Personally I feel like the hands-on violence (hand to hand stuff) has been ramped up higher than I would want in a reboot of DOOM- I find that in trying to maintain what little of a horror vibe is left in modern FPSs, the feeling is easily ditched if you can tear actual monsters apart like soft cheese.

I'm not saying that DOOM was necessarily meant to be a horror FPS or anything, just commenting on the effect of making threats seem terrifying, and the ways some (exaggerated or enhanced) action/heroics can subvert that vibe. For the record, I remember using the chainsaw in the original, and the rage kit to punch monsters into chum, for example. I didn't much like that either, but I totally recognize it as canon in DOOM.

But the game does look great.

Oh HEY Friday the 13th release date. Sounds like as good a day as any to get this and Uncharted. My poor poor wallet.

Arch-viles are back, I see. Probably the only videogame monsters that are scarier than Sinistar...

It looks like the trailer gameplay has been sped up significantly. Every single multiplayer video I've seen is slow as molasses, as in you can see that it's half the speed of old-school tournament shooters.
I've not noticed an overwhelming agreement on this though, more like you'll occasionally see a comment on it, so I'm wondering if this is an effect of that criticism or if the gameplay is actually a lot quicker than the videos I've seen, or maybe just in single-player.

Anyway, if it's not fast paced, I have no interest. Nostalgia will not get me to buy it at least.
Early gameplay video's (atleast those from a few months or so ago) were significantly slower than the actual pace will be.
Which to be honest shouldn't be done, instead they should've shown the actual pace from the get go.

OT:
My purchase of Doom really depends on how Carmageddon: Max Damage will fare on the PS4, going to pre-order that but if the performance ends up being horse bollocks I'll be getting Doom. If the new Carmageddon does run fine Doom will have to wait for atleast another month.

Darn shame that the soundtrack what I've heared until this point doesn't really hit me as being awesome. Leaves me wanting to just put on Anaal Nathrakh or something on full volume instead.

Didn't have any fun with the multiplayer but I'm still anxious to see how the campaign is. That's really what I want from DOOM anyway.

Well the multiplayer was a bit disappointing, but the single player looks like a ton of fun! Hope its better than the multiplayer at least.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
The multi beta actually sold me on the game so now that I still don't see any weird bethesda online store thing like Uplay so Ill probably preorder it.

Felt slow in the beta too. That was my biggest complaint.

Same, and I pre-ordered the Special Editions for both.

Mm, I don't think so but it certainly sounds like him in some spots, doesn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if somebody steps in and proves me wrong.

Anyway.

"You've returned"
"The only flesh and blood to walk between dimensions."
"Between our world and theirs."

Huh, sounds like original Doom-guy to me, wonder if he's still upset about his bunny rabbit.

There's something about the monster design that seems a little off to me. They look a little cartoony. If that's what they were going for then mission accomplished. They're just not very "shit your pants scary".

the beta was a disaster that left a bad taste in my mouth. also, its slow that makes doom 3 like super sonic. im still not a 100% sure about it. i think i just wait and see how it turns out and watch some gameplay on youtube. otherwise i skip out on it and just wait a month until catalyst is out. now this is faster and, to me at least, way more exciting and brighter than console version doom.

Agree completely. Doom 3 definitely had faults, but i really liked the horror elements they injected into it, really made it feel like you're just one guy fighting against insurmountable odds. Now that you can literally tear apart monsters with your bare hands, it seems to lose that vibe.

I've played the Alpha and the Beta, and I can assure you the gameplay in the trailer wasn't sped up. It's about that fast.

Have you gone back and played the old Dooms recently? If not, I recommend you do, and be sure to do so on the harder difficulties. The thing you'll quickly notice is that, despite the player character's fast move speed, you won't be running around the maps at full speed all the time. Most of your play time will be moving slow, cautiously, to avoid running into any traps, tricky combat situations, or falling into pits.

That's one thing that's been bugging me about many of the complaints about this new Doom. Everyone's complaining about it being "too slow", reminiscing about how "fast" the old games were. And all I can wonder is, "Did we play the same games?"

Really? Didn't feel slow to me.

Granted, your character isn't running at 60mph like in Doom 1 and 2, but the overall gunplay is just as frantic. The only time the new game felt truly 'slow' to me was when I wasn't making full use of the 'verticality' of the levels.[footnote]I think I won the "Bunny Hopper" award in every match I played.[/footnote]

And I think that's the key. I noticed a lot of players simply not utilizing the full capabilities of the movement system. In fact I'd wager many rarely ever even touched the space bar.

Were they ever? Were they ever supposed to be? At what point in Doom's long history have the monster designs ever been anything but outlandish and silly?

I swear, it's like everyone's played some alternate universe version of Doom that's completely unlike the ones I grew up playing...

Hmm might pick it up eventually, but I hope those minimum requirements are exaggerated, because my processor is only a FX-6200.
