Gantz - I read the manga for a while, hated almost all of it but kept giving it the benefit of the doubt as I'd heard good things. I gave up after the level of gore-porn was taken to another level with that whole gunman massacre thing.
Oh man, tell me about it. I haven't watched the anime, but I've read the whole manga, and man is it trash. I guess it's enjoyable on a purely visceral level in small doses due to the levels of absurdity it reaches, but it has massively fatal flaws. It's the worst kind of trash that thinks it's making some kind of huge statement about the human condition, love, power and all that shit when it's just a god-stupid, incredibly shallow, tit-filled, mean-spirited, absurdly gory schlock-fest that at one point towards the end pulls an almost literal "Deus ex machina". I'm not even kidding! And the ending just screams of the author going "Please, just let it end, I'm so tired, please!!"

Do yourself a favor and stay away from any Lupin III animes! At all cost.

Kidding! Of course.

An honest stay away would be Kurozuka as it draws you in with a really cool setup and gets you all excited for the first few episodes that you have finally found another series that might actually be worth watching. Which does not happen very often. To me. And then springs upon an unsuspecting you a generic post apocalyptic bullshit scenario. Avoid.

Ever heard of "opinion"?

OT: Fate/Stay Night. It wasn't distilled shit, but the sheer mediocrity of it, especially to someone who's played the visual novel, turn me off about 3 episodes in.

High School of the Dead though is defiantly the worst I have ever seen. Started out really good, and then BAM, shot itself with absurd fan-service and sexual-exploitation type scenes.
Now I don't mind fan service that much, but High School of the Dead was just took things too far. The story also wasn't that interesting and basically offered no reason why I should watch another episode. Which I then didn't.

OT: If it wasn't for the brilliant ending I would have said School Days. I seriously hated the main character.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo bored me from beginning to end. I hated it and I couldn't get into it. It's been some years though... maybe I should check it out...

Trigun.

The thing is, I rather like Trigun. There's a lot of good things to be said about it. I always enjoy a nonsensical "future wild west" setting, I like the none too subtle subversion of Western genre tropes, and I love the designs of the characters.

The pacing is complete garbage however and if you're not an easy mark for the setting (like me) I can't say I'd reccommend it. Trigun spends roughly 12 of the 25 episode run just faffing about with various "monster of the week" shenanigans without making any attempt at framing the larger narrative. Once the Gung-Ho Guns are introduced it becomes another "monster of the week" affair as they're picked off one at a time with little to no explanation as to why they have such a mad-on for hunting down Vash.

When all is said and done there's only one episode that really gives any context to the revealed antagonist and it's done entirely through flashbacks. By the the end of the series there's no real motivation for his actions beyond him just being kind of a douchenozzle.

Those two...individuals...who recommended watching Team Four Star's Dragonball Z Abridged as opposed to the actual Dragonball Z anime are classy people who I in no way disagree with whatsoever. Funny enough how at the beginning of every DBZA episode they go out and tell you quite directly to please support the official release.

You're free to believe whatever you want to believe, it's cool.

OT: I didn't really enjoy One Piece when I watched it here and there on Toonami all those years ago. Then again I'm not the biggest watcher of anime, so you should probably take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Actually, make that a 4 lb bag of it.

Highschool of the Dead has very few redeeming features. I kind of liked the art style, and Saeko Busujima was cool, if only because she has long purple hair and wields a Katana.

Beyond that is is just fan service, idiotic fan service, disturbing fan service, terrible plot, fan service, un-likeable characters, fan service and a terrible conclusion to the series.

I felt duped after watching it, mostly because the Amazon reviews kept saying things like "If you can get past the fan service it's a really great anime with a brilliant story".

Plus I absolutely despise anime where the main character is a complete un-likeable bastard, yet has a whole bunch of girls fawning over him. It's insulting to both sexes, when it is made out to be a good thing. For once I want them to be called out on their behaviour.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. Evan-freaking-gelion.

The second season was good...ish. End of Evangelion was absolutely glorious, because it was Anno's two hour long "No, fuck YOU" to all the fanboys who wanted more action and sex in Evangelion while totally missing the point. But holy Christ, there are so many things that the show could have done better.

Shinji Ikari is the biggest problem with the series, being not only kind of boring, but also a whiny little shit who only becomes bearable when he goes berserk or actually DOES things rather than getting led around by the nose. Yes, I know his subservience and his unwillingness to stand up for himself are central tenants of his character, but it really does not make for an interesting character. The Death Korps of Krieg from Warhammer 40K are incredibly interesting because their subservience and dependency on their commanders drive them to be martyrs and soldiers, rather than ***** when told to kill an obviously dangerous and inhuman foe. Shinji really comes into his own in End of Evangelion when he actually turns out to be a pathetic, weak-willed failure, and when he starts to acknowledge that and actually act in an introspective manner. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, he does not do that, and he is SO FREAKING DULL because of it.

"But wait!" I hear the fans cry, "My waifu, Rei/Asuka, they're the best part of the series! How could you say such things about it when they grace the show with their glorious presence?" And allow me to answer in the language of 4chan: You're waifu a shit.

While Rei is one of the most sympathetic characters in anime history, Asuka isn't. She's a *****. There really isn't much to dissect here, she's a traumatized teenager like EVERY other pilot, but at the same time, I can't care. She's rude, disrespectful, and overly competitive in a way that reminds me of all the jock assholes from high school. Once again, the only time she ever came into her own was during End of Evangelion while fighting the Eva Series, because of reasons I won't spoil here.

In addition, the series makes a number of big mistakes by focusing on the wrong characters and the wrong themes.

- Gendo Ikari, the sociopathic director of NERV HQ is the most legitimately interesting character in the series, because he not only gets things done, but also because he's the only one who seemed to get any good dialogue written for him. Of course, his desire to save humanity and get his dead wife back is looked upon with scorn by the rest of the cast, and the series takes time to wag it's finger at him constantly.

- Shinji is of course the focus of the show when the real focus should have been on Unit 01. I'm serious. A tortured alien soul residing within a hideous cybernetic chimera, pressed into a battle against it's own kind, lobotomized and mind-raped by the humans it hates and has been bred to hate, watching behind its own eyes until those moments when it manages to break free and lash out at the cruel world that has abandoned it. Screaming at the pilot who routinely hijacks its mind, yet struggling with the sense of attachment that it begins to feel with them. Tell me that wouldn't be a great main character.

- Season one focuses too much on the giant robot fights and sillier things about the universe rather than the good bits. No focus is placed upon the Angels; I'd think that you might want to explain a little concerning more genocidal race of aliens that are all armed with personal "control physics" fields and such varied bodies and methods of attack, but no. Season two fixes this to an extent, focusing on the Evas and their nature as half-controlled monsters caged within their armor and piloted by traumatized teens, with several of the questions related to the Angels being answered.

And finally, the fans. Holy Christ the fans of Evangelion are the worst fans I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with. They go on and on about "Deep psychological themes" and "well-defined and nuanced characters" and how wonderful their waifu is, but they don't seem to grasp the complexities. They shrug off the biggest issues with the series as "petty complaints" and argue that it's super-deep and should always be regarded as serious business, lashing out at anyone who dares to make fun of one of the many sillier aspects of their series (including the great shitstorm conjured by those Critical Miss comics). The majority of Evangelion fans are driven by nostalgia, refusing to see the flaws inherent in their favorite series, arguing that their series is great because they came across it when they could easily relate to Shinji Ikari, not realizing that to any well-adjusted member of society, being compared to Shinji is a really elaborate insult.

Glad to finally get that out of my system. If you read this far, congrats.

Elfenlied.

Would you believe me if I told you it wasn't the gratuitous violence and nudity that lead me to dislike it? That actually made it salvageable in my opinion and compelled me to make my own take on the anime. No, what brought Elfenlied down for me was the characters. They weren't believable, none of their actions to me seemed realistic or what someone in that situation would actually do. The behaviour of Kouta and Yuka in particular was so surreal to me; I just couldn't invest myself in their fantasy world.

Doesn't matter much though, it's still enjoyable just in a different way.
This. In an ironic sense, if it wasn't for this Anime I probably wouldn't be here today. That said, I was 16 then. I'm 23 now and, well...it has precisely two elements - gore and constant whining. Someone pass me a shotgun, I'll go put myself out of my own misery right now.

Also on this note, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Especially the "reboot(s)". Uuuuuugh...

...Come to think of it, most Mecha Anime I've seen I could put here. RahXephon for example set a record for fastest anime backtracking with the first sentance ever spoken being overly pretentious. Gundam Wing goes on for too long and becomes a real slog to sit though (on that note for the same reason, might as well throw Full Metal Alchemist on this fire as well). Gurren Lagan is grossly overrated. Come to think of it, I think the only Mecha Anime I saw (and liked) has been G Gundam for some reason.

Anyways, I think I set enough Sacred Cows on fire here to cook a small barbeque. Someone else can have a turn now X3

Well, I have a few.
Firstly, Squid Girl. I would never recommend Squid Girl to anyone, because frankly, If you want to watch a funny show about an incompetent invader of earth, Zim has you covered. But even if you want it to be an anime, Sgt. Frog is a much better choice.

Next, Rosario+Vampire. My favorite harem series, but save yourself the trouble and read he manga instead. One of the worst adaptions ever if you ask me.

Don't watch Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor if you like seeing good things happen to the protagonist. On the other hand, it is amazing. so go watch it anyways, and be prepared for MANLY TEARS!

DanganRonpa: the animation skips a lot of fluff and character building thats in the game, so you might not connect with the characters as much if the anime is your first step into this greatness

well, thats all I got. Here, I'll throw in a recommendation too. Everyone should go watch My Teenage Romantic SNAFU. ignore how stupid the title is, It's surprisingly good.

Fate/Zero. Yes, I said it.

Granted, I only saw the first 6 episodes, but I think that's giving it more than a fair chance to entertain me. It didn't do so once. Extremely confusing setting, characters you don't care about with motivations that feel barely explained, the first episode being essentially 50 minutes of all exposition and a base concept that feels better suited for a video game. I was really hyped when I first started watching it, but man, was it a letdown. You might say I judged it based on first impressions, but IMO getting a quarter into a show isn't first impressions anymore.

The animation and art were pretty good though.

Berserk.

TERRIBLE animation and background art, chopped-down story with lots of things left unexplained, yet with added inconsequential bits, weak soundtrack and a legendarily abrupt ending. Just read the manga. The animation is so bare-bones it hardly makes a difference anyway.
Trust me you didn't miss anything. The only redeeming factor of that show is Iskandar(aka Alexander the Great). He just owns every scene he is in. The ending is so bogus and convuluted I could figure out what was happening. That because it is a fucking prequel but can't function as a standalone story. Also I've been told that the series is based of some henti games, so yeah theres that. Also the identity of the beserker is so obvious its almost sad.

I will disagree with the beserk animation because it gave us this wonderful dub.

Bleach.
Haven't read the entire thread, so it might have been mentioned already, but god damn. The author even admitted that he writes himself into corners and whenever that happens, he just invents a new overpowered character to break out of it. And you notice it. It's not quite as bad in the manga, although the anime had some stuff I liked as well - the first few story arcs are nice and it genuinely made me MISS a character the other characters were missing, too, so that worked out. But it gets so unbelievably dumb and falls for that typical anime bullshit where every fight takes three episodes and people never use their abilities until the last moment and SO MUCH ANGST.

It really just hurts that much because it HAD a nice premise and it HAD good characters, it just chooses to not explore those at all and abandon the status-quo-premise in favour of ever new overpowered stuff.

Captcha: reach higher. indeed, reach higher, you can do better than Bleach! :p

EDIT: Reading more of the other posts here, what is so wrong with "filler"? Why are people so obsessed with categorizing episodes into filler and non-filler? I never quite understood the criteria for filler, and I am okay with it (unless it becomes way too much).

I think I've only seen two animes to the end that I really disliked.

Minami-ke: I'm someone who loves stupid slice of life shows. This was just utter garbage. I didn't like the characters, I didn't find it funny, I didn't like it at all really.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san: It's an ecchi harem with no plot at all to back it up. The "lovecraftian monsters" are just moe girls with lovcraft monster names.

A runner up award goes to Shinryaku! Ika Musume (Squid Girl).
I'd say it was largely un-noteworthy; but I liked Ika Musume as a character and it had some fun moments. Unfortunately, the supporting cast/characters surrounding here were unlikeable and just bad really.

At least the OP was catchy.

Excel Saga: Oh, god. I will never get those brain cells back. Hands-down the worst anime I have ever seen.

Bleach: SPOILER ALERT! Ichigo gets the same type of powers as his enemy and beats them with a Getsuga Tenshou. It's just so damn lazy.

Freezing: Read the manga. It's better.

Zetman: Read the manga. The anime is total shit.

Elfen Lied. Its worst flaw isn't the nudity, the pointless cruelty, the violence or any of that.

It is that it is boring. It is one of the most boring pieces of crap I have ever watched, with stale, unrealistic characters, a plot trying to be so "adult" it raps itself right around to being juvenile again, and really nothing to redeem it.
