So, Donald Trump, using his popularity, decided to tweet a new campaign video promoting himself.

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/717003103871115267

Tell me if it looks familiar.

So, as a Mass Effect fan, I just laughed at this and cracked up. I'm secretly kind of honored that Donald Trump had the guts to rip off Mass Effect and used it for his purposes. The other discussion was EA taking down the video and the discussion of fair use. I'm not too sure where I stand on that.

What'd you think?

EA Copyright Claimed the video that he posted, so no idea how similar the two are.
For some reason, I can still see it when I click on the Twitter link.

I did manage to find what seems like the video at the link below if you want to link it in your OP. But I'm not sure if this is it because it seems too much like a parody. Granted I won't put anything past this stupid campaign at this point.

OT: If this is actually the video, holy fuck is this one stupid attempt at pandering to young voters.

I'm told by some people that the original video was actually making fun of Trump. Then a Trump supporter saw the video, missed the joke, and re-posted it on youtube. Then Trump tweeted it.

Honestly, I don't really care about him 'reusing' old video game material. Its the fact that it's voiced, quite obviously, by Martin Sheen, that bugs me, sense the less astute non-gamer may miss the point and actually think that Martin Sheen is endorsing Trump. It's a scummy thing to do, and even though Trump technically didn't make the video, his obvious attempt to try and mislead people is disgusting.

This video is likely the best piece of post-modern memetic political satire I've ever seen.

ME3 was famous for it's s..lightly disappointing ending, let's put it like that, about having to choose between three options where the only different thing was which color each ending was wearing.

One where you genocide the invading race but lose your means of modern industrialization. One where the invading synths and the native biological life forms "merged" and formed a hybrid that was supposed to be some super race but was actually a super slave. And one where you took over the invaders and used 'em as your slaves as they slowly replaced all biological life on the world.

Later they added another ending where you could walk away and everybody died, the end, boo hoo.

But even after the backlash, after raising 60k for a charity torpedoed by Penny Arcade and sending cupcakes of lulz to Bioware, they patched over the ending but didn't added an option where you could successfully remove the ke...rnel of the synths and replace it with something that can live harmoniously with biological life, and then go back home and kick back with your digital waifu/hasubando like you can do on practically all open-ended arr pee gees.

Looking back at the ending and looking at that video now the only question I have is if the game didn't had that option because Americans were only supposed to choose between one of these three options as far as immigration policy went and thus should start coming to terms with it before the subject came up, or if Americans were supposed to be presented with these options ahead in order to reject 'em as failure states - after all, all the kids who were teenagers when the game came out are just about on the right age to vote now, 4 years later...

Off topic, but I always liked the bad destroy ending.

I felt my Renegade Sheppard said she'd bring peace to the galaxy at any cost, and well... technically a universe devoid of sentient life is a form of a peace.

But the ending only works well in that context, I understand.

Shit, Trump is a kind of Renegade isn't he? We're fucked.

I'm getting very conflicted chills right now.

Anyway, just so we're clear, this wasn't something made by Trump's campaign team to appeal to the kids. It was put together by some random person, possibly a supporter, possibly someone making fun of Trump (that the two are hard to tell apart probably says a lot).

Then it got shared around until it was eventually tweeted out by Trump's own Twitter account.

I wonder if we'll see gamer outrage over EA copyright claiming this. Fair use and all that.

If true then they (creator of the video) messed it up, as I rather think the video makes Trump look rather great, joke or not. One of the best things I've seen lately.

Its always tempting to let this kind of thing slide because of the intended target, but honestly that's the kind of rationale that makes internet discourse so impossible these days. I've not seen the video, but if it was genuinely transformative, then however distasteful Trump is he should be allowed to use it. I think the better solution would be a counter video mocking Trump, or even playing up his "Illusive Man" fantasy by juxtaposing Trump speeches over the horrors of Cerberus research and use that instead. That way, if Trump said it was too far, they could retort with his famous line: "We didn't start it."

i can see the headlines tomorrow:

"Oppression, exclusion, and violent hatred from video game developers From Software: Dark Souls 3 runs into controversy for not having proper character selection for incompetent business-people, corporate-puppet politicians and smug cunts in general."

"Anita Sarkissian comments: "This kind of outright bigotry is indicative of the CiS-gendered misogyny we've come to expect from gamers, who are trying to actively trying to keep potential presidential candidates from plagiarizing video games they obsess over, and are outright REFUSING to make accommodations for these brave, tortured outsiders, who, like myself, legit just want to play video games and not them as platforms for ulterior agendas. Oh, hello Mr. Trump, please take that huge bag of money and just pour it down my throat nomnomnomnomnomnom."

Meanwhile, Alex Jones is "pretty damn sure" the illuminati are trying to suppress Trump's influence, and totally has proof, which he will reveal, but only if people stop making videos of him turning into a "Super-Saiyan," by using clips from his Youtube show and the terrorist propaganda videos, Dragonball Z

please, if any space aliens can read this... Exterminatus Earth. Can not be saved.

Yeah, but this is Donald Trump you're talking about; every time he appears on my TV, I have to subconsciously stop myself from wiping grease stains off of the screen.

I'm not even American and the thought of him running your country turns my stomach.

I don't think this would actually qualify. Fair use covers things along the lines of criticism, parody, news reporting, and the like. This, by contrast is very political in nature. While its intended effect could very well have been satire or parody, that is not well conveyed through the work itself. Additionally, the work doesn't really have a meaningfully transformative element to it but instead apes the copyrighted material for its own purposes in a way which doesn't seem dissimilar to "The Cat NOT in the Hat!", which was not considered fair use.
