Does this bother anyone else? It'd be great to know I'm not the only one.

It's a bit of a stupid character in my opinion, so listening to these people tell you all about what it is and what motivates it and how cool it's going to be and how it's going to fit into the group of established characters is analogous to someone telling you about their fanfic or RPG character. It may be cool to them, but nobody else cares before they're given a chance to form their own connection.

So uh...

What happens if they "break"?
then the game becomes total wank

"(birth control) IS NO USE!"
"This [abortion] will end it!"

(Wow... That's a[nother] way to kill a character...)

Sonic characters talk... yea, that's annoying. Really, keep story out of sonic games and I will probably like them. Best Sonic games are those where you don't have to listen to them droning on...

I really don't get what you are talking about in regards to being a fan of something that doesn't exist.

The lady at the beginning is the voice actor for the character. That's why she uses such an annoying voice; it's the character's voice.

It seems like a fairly run of the mill introducing a new character video to me. They certainly don't seem to assume that I am a fan of Sonic or of this new Character Sticks.

Sticks is a great addition? I totally didn't know that.

Yeah, it is awkward. They should be proving it to us, making us want more, but I only get this weird fan forced vibe that makes me feel uncomfortable with the changes.

And they couldn't think of better name than Sticks? Yeesh. It already feels like a reject.

Doesn't sound like the trailer 'assumes' you didn't realize you wanted this character. It sounds like they want to make sonic popular again like it's old days, and are desperately trying to find a way to do so. In this case, a new character that they're trying to hype up to the consumers by means of trailer. And they fail at it.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Every thing about that was wrong, just every single fucking thing and I couldn't agree more with you. Now I'm just going to try and forget that I ever watched that because honestly, I feel a little sick right now.

Can't say I see what all the fuss is...this just seems like marketing promotion for a new Sonic show and they're showing off a new character.

So let me see if I'm following the hypothetical from the OP correctly.

For starters, the OP wants us to be placed into the same situation as they are, so it's safe to assume that the OP is a fan of Sonic and has been looking forward to a new Sonic show. Then they release a trailer for the show and.......now the trailer is assuming that you're a fan of the show that's not even out yet? Sorry, I think I got lost somewhere.

Tell me again: how is having a trailer for a new show which promotes one of the new show's new characters (being added to an already established cast) is "assuming you're already a fan"? Seems like they're just...you know...introducing the new character if you ask me...

Personally I think you're assuming that they're assuming you're already a fan. =P

Granted, the decision for that character's voice does cause my ears to bleed...but as far as the trailer itself I don't see anything wrong with it, nor do I see how simply introducing a character equates to assuming you're already a fan of that character or the show they'll be in.

Looks like a game designed for children, not 30 year old men. Hard to be critical. You're not the target audience - of course you don't like the product.

All there is to say, really.

The thing that annoys me is people who say they're fans of things that don't exist yet.
I knew someone who MONTHS prior to the release of Watch_Dogs said he was a fan of Watch_Dogs. and it makes me sick.

It's that kind of "get in on the ground floor" mentality that lets marketing dictate how successful something is
instead of any actual measure of quality (You know, because the thing doesn't even exist yet)

Anyone who picks a fandom based on marketing is is contributing to the downfall of that culture.

So that's not exactly the thing you're talking about but it's close.

Funny someone should mention this as I was going to say, "Now the OP, and everyone else here, knows how I feel about Tiny Tina."

That is one of the most horrifically cringeworthy things ever! That voice! It made my teeth hurt!
Yes, it wierdly is assuming people like this new character, before it even comes out. Like it thinks there's a fandom for it before it is out.
What a horrifically atrocious character! It sounds like Elmer Fudd on helium! Except Elmer Fudd worked, because it suited him.

They do it a lot with garbage, but that is the worst!

I have seen the same thing with Bioshock Infinate. It's sheer arrogance and absolute despair, as they try to brainwash people into liking garbage, by saying it's good, it's good, you like it, you like it, repeatedly.
It's always total and utter garbage, and it's always desperate money grabbing crap they're trying to push and get pre orders on.
i dont know if theres ia a fandom, but i bet you anything theres already porn of that character

also i liked bioshock infinite, more so than the original bioshock in fact, and i didnt watch almost any trailer, tough elizabutt definitively didnt catch me, thats one rejected Disney princess if ive ever seen one, it gets ridiculous at certain points

Of the trailer.

Don't be so critical if you didn't read the post. The TRAILER.

EXCLUSIVELY the trailer.

Wow. This character in both its conception and voice "actor" are so terrible that even the people who developed it are starting to have second thoughts.

How do I know? THEY SPENT AN ENTIRE TRAILER TRYING TO CONVINCE US THAT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA. I can only imagine what the creators were thinking:

Creator 1: Aw damn! This doesn't look good. It's effin' terrible.
Creator 2: It's like somebody Silvered all over this character. And that voice actor? Do we really need her around?
Creator 1: We already payed her upfront, what else could we do?
Creator 2: I know! Let's create a trailer introducing that character to get people jazzed up about them, rather than provide any meaningful info, like story, gameplay, or game designs. And let's also get that voice actor involved.
Creator 1: Do we really need her? I feel like they would p*** off everyone else even more.
Creator 2: Hey, the more they hear her, the more likely they'll be able to stand her voice without having their ears bleed.
Creator 1: I see your point. Roll with it!

Whenever Sticks isn't on screen...all the characters should be asking, "Where's Sticks"?

I am tired and have a headache and that voice still didn't annoy me...

Weird.

You know I would like to see one of these promo things where they just absolutely shit-talked a character for like 10 minutes.

If Sonic games these days are being designed and marketed for children, which seems to be the case when they give us crap like this, I only have one question: What dumbass thought that was a good idea? Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the strongest nostalgia properties of the nineties. It should be a no-brainer that all they have to do is make Sonic 3 but with one new hook and every gamer in my age group (20-35) will get a great big boner right from the announcement trailer.

This sickly-sweet "friendship is the greatest force in the world" junk does not belong in Sonic; I can't figure out how such a simple concept as "run fast, break robots, look cool" got twisted into this Final-Fantasy-for-eight-year-olds tripe. I haven't played any game in the series past Sonic and Knuckles, and it's just so sad that they could be making money off of me if they would just remember what Sonic used to be.

On the plus side:

I just want you to know, this made me laugh aloud. That's how you tap into nostalgia. I enjoyed it very much, thank you.
