so basically I've been playing Skyrim for the vast majority of my free time since I got it, 180+ hours, about 2 hours ago I let my little sister, who really liked Oblivion, start a file on it, after she got bored I attempted to reload my save only to discover she had overwritten it, (she's 16 and plays games a lot I kind of expect her to not make those kind of mistakes) I'll say again there were 180+ hours on that save so to put it lightly I was quite annoyed, and in my annoyance I said some very hurtful things, and reminded her of the last time I let her use something of mine (action replay DS cartridge, leant it to her, an hour later it was broken) and basically threw her out of my room demanding she not touch anything since I didn't want anything bursting into flames,

I guess my question is was my reaction reasonable? I calmed down pretty soon after I noticed that all but about 6 hours of it had been uploaded to online storage (I knew PS+ would pay off)

EDIT ok I admit it was pretty stupid of me to have only one manually saved file. to be honest that's all I've ever had for games, I grew up having to share games and storage space with siblings, and I guess the habit stuck, the thought to have more apart from a back-up never really occurred

EDIT 2: ok fair enough it was pretty assholish, it was a spur of the moment over-reaction by the way me and my sister are fine now

Sorry to say if you have 1 savefile for your whole game for a game like skyrim you are a bit dumb. There are many reasons for using several saveslots even if you do not share the game with family (many different reasons that a savefile gets corrupted(happed to me in fallout 3)).

Even more stupid if you only use the autosave feature since that will automatically overwrite when someone else plays a new game(at least if i remember correctly). So if the savefile was overwriten due to the fact you only use autosave for your savegame you are not only a bit dumb but also have to apologize to your sister since it wasn't her fault.

Take advice from very old point and click adventures ... "Save much and save often"

I currently have 150+ saves of Skyrim, and I've only clocked 50 hours in it. Do you not have any autosaves whatsoever?

Actually I probably need to delete several of my saves, but one save file for 180+ hours? Thats mental.

You should have realized something like this would have happened. I remember when I got the original Pokemon Blue for GameBoy, i let my sister play and she overwrote my file. I didnt get mad or yelled, I realized I should have known better and forgave the honest mistake.

If youre playing Skyrim I doubt youre a novice, so yeah. kind of an a-hole.

I'd say you over-reacted, I mean when something similar happened to me a while back I was pretty pissed too, but by and large I kept my cool. (Funny, when I was a kid I always got angry about the tiniest things, now it takes allot to really piss me off)
Anyway, try to reconcile the situation with your sister, apologize, explain that you feel bad, maybe even do something nice for her to make it up, show that you understand your actions where uncalled for and that you're genuinely sorry.
Just don't let this drive a steak through your relationship with her, I've been down that road bro, it's not fun.

It's alright to be pissed at anyone who erases any significant amount of time put into anything you care about but it's still only a game so you should get over it. I don't think your an A-hole. When my sister (why do we let them touch our stuff?) broke my copy of fallout 3 I was upset on the inside but on the outside I heaved a short sigh, removed the scratched disk from my Xbox, and started watching t.v. Getting mad isn't in my nature but I was still upset is the point I'm trying to make.

Normally I'd say "If you have to ask, lol jk yer fine." But no. No. What you did was an 8 on the douchebag scale, sorry. It's a video game, one that's actually EXTREMELY fun to make new characters on. And in all fairness, it's a pretty easy mistake, considering that most games have you save a new file but this one doesn't. I actually did the same thing first time I made a new character. So yeah, you shuld probably apologize.

Edit: Also, why don't yu make multiple saves for your character? It's pretty common to do and general practice.

Here's my response to your question.

If you have to ask if you are/were an asshole, then you probably are.

Yeah, it sucks she erased your game, but remember, at the end of the day, it is just a game. And now this gives you a reason to play the game again! She didn't break the disc or anything, so just restart. I hear the game is fun to make new characters in.

Apologize to your sister, say it was a bad reaction, and make up. Its Christmas, after all. Its a time for joy and merriment.

Dang, in my eyes, you have the self control of that monk who set himself on fire. I would have not has been as forgiving. Heck, we used to have a family of 6, but when one of them destroted my Zelda save file that was literally right before the final boss, welllll....a little time in juvie never hurt anybody.

First, only one save file? Stupid mistake.

Second, you only said some mean things? Who cares? It's not like you destroyed something of hers that she spent SEVEN AND A HALF STRAIGHT DAYS working on. Words are just words, and no sibling should hold a true grudge against another for a couple "mean words."

I have a younger sister, but fortunately I never allowed her to play anything of mine that had a save file attached EVER after losing a Pokemon save file so many years ago...I'll never forget the feeling...all of those hours...gone forever...*tear*

For some reason, Skyrim deletes the last save file if you start a new game. She probably didn't overwrite it. This happened when I had a go at a friend's copy. I made a new save and didn't touch the one already there and it deleted his save file.

It's not "just a game," though. If she just broke the disc, then hey, whatever, it's just a game. What she did, though, was destroy 180 hours of hard work. It'd be the same as formatting someone's harddrive or deleting several in-progress school papers. Try to comprehend 180 hours, man. That's irretrievable time, there, few words could be as harsh...

My brother deleted my 200+ hour save of Tales of Symphonia, and while I was upset, I realized that in the grand scheme of things, it wasn't really that important (I did shout a bit, but I apologized and forgave/was forgiven). Yeah, that was 180 hours of Skyrim that was deleted (which this whole thread has been made null and void by the fact that the OP stated his saves were on the PS Online storage or whatever), but its not like his sister deleted the 180 hours of fun that he had. He still has those fond memories of all that he did. Now he gets to do it again, and he has reason to do it. If you had 180 hours to put into the game originally, you most likely have at least another 100 hours to put into a whole new character, with new choices and new outcomes.

EDIT: Oh, and merry Christmas. Have a great day.

I would say you were well within reason and that I would have done the same thing........ If you weren't so silly as to only have one save.

I just don't think there is any excuse for that.

Regardless of the one file save...

Your instant reaction was a bit asshole-ish, but I and other would probably act the same when seeing Red after all that hard work. Now you've calmed down I would, if I was you, apologise to your Sister and make sure She knows what you said you didn't mean.

Oh, and don't let her touch your stuff again.

Thanks, Merry Christmas to you as well.

You raise a fair point about the memories of that time still being there, even if the physical record is gone forever (in a hypothetical situation, I know nothing of the online storage stuff).

I didn't know that the Playstation has online storage either. I can only imagine the OP's huge sigh of relief after he found that out.
