Anything that goes on too long, which probably encapsulates half of all anime ever made.

So, yeah, this doesn't really count for films, but when checking a series, go online first to check if the amount of episodes isn't 100+.

That, and Black Rock Shooter, would be my picks. Those are the only two animes I have hated right from the first episode.

I just find the anime far too despressing for my taste and I never get all of the religon subtext either. Honestly those past Critial Miss bash on the show explain it better on why I didn't like it.

Total crap?
Chrome shelled regios
Avoid this anime at all costs, it was so bad, that after it I adopted rule that if half of anime is bad I stop watching it.

MEEEEEEEH?
Aria scarlet ammo.
It was slightly more entertaining than watching paint drying, but only slightly.

Overrated?
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Not bad anime, but definitely not that good as people claim it is. Tastes differ.

Most terrible anime tend to have pretty great manga in my experience - at least with shonen series'. The big three OBVIOUSLY aren't worth anybody's time watching, but (in my opinion) the manga of One Piece, Naruto and Bleach are pretty good - especially One Piece - mainly because there's literally no need for filler in them, and little to no recapping, which as people have said, tends to take up about half of every episode of said series'. However, even the Naruto manga seems to be stuck in a never-ending filler battle now...

And my worst anime experiences? A couple of them have been mentioned, but to reiterate, I tend to despise anything that reeks of being written for (or perhaps by) teenage boys that have a gore fetish.

e.g.
High School of the Dead - dear god, just disgusting levels of fan-service and all around mean spirited.

Gantz - I read the manga for a while, hated almost all of it but kept giving it the benefit of the doubt as I'd heard good things. I gave up after the level of gore-porn was taken to another level with that whole gunman massacre thing.

I also seem to just hate some things that people consider good:

Code Geass - absolutely terrible show. The plot is flawed in too many different ways and the characters are all totally unlikable.

Toaru Majutsu no Index/Kagaku no Railgun - I remember quite liking the first series of each of these when watching them when they first came out. I can't actually remember too much of Index, but Railgun was kind of nice though I only really liked Saten and Uiharu. Trying to come back to the pair of them recently, all I found was a pile of trash. I have no idea whether it was me or them that changed - and I can't entirely explain why - but I can't stand them now.

Finally, (good god, this has gone on longer than anticipated, I just have a hell of a lot of pent up ani-rage) there are shows that I loved which totally ruined themselves, and I'm thinking of one in particular right now:

Darker than Black - "This anime is great! Really interesting story, characters and powers. But you know what the first season missed? Obvious appeal for loli-perverts with a magical girl transformation!"

Elfenlied.

Would you believe me if I told you it wasn't the gratuitous violence and nudity that lead me to dislike it? That actually made it salvageable in my opinion and compelled me to make my own take on the anime. No, what brought Elfenlied down for me was the characters. They weren't believable, none of their actions to me seemed realistic or what someone in that situation would actually do. The behaviour of Kouta and Yuka in particular was so surreal to me; I just couldn't invest myself in their fantasy world.

Doesn't matter much though, it's still enjoyable just in a different way.
What kind of weirded me out on Elfen Lied was the reactions of Yuka. So your cousin/childhood friend[footnote]Yes, I get that in Japan cousin-love is accepted, not the issue here.[/footnote] is having an apparently sexual relationship/exploiting a mentally challenged girl, so your first reaction is... jealousy?

What the Hell?

The Worst Anime's I have ever watched and don't recommend for anyone is:

Oreimo: This thing actually starts out to be quite funny, especially if you have watched a lot of anime, but in the second season things just start getting pervish. Not just the fact that the guy starts dating girls that are too young for him but (small) but at the end of the season after dating literally every girl in the show he proclaims his love for his sister. I was so utterly disgusted by this anime that I have been finding it hard to start watching any Anime. This is kinda sad because I've been watching Anime for the last 11 years now.

Mirai Nikki: This anime is deeply disturbing. It has scenes in it that no human being should ever have to go through (rape, brutal murder etc.). If the gore and crazy people that you should supposedly be emotionally connected to aren't enough to make you mad the main character is actually just entirely useless to the world. He literally moans and cries up until the last few minutes of the series, here he does some complicated uselessness, and then the series ends where he keeps on being useless (he spends "thousands" of years crying because he had to kill the girl that was trying to kill him). If anyone dares to fight me on this I just want you to remember that he killed all of his friends because of the girl he KNOWS is crazy. She had him locked up in an abandoned building with the skeletons of her dead parents and actually tried to (probably) rape him.

If any one reads these take my word for it do not even consider watching these anime's. IF you meet a friend that likes these you should probably get them checked into a psych ward.

Guilty Crown.

It feels like bad fan-fiction written by some highschool kid with himself as the protagonist.

After 12 episodes of the most utterly horrible main character I've ever seen in an anime not dying and being replaced by someone even remotely likable I gave up and stopped watching.
You only got to episode 12? You lucky bastard. It actually got worse after that... I wish I had the good sense to stop when you did, but people told me it would bet better with time. it didn't. -.-

i am going to have to ask you why?
Feels! Feels everywhere! >.<

Well, I suppose if you want to feel like you got kicked in the chest, you should go watch it.
i don't mind feels not sure about the kicked in the chest part
Clannad is completely fine. It's Clannad After Story that hurts the most T.T
You really cannot blame a show for doing what it was made to do.
And just so you know, the original visual novel is even better (or worse, in case you cannot deal with these kooky things called "emotions"... :p)

I also see a lot of people mentioning Code Tranwreck, and I have to ask: What the hell is wrong with you people!? That is the single most enjoyable "so bad it's good" show ever made!

I commend you on your strong will. I only lasted 5 episodes before I called quits. This guy is not joking, the protagonist is making Eren Jaeger from Attack on Titan look like a charming and well-developed character.

That is because there is no religious subtext. Hideaki just thought that Christian symbols and terminology is cool.

That said, the series really is hyped way beyond its worth, and while I wouldn't put it into this thread (it's not something I would want people to stray away from per se), I was never a fan of it.

Now, for what I would nominate here?

Akira: Read the manga instead.

Naruto: Read the manga instead, optionally watch the episodes with the fight-scenes for the explosions and stuff.

Fate/stay Night: Read the visual novel instead.

That nonexistent Tsukihime anime: It doesn't exist, so read the visual novel instead.

Guilty Crown: It's a piece of excrement, read something actually worthwhile instead.

Most of anything reviewed by Bennett the Sage in Anime Abandon.

Time to roast a sacred cow here:

Dragon Ball Z. Good Lord, what a boring show.

The plot moves at a glacial pace, with way too much pointless filler between fights. Even the fights themselves are tedious. The combatants spend most of the time floating in place while grimacing and yelling like they're suffering from a chronic case of constipation. What's worse, when one of them starts charging an ultimate-bullshit beam attack, the opponent does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to prevent it, instead opting to stay in place and stand there all idiotic and slack-jawed. Just fly up there and punch him already, dammit!

Go watch Team Four Star's Dragon Ball Z Abridged instead. It covers the main plot points more succinctly and is way more entertaining to boot.
I whole heartedly agree with this.
If you didn't watch Dragonball Z as a young 'un, don't watch it now, nostalgiaCam is just about the only thing this show has going for it.

However Team Four Star's Abridged series is the shit. It's probably funnier for those who have watched Z, but for those who haven't it still manages to raise plenty of laughs.

I can't really think of anything to advise against that hasn't already been said. Personally I would advise against Bleach and Naruto, my friends were really into them but I just couldn't see the appeal. GitS and Bebop were always more my thing.

Could we maybe just cut out the middleman and say every anime series ever?

That's not professional though, so I'll myself just say everything that isn't Meitantei Holmes, Montana Jones, and if you're a fan of the respective series, Parappa TV and Devil May Cry.

Attack on Titan. It is hyped to hell and back, and really doesn't deserve it. It has only slightly better pacing than other shonin anime in that consistently fuckall happens save for a few episodes. I got bored halfway through and started watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (which you should watch if you haven't already) instead.

You pretty much JUST bought my whole mindset to a complete halt due to that comment. It was like the train conductor of my brain pulled the freeze lever and it created a giant crash of train carts behind it.
Now I have to say the immediate "Are you serious?"

I can understand why you would say that just because of the feels, but I think that is what makes it so great just like any KEY stuff.
Although my opinion is pretty flawed since I'm probably the biggest fan of that anime on here. XD

Okay, now that is done my mind process can get started again.
My choices apart from my biased opinion of Sword Art Online and Attack on Titan would have to be ...

[sub][sub]Any harem genre anime, the romance goes nowhere and all you get are a bunch of boobs/musclemen and nakedness.[/sub][/sub]
To Love Ru and Infinite Stratos.
These two anime just got so boring quickly ... honestly I can't say any more, I don't want to bring up the memories nightmares.

On topic: Another one I thought of, a few years ago, I tried watching Sailor Moon as an adult to try to recapture some of my childhood.[footnote]I was a six year old girl at the time. What do you want from me?[/footnote]

Good God. Never again. I didn't make it five minutes.

Fate/Zero. Yes, I said it.

Granted, I only saw the first 6 episodes, but I think that's giving it more than a fair chance to entertain me. It didn't do so once. Extremely confusing setting, characters you don't care about with motivations that feel barely explained, the first episode being essentially 50 minutes of all exposition and a base concept that feels better suited for a video game. I was really hyped when I first started watching it, but man, was it a letdown. You might say I judged it based on first impressions, but IMO getting a quarter into a show isn't first impressions anymore.

The animation and art were pretty good though.

Berserk.

TERRIBLE animation and background art, chopped-down story with lots of things left unexplained, yet with added inconsequential bits, weak soundtrack and a legendarily abrupt ending. Just read the manga. The animation is so bare-bones it hardly makes a difference anyway.

Yeah, I actually avoided the manga for the longest time, because the anime was so resoundingly 'meh'. Everything was so freaking brown, it's like they drew the animation on cardboard. And to then at the end say 'just read the manga, bye'... You might as well have said that right at the beginning of the show, would've saved me a lot of trouble.

And yet... the new movies are even worse.
