It's not that I don't CARE, exactly, I just don't want to hear about it all the time but nobody seems to want to shut up about it. It just makes me feel really guilty because whenever I tell someone "can you shut up about Japan, for god sake!" they treat me like I'm Hitler all of a sudden and I feel kind of bad about my thinking about this.

While it's probably not the most politically correct way of responding, I can see where you're coming from. Because of the way that social media has pervaded our lives, it has now become "trendy" to constantly talk about whatever disaster/relief effort/latest destruction has occurred.

This "danger trending" occurred during the Iran Elections, the Haiti Relief Efforts, the BP Oil Spill, The Chilean Miners and now is trending around the Japan Earthquake.

It's probably best, if it annoys you, to just keep calm, keep quiet, express sympathies if asked, and change the subject. Otherwise you're going to get an earful.

@OP

TBH, there was a time when I would have called you a f***er.. but now I believe its your own personal right to not care, all of us at some point don't care about someones pain, suffering etc... hell some of us revel in another's fall when it suits us.. but thats off point..

Now obviously if you're asking people to shut up about it, yes its a bit rude but true I also do get annoyed when everyone talks about the current suffering of some peeps that live far away in a zone thats known to have these kind of natural disasters..

Conclusion: You're pushing controversy with the majority of people but I don't think it makes you horrible..

Sounds like you are just being honest, which is more than most people can say. From my experience, people only seem to care about something so that they can look good. I am not saying everyone is like this, just a lot of them.

I started an account just to answer this question...

I live in Japan. I live in Mie prefecture in a tiny town called Komono though the JET program.

I am so...sick...of the sensationalism that CNN, Fox and EVERY OTHER FREAKING NEWS STATION IS HAMMING TO YOU PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the flat out LIES about current circumstances!

I couldn't get my family and friends to shut up about making me come home. I live 300 miles away from that mess.

Is it bad? Yeah. I donated about $103 bucks to a local fundraiser to help out the Tohoku region, but people are taking it WAY to freaking FAR! Every day it's "I'm fine...I'm fine...we had a mag 3 aftershock last night...No I'm not irradiated. No I'm not going to die."

"BUT IT'S NOT WORTH YOUR LIFE!" Yeah... which is why my life isn't in danger. I'm not gonna punk out of my job because there's a huge disaster to the north of me. That's like living in Florida, and packing up your life, job, family, everything, just because there was one bad hurricane.

That's another thing. I just heard from my family that Iodine pills are sold out in the states... WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?! You really think with the way the wind currents work Cali is gonna suffer some huge fallout?

JUST!!!! UGRHGLHJPOHJJWKEHFJODSHJFKEJGKHPIJSDHNFJKSN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do your part. If you wanna help, donate. It's what the Tohoku region really needs. If you wanna fly over here in a month and help clean up, that's awesome. I'm taking nenkyu from work to do the same, or I hope I can. But for the love of FREAKING GOD! Stop FREAKING OUT!!! The people here have kept a cool head though and though. They queue up for food. They shelter people who have none. Everything has been done orderly. If these people aren't freaking the heck out about this WHY SHOULD YOU?! Give, Pray, Help. Don't spasm cause CNN told you the Japanese are "On the brink of despair." and "Are revolting against the government." Don't be sheep. Don't feed the news trolls.

To answer your question. No you are not a bad person. In fact, I wish people back home were just a little bit more like you.
/thread

I wish our society wasn't so bent on proving the world is ending and all that sensationalism. Stop watching the news. Their ratings are what they care about. I have not watched anything news related other than Daily Show and Colbert report... and only cause they are reasonable and make fun of all the news networks.

OT: Don't over-react and yell and tell 'em to shut up. You will always look like a jerk that way. And anyone calling anyone else "Hitler" is a fucking idiot anyway. Just knowing and understanding the crisis is good enough. If you care, donate. That is all we can do.

The death count, so far, is roughly 10,000. That many people die everyday, so it's somewhat understandable.

You may be interested to know that twice that many (22,000) children under the age of five die every day. And they're dying of diarrhoea and malaria and these things can be foreseen and prevented. No one seems to care about them.

It's not what you're saying, it's how you're saying it. It's not a bad thing to be tired of hearing about an event that you have no involvement in and have no stake in. You've been blasted by news of it, I'm sure, so you probably don't want to hear anymore.

However, saying it like that is just asking to piss off someone. Try to ask then politely to change the subject, or mention that you've heard enough news about Japan instead. BTW, speaking of Japan, I hear...
On the particular day of my dick-ish outburst I put in my OP, I'd been with this girl ALL day and every time I'd try talking to her about something she'd loop the conversation back to talking about Japan in that very irritating "it's, like, SOOOOOO awful and stuff" kind of way girls like her talk about everything. I'd already asked her to stop bringing it up because, if I'm honest, hearing about it bums me out. She kept saying she wouldn't mention it except when she absolutely had to, but then she'd go right back to whining about the situation.

So yeah, I snapped. I don't normally say it as aggressively as that, but no matter how I say it people get pissy with me about 'not giving a shit' about the country. Even accused me of being racist a couple of times, and turned "sorry, but I really don't like hearing about it so much" to mean, essentially, that I hate all Japanese people and would be happy if their country sank into the ocean.
Well people being stupid isn't something I can account for, lol. But yeah I don't think it makes you a bad person still. I mean, like you said it bums you out and there's little you can actually do, so why would you really want to hear about it all the time?

I guess I'm guilty of that, though, the bringing things up too much thing. I seem to have my mom's ability of bringing up the most morbid thing possible in a time where it's the most inappropriate, lol. I remember my dad talking about going out with my mom and everyone would be laughing, and then she'd say something like "did you hear about those dead puppies?" or something :p. So I guess I'm pretty bad at it myself, lol.

I don't think it's terrible to not care very much, but it might be assholish to make a fuss about it. You don't necessarily know who really cares; maybe someone who seems to be going on and on about it actually knows people who were hurt or who died. You could hurt someone's feelings pretty badly, just because you're a bit annoyed. It's like if a coworker's family member dies -- I wouldn't personally be upset (especially if I didn't know the family member) but neither would I say "omg, it's been a week, Steve! I'm freaking over your mom, dude!" :p

No, not really. Without context, just randomly saying that you are sick of hearing about Japan could seem pretty insensitive. But when everyone keeps going on and on about it on these forums and in real life, it can get rather annoying. It would be one thing if it was something that personally affected you - say a kid kills himself and your friend knows him, and you ***** out your friend for the same reason. THAT would make you an asshole. Or, if you actually lived in the country in question, saying something like that might make you an asshole.

But if it doesn't affect you, you shouldn't pretend like you care if you don't.

Perfectly reasonable. The media over-covers these things, and then you have to hear about it from everyone else too, gets on my nerves as well.

I haven't gotten annoyed to the point of real anger about the hamminess over the Japan earthquake (or disasters in general), but I do think some people are just faking it to not feel bad.

The thing is, I really, honestly am not saddened by what has happened, and in a way, "don't care". People die every minute of every day, and no one expects you to care if that person doesn't involve you in some personal or emotional way; the only difference with this earthquake is that a sizable bunch of people died at once.
