates. It's all good!

Unfortunately nerds get a bum rap for this ¬.¬. I play Oblivion and because it's role playing or "imaginary" it's basically means anybody playing a role playing game gets a big fat label on them which reads "nerd"

does watching and playing sports make you less nerdy in the eyes of society?
YES

I'm shit at sports, I have a depth perception issue ¬.¬
but at least I can say "I have more skill in my fingers than you in your whole entire body, I play guitar!!!!"
