Taken from the TF2 Wiki:
"Although he lived through the Second World War, and his bio hints at a dark past, Valve has stated that the Medic is not a former Nazi."

Can't find the citation for the Valve reference, but iirc, he is in his mid-30s/early-40s and TF2 is set in the 60s, so he'd be barely old enough for a call-up to fight in World War 2.

Apparently Valve has stated that he isn't a Nazi, but in all honesty I think we can catagorise this statement under "censorship, lol" and look at the actual game and story surrounding it for the truth.

I feel it's reasonable to assume the medic did fight(/heal) for the German army in WW2: he gets to cut people open and see how they work without all the hassle of defecting and turning traitor. It's even possible that he could have taken part in some of the Nazi Experiments, though he always would have been doing them for SCIENCE! and not as a method of torture. After seeing how he operated on his team in his Meet the Medic video, then as long as there was some tangible knowledge or enhancement to be gained from a procedure I doubt there are many things he would consider to be too unethical for him to do.

Kinda Off-topic, but what is TF2? I've seen a few threads about it but don't know what it is
Team Fortress 2. It's a multi-player team based shooter game by Valve that just went free-to-play on Steam.

Im pretty sure they were just going for the crazy German doctor stereotype. You are looking way to much in to it.
That is based off crazy nazi doctors you know.
But, there is definetly a crazy nazi doctor vibe in this.
But they won't admit that... would they?

If you look at the description text for Meet the Medic on YouTube, it says this:

"Not every mad doctor lives in a castle surrounded by villagers with pitchforks. Sometimes they live in the trenches, where there's plenty of spare parts flying around and a pressing need to get inventive with them."

World War II was basically defined by trench warfare, so I think there's your answer. Considering his gray hair, I think the Medic is more somewhere in his mid or late 40s or even early 50s, meaning he could have conceivably been a very young doctor during WWII. So I think he did work during WWII, and he most likely fought for the Germans.

However, simply being in the army doesn't make you a Nazi in your heart. As an aspiring doctor, he probably had very little choice as to what he did and who he did it on. He may have been in the Nazi armies helping Nazis kill people, but that doesn't mean he held all of those beliefs in his heart. And regardless, nothing in his character hints at any of that mattering to him anymore. His chief concern is medical science. I think Valve not addressing it proves that point in a way--he's not worried about making a master race or anything. That is of no consequence to him. He just wants to inject things into body parts and see what happens.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is being in the Nazi army doesn't necessarily make him a Nazi. It just means the choices he had as to where he could practice his particular brand of medical science were limited.

The TF2 team stated they didn't want the slightly controversial but mostly dark theme in the light heartened environment of TF2, so they never directly said he was a Nazi.

He's an obvious allegory to Dr. Frankenstein, although he seems to have a bit of Dr. Mengele mixed in, with the almost angelic appearance and such in Meet the Medic.

No I think he may have been trained by a Nazi Doctor who used such techniques but giving that he is friends with the various nationalities I doubt he himself is one.

You're thinking of World War I because the invention of the tank at the end of WWI ended trench warfare, although the medic's style is obviously WWII and to say a german with a 1940's style wouldn't make people think nazi is a joke. There's also the whole unspeakable atrocities joke such as the severed head of the spy that makes you think return to castle wolfenstein. He is definitely a nazi but only in a flippant light-hearted TF2 way.

No. He's just based on a stereotype, like all the team members (well, except for the Pyro, I guess).

Valve said he wasn't a Nazi so it may be more like this...

I do not think Medic WAS a Nazi, though he may very well have worked for them.
I just have a feeling that he is a German Jew though. But obviously i have no evidence.
