It's not cheating if it's in the game. I will say, however, that if the combination makes it so that people can't really play the game because you can dominate that hard, it's very close to cheating. As an example, let's take the Marathon, Lightweight, Commando class. If you really like running around and stabbing people with a knife, take Marathon, Lightweight and Ninja/SitRep instead. You can still have your fun without ruining the experiences of everyone else because you lunge across the map with an instant kill move after dropping down from the tallest building on the map like some demonic harpy on high, snatching away any hopes and dreams I may have for living more than ten seconds before immediately dashing off towards where I'm going to spawn at 88 miles per hour to create some backwards time shift loop that makes it so you're right behind me the second I'm alive!!!

...Sorry, what were we talking about again?

If you're using something that was put in the game, and using it well (As in using it properly, not spamming), that's fine by me, no matter how many times you kill me using it. If you use stuff that was put in the game and wasn't thought would be used by the creators, grats to you. But if you use some dickhead strategy that basically relies on spamming the hell out of some slightly overpowered weapon while running around the map aimlessly, screw you.

Yeah...I was kind of hoping that your example for this would actually be a good game, or even a half-way decent one...hell even a mediocre game would be fun to discuss, but Call of Duty? Well whatever, yeah those mechanics are so broken, there are some pretty easy ways to break the whole system.

Let this be a lesson to everyone: 'Create a Class' (with the liberty allowed in CoD) pretty much breaks a game.

And though, yes, these are pretty much rock-solid grounds to 'hate the game,' I've got to say one may go so far as to 'hate the developer.' I mean honestly, it is not like other shooters have not been patched to improve the multiplayer function with more exact hit-boxes or more balanced weapons! Though to be fair, most Call of Duty games are so broken, I don't think anything could very well fix one of them.

Its not cheating, its just incredibly cheap. Most dont care if the game is fun, they just wanna win :/

I just quit those cheap games and start again.

This kind of attitude is kinda popular in TF2. Particularly with the Pyro class. People keep calling him a noob class just because a player can just press W+M1 to use his main weapon and get kills. I can kinda agree about Pyro players who do nothing but this, as they usually don't do well or contribute to the team depending on the skill of the other team.

But the way I see it, if you're getting killed over and over by a Pyro player who abuses that tactic. A very easy tactic to exploit I might add, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Also, in my opinion, if you think the Backburner is a noob weapon, then you may as well call the Spy a noob class because they basically work the same way. As both can be countered if you watch your back.

Armor lock? Really? Armor lock spam fights always end in backstab upon backstab upon backstab. Its soooooooo eaassssy to exploit armor lock. Nobody I know has had a problem with it :/ I dunno what to say, maybe you're just unlucky.

See, if a game is unbalanced, and someone is exploiting it, as much of a dick thing that it could be, trying to take the game seriously is also just as hopeless. If you want a competitive or fair fight in games with these exploits, then you should be playing on closed servers with rules or something. Trying to yell at kids online so they follow the rules is about as productive as stapling your eyelids together.

I've never had a problem with finding which games I play are made for casual fun, and competitive, and playing each appropriately with a different set of expectations. Super Smash Brothers? Fine use Lucario with full item drop ratio on the Ice Climbers level. I DON'T CARE.

But League of Legends? You better be in your goddam lane with an adequate connection. And stop feeding gosh darn it.

...if it's a competitive multiplayer game that's trying to take said competition seriously with an overpowered class/weapon/character/whathaveyou... that would be poor game design. Hate the game.

In most cases, exploiting some mechanic that is not obviously a bug is not cheating. The current hot example in my mind is in BF3 where mounting the M26 to a rifle with a heavy barrel causes the weapon to be instantly lethal at far longer ranges than usual is obviously a bug. The barrel affecting the attached object is telling enough and if you combine it with the fact that all shotguns were horrifyingly nerfed nearly to the point of uselessness the case in ironclad.

By contrast, the witch build in Call of Duty is an example of unforeseen consequences. The combination of map design, close quarters and significant speed advantage means such a build is more viable than was probably intended. But since the features worked perfectly fine in all other combinations, it could easily be argued that it wasn't a bug. When you further consider such a thing does not present an unreasonable advantage (and, given the lethality of COD's multiplayer, such a thing is easily countered if the player is prepared), I'd say it's fine.

The former is cheating. It might be smart but, then, cheating has always been a good way to gain an advantage and is generally frowned upon. The latter is simply a matter of playing the greater metagame. Eve Online had it's nano age where ships could travel so fast in combat that they were all but impossible to kill. Dawn of War 2's early days had a time where the Space Marine army had no viable close combat options in the early game and thus such an army was best countered by an assault heavy force. Attempts to nerf the combination of frag rounds and shotguns in Battlefield resulted in the entire weapon class falling largely out of favor.

In the case of the former: I have nothing but disgust for such things. In the case of the latter I would simply say that refusing to adapt when the rules change is the foolish move.

Well they aren't cheating, as the rule makers permit it.

The problem with Danger Close (the explosive damage perk) and one man army is you aren't at any significant disadvantage relative to your capability, you can still have a good assault rifle for anyone that gets close.

There is a problem with a game where one of the players is having a lot of fun with a class and everyone else is frustrated, that's not a good game. Maybe the way they "deal with it" is to just not play the game so you won't have anyone to play with. And those who do stick around will be having a bad time and this is going to engender bad attitudes and poor gamesmanship.

I tend to look at it on a case by case basis. It depends on the people you're playing with and the scenario in question. But a lot of the time it falls under "Yeah you're allowed to, but you're still an EA strength dick for it"

Doing well as a W+M1 Pyro against people with any sense is harder than people think. Not to mention that even if you're playing it "properly" Pyro's pretty much a kamikaze class.

Still can't believe Valve hasn't fixed the first stage of Dustbowl though. One resupply cabinet and it's in full view of the permanently open gate, and therefore almost always covered in stickies. Not to mention all the defending spawns only have one entrance you can't see out of, meaning spawn-camping becomes trivially easy. Goooooooood job Valve.

Good point about Dustbowl. But at least it's not like the PS3 version of the game that was (as far as I know)never patched. People were floating above the map building sentries where people can't see them.
