I can't wait to see gangs of kids with air rifles and slingshots sitting on the rooftops near their local Dominos waiting to knock a free meal out of the sky.

A taco company tried to do this a year or two ago. The FDA said no.

It's a cool idea, but still has some flaws.
If you're a good shot with a (American) football or baseball you could knock the pizzas free mid-flight and steal them.

What if someone knocks it out of the sky to take someones pizza! Then the customer has to pay the bill for that too. How will you know when ti has arrived? How will it perform in bad weather?

Why, oh dear lord why am I asking these questions when I don't like their pizza!?
Because shitty pizza or not. There is potential for free pizza. That's why!

What happens if I order say... 25 pizzas for a party that I'm never going to have? Or I become a falconer? All I want is a little fun and chaos!
When you put it that way, it sounds AWESOME!
Right! Step out side after a big meal and think to yourself, "Man, I couldn't eat another bite."

*sees a pizza just floating through the sky*

Fuck it! I'll be hungry again at some point.

I'll shall name him "Noid". After the character from the old Domino's commercials.

Just order a pizza, send it to your neighbor's address, and sit on your roof with a BB gun. Well, maybe something with a bit more kick than that. Potato gun, maybe? I'll need to run some tests. And yes, before you ask, I do have so much time on my hands that I can test different ways to steal pizza from flying robots.

That might be my favorite sentence I've ever said.

Also, I can't believe Domino's is this unpopular. They let you put hot sauce as a topping! It's the perfect food if you're mad at your stomach! You won't find that at Pizza Hut, that's for sure.

Am I supposed to be distressed by this in some way? Because in my eyes right now this is kind of awesome.

if i had teh leet skillz (and actually liked Dominos Pizzas) i would make it my lifes work at this point to hack this :p (jk.)

but Dominos is crap...as is Pizza Hut and all the rest of the "famous" chains.
i was actually taken aback when i saw what they consider a decent amount of pizza topping.
seriously, the best pizzas in the UK come from kebab/curry shops.

still at least julian assange can get (something approximating) a pizza...
I imagine he would get a different drone arrive to him... one with a different payload! :p It would not be the drone he was looing for!

OT: This sounds cool and all, but they would seriously need to rethink air laws if they start to do this. You wouldn't be able to get them delivered if you live too close to an airfield, and you wouldn't be able to order them if you live in too congested areas!

Also, wouldn't this mean that Dominoes then trust you unsupervised with their equipment, as you unclip it yourself?
And it's not as good if you live in a block of flats, as you can no longer get it to your door, and you would have to get it to your roof or outside the front!

I can also see this being dangerous in some urban areas... especially around high rises where there is a lot of paved areas with people around...

And how long before they start getting stolen upon landing by bunches of Romanians so they can be sold for parts? (Not being deliberately racist, but it was Romanians who were jailed yesterday for stealing £120,000 of copper power cables from substations.)

Sure it's a nifty idea but I can see a few flaws/ cons to this idea-

I can assume it can't be used during heavy weather like heavy rain (well could still be done) or windy. I hardly doubt it can be used during thunder nad lightning.

What if the person nick the Pizza cover or the drone itself (don't forget people can be jerks sometime).

Again maybe some jerk people try to somehow bring the drone down if that's even possible.

I see no real issue with this, the less delivery teams we have driving around grants us a few things:

1) Saves money
2) Less pollution
3) No risk of car accidents and potentially harming the driver / safer employees
4) Much, much faster delivery.

You already give them your card info when you order by phone, so there's no risk of them losing money, and should anything happen to the drone you already gave them your name, home address, phone number, and a valid credit card so it won't work out well for you. Only issue I can see is undertrained delivery teams who make a mistake flying the drone by not understanding proper distancing, handling wind, etc.

Very unlikely there will be any collisions as there will most likely only be 1 drone per area total (there is absolutely no reason to get more than one considering the speed of the drone is extreme compared to a car), and the drones don't fly high enough to really be near any planes. The biggest risk, again, is to the drone itself.
Negative point: Delivery Man out of a job.
Uh... then who's flying the drone? The deliveryman just turns into an operator position. That is not negative.

"Some jerk"? Half the people in this thread are comtemplating such things! Along with me. It can't be too hard to use a net to capture one...

To all those people saying you'd get a slingshot to take the thing down, pft. What you want is a pizza pirate drone to attack and capture other drones.

That's cool...but what if I want a 2 liter of Dr. Pepper too?

Joking aside I think a lot of delivery guys and gals are going to be rather upset with this. As neat as it is to have your pizza delivered by a robot, this is pointless and just going to be people out of jobs...Just seems like way too much technology for something that's already been well tended to.

Isn't that a self defeating strategy on their part? The only reason people order Dominos is the hope that it will arrive late and therefore be free. Nobody actually likes their pizza... No human anyway. I'd rather have cardboard with cheese. :)

Yes it is. That takes training and it isn't something Billy 17 year old from the highschool will be trusted with. Assuming that drones remain expensive for another decade or so, they'll be changing who they hire in a big way for such a position.

A drivers license ain't going to cut it anymore.

Haha, wow.
While it would open up many new possibilities, it would also bring some problems. I actually wonder when (and if) this will actually be used frequently for delivering stuff.

I AM a Domino's deliveryman and I say...no. Fuck no. Being able to get out of the kitchen and drive is what keeps me sane. Besides, people aren't going to be inclined to tip a robot.

Then there's the additional training I'll have to go through, schooling (which will probably cost a bundle), the fact that I'd be responsible for a million dollar machine, yadda yadda yadda. Ugh, no thanks. I'll stick with my truck. Even with the pay increase it won't be worth it.

Yep, we need to retain those low skill jobs even when superceed by more efficient alternatives because........

Captcha: dollar signs, you minx, you, captcha
Because those low skill jobs help pay the bills until we're qualified to take the high skill job we've been working for. Without them, there goes paying for tuition, rent, gas, food, etc.

All that being said, this probably isn't going to happen, at least not while I'm working there. Too expensive to implement for now, so it's really not much more than a novelty.

Yeah...no human would ever like their pizza...XD
[sub]I'm not too picky when it comes to pizza and it tastes better than it used too.[/sub]

OT: Well, that make for an interesting interview that's for sure. I don't think the FDA will like this much though.
