Why only have one save? I got 3 saves each for all my 3 characters just in case, highly recommend it :)

so basically I've been playing Skyrim for the vast majority of my free time since I got it, 180+ hours, about 2 hours ago I let my little sister, who really liked Oblivion, start a file on it, after she got bored I attempted to reload my save only to discover she had overwritten it, (she's 16 and plays games a lot I kind of expect her to not make those kind of mistakes) I'll say again there were 180+ hours on that save so to put it lightly I was quite annoyed, and in my annoyance I said some very hurtful things, and reminded her of the last time I let her use something of mine (action replay DS cartridge, leant it to her, an hour later it was broken) and basically threw her out of my room demanding she not touch anything since I didn't want anything bursting into flames,

I guess my question is was my reaction reasonable? I calmed down pretty soon after I noticed that all but about 6 hours of it had been uploaded to online storage (I knew PS+ would pay off)

EDIT ok I admit it was pretty stupid of me to have only one manually saved file. to be honest that's all I've ever had for games, I grew up having to share games and storage space with siblings, and I guess the habit stuck, the thought to have more apart from a back-up never really occurred
First world problems much? It's just a game, it's replaceable. Your sister made a mistake, it was an accident. It's alright to be upset but it's not exactly the end of the world. I would apologize to her. Also, imo it's your fault for not backing up your save files. Save files can go corrupt or get damaged. Always best to have redundancy in something you invested almost 200 hours in.

Although you should have a back up, if your sister plays enough games to know such things she is at fault here too. My Brother and I used to fight all the time a few PS games and Pokemon game saves because we both wanted to play. He also scratched my PS2 discs to an unplayable level (I miss you Deus ex) and I went crazy at him. What happens, happens, I don't think you're an A-hole.

I totally understand your reaction here. In this day and age, even non-gamers understand the importance of and difference between saving separately and overwriting a file.

That said, as many people above have pointed out, you REALLY need to start having multiple saves - particularly for Skyrim.

I have had glitches cause me to lose progress, as well as an annoying incident where I was wanted for serious crimes with no way to pay a bounty/go to jail. It was either: run away (and never visit Whiterun again), die (and the be back to square one) or load up an older save file and try things again.

Moral of the story - get your household better educated about saving etiquette!

I'm not sure it makes you an asshole as long as you apologise for it. People react in different ways to that sort of thing. But as Somonah said, I don't see why you can't just start a new toon and move on if that circumstance arises again. Itn't having multiple plays through the most fun part of a Bethesda RPG?

No it makes you a human, we all do dumb things, as long as you felt remorse and made up you are doing good. I mean you're sharing your stuff with your sister, that alone makes you a pretty nice person.

A single action never defines a person, only the average does.

I feel like you may have overreacted a bit, but it's understandable. Losing 180 hours of your life due to someone else's negligence isn't easy to take in stride.

I currently have 150+ saves of Skyrim, and I've only clocked 50 hours in it. Do you not have any autosaves whatsoever?
Well since it seems he only has 1 save that probably means he only uses autosave, bethesda games (at least as far as i know) use 1 autosave for all characters. So if that is the reason he lost his save it is his fault not his sister.

actually I had one save file not counting the autosaves, of which there were 3, all of them were overwritten, as for only having one manual save file, old habits I guess, in the 90s when I was a kid I had to share consoles games and memory card space (when the Playstation came along) with 2 and later 3 other siblings, so basically we all agreed that we'd each have a save file, and well back then there wasn't any need to have more than one, so I guess I just never lost the "this is my save fille" mentality

Well my Skyrim will have one or two manual saves, three auto-saves, and a quicksave. So yeah, you should start keeping a back up. Hell, I have one for each alt cause I just know sooner or later I'm going to overwrite one with the wrong alt. At least until some modder makes me a save file organiser mod. As to your reaction, I'm a bit biased since my younger brother is an idiot and has broken, or just taken a lot of my things. But I don't think your ultimatum was over the top, swearing at her or whatever might have been.

Thanks for clearing that up. Still honestly feel you overreacted a bit(with the saying mean stuff bit) but then i grew up with games without a save system (or a big ass password system). Have saves lost due to dying memory cards , saving at the wrong place, crashing systems , family deleting savefiles or a game corrupting savefiles(only time i really got angry was when fallout 3 corrupted the autosave. That was more because the previous normal save was before the endbattle i broken steel). Also except for a lot of portable games most games have many many save slots try to keep that in mind and use it :)

Good to hear your sister and you are fine. I do understand you got angry when it happens and 180+ hours is a lot but saying mean things can wreck more then just lost time spend. Next time just be careful when something happens not to say thing in anger you can not take back.

ps. It is not that i do not understand why you did what you did.

You only had one, non backed up, save file? For a Bethesda game? Even then, I'm sure there are methods of recovering previous file states.

I'm hitting 500 in number for my saves in skyrim. I cull my saves at the end of each session, but I always create new ones in case I have a bug and have to jump back to before it. My cousin once saved over a copy of Pokemon Red with all 150 on it. Ever since I've never let him touch something of mine, if he wants to see my new phone for example, I hold it in front of his face and press buttons.

I'm confused. What part of this was supposed to make you sound like an asshole? All I'm getting is that a sibling who is really old enough to know better, either being lazy or just making a mistake that cost you 180+ hours. If this happened to me I think there would be much worse then "some very hurtful things". If anything I think you have done about as good as you could in this situation. But look on the bright side at least now you can start again with a different race :)

Find her diary, set it on fire, and then go "Teehee, whoopsie, I made a boo-boo! Forgive me?" and see exactly how magnanimous she is.

Scratch that, it's Christmas! Worry less, eat and drink more :)

EDIT 2: ok fair enough it was pretty assholish, it was a spur of the moment over-reaction by the way me and my sister are fine now
Edit 1: I cant say I blame You for that. Hell, even I do it. It isnt exactly Your first consideration: What if My Relative accidentally overwrites the File!
Edit 2: You were upset. It was not assholish. What were You going to do, give Her a Hug and tell Her everything was going to be okay? You had every right to be upset, and You both knew Youd get over it. And finding the Backup would have helped to calm Your Nerves.

Now, ignoring the Edits, I think it was a Reasonable Response.

Now to go read the Replies that try and tell You its just a Game or something (Which Im only assuming is actually going to be there)
