I help everyone because I am not a bad person.
This, with a few added points.

- I don't give money to beggars, but I will buy them some food/drink if they're hungry/thirsty.
- I don't help (as in, try to stop) people who are trying to commit suicide.

Ah, yes. Suicidal people. That is something I just do not put up with. Waste of breath, imo.

when i was in london some lass asked me to take a photo of her with her camera,so yes i am a helper within reason. That being said i had just done the same thing for my brother so she must have seen me not run away and deduced that i was trustworthy.
It's good to know that other people think before handind personal items over to complete strangers

I hate everyone around me because I live in a place such as that, so I rarely help anyone in terms of giving them things. When it's like, a seat on the bus, I'm obviously polite, but actually giving people say money or food, the answer is no.

This post isn't directed exclusively at Sennz0r but s/he provides a good starting point:

I hate the fact that people don't help anymore because they're afraid of lawsuits but I naturally hate the people who sue the helpful ones even more.
To be fair, many (not all) of the frivolous lawsuits you hear about are made up or reported inaccurately. For example, the guy who sued the mobile home manufacturer because his car crashed when he put the autopilot on while driving down the freeway and went back to make a drink? Never happened. The woman who sued McDonald's because she spilled take-away coffee on herself? That happened, but she had some legitimate complaints - the coffee was superheated, for one, not just boiled.

Which is not to say that people can't be dicks.

I was sitting with a couple of girls on a bench in the city when a homeless guy leaned in and asked, fairly politely, if we could spare any change. He said he had epilepsy. From what I know about epilepsy it's hardly the kind of illness that makes you homeless, but whatever, he seemed ok so I had a look in my wallet. I had a handful of really small change and a ten dollar note, so I gave him the coins and said "not much, but I hope it helps". This guy stared at the coins and then stared at me with this look of absolute hatred - I mean a really furious dangerous look, I honestly thought he'd pull a knife on me. He kinda forced himself to smile and said "nah, nah, I'm not going to rob you... but if I WAS gonna rob you I'd do it like this" and he proceeded to step over to one of the girls' bags and grab it and make like he was about to run off. He blabbed some more about how "I won't rob you", still holding the bag, before tossing it down and walking off in a fury.

Listen to the words of Admiral Snackbar...

Wait, that isn't his name.

In other words, don't go all the way out on a limb for someone you don't know, but you have to at least step a few inches away from the trunk, right?

Well, once a girl asked us for money one night when we had armfuls of shopping, my mum said no and told us people could steal your shopping while you're digging around in your purse, or steal your purse for that matter...

Was she right to do that? I'm always paranoid about people like that, but I used to live in London so that's a given...

I would help but that said I would not give them a hankerchief, even though I don't use them, because you put it back in your pocket and I wouldn't want someone else snot in my pocket.

In your case I'd agree, but I think the person asked for a paper one.

I never give money. People always ask me simply because I have large fluffy hair-doo and I seem to have a somewhat boyish face; I look nice and easy.

So, people plague me for money whenever I enter a large town, that or drugs. So I've got an internal script for these events.

Unfortunate individual; "Excuse me, may I have some money?"
Me; "I will be happy to buy you food or a similar item sir/madam, but you won't get raw money."
Annoying individual; "But why not?"
Me; "Because you'll spend it on drugs."
Bum; "How dare you! Have at thee, warrior!"

*Epic fight ensues in which I lop off their hand, shove the stump in their mouth and watch them drown in their own blood.*

Me; Muahhaha!

Well, the last bit rarely happens, but you can't say I'm not prepared.
Dude, you have issues.

I blame videogames.

Seriously though, you honestly haven't heard anything of that kind of variety on this forum?

Really?

Still, I find I have this annoying macho want which makes me more likely to give help to aid to people who are elderly, a small child, or female; regardless of age or physical state.

Pregnant women could probably safely ask for my PIN number.

Do you not have a Samaritan act in the states? In Canada there is no way someone could be sued for bandaging someone's cut. Any aid given they can't be held responsible even if it results in an infection, even if you are not first aid certified. While it may seem like a bad thing because people with no knowledge or diseases would abuse it or something... generally people are not that sadistic and it only ends up that more people try to give aid when it is needed.

Personally if I'm sitting on the street bleeding out, I'd rather someone at least TRY and help me, instead of walking away because they are afraid I will sue them for not doing it properly.

Sure you should 'help' if you want to play the good samaratan and all that, but lending someone else a hanky is just gross. If I had asked someone for a tissue, and they said "No, but you can borrow my hanky" I'd think theyre were weird. Hankies are gross anyway, as you are basically carrying around all the germs with you instead of throwing it away as you would a tissue.

I am fortunate enough to live in the UK.

Here people thank you for helping them, it's something I rather like about my country.
Wow thats sanctimonious, apparently another trait of us English is to think were a cut above our 'boorish American cousins'.
I take offence to that, We SCOTS think we are above the boorish americans too!
