In relation to last weeks issue of the escapist, what are the differences between a geek, dork, or nerd?
I need to know so I can proudly proclaim my geeky nerdom to the world, or something. Oh, and which are you and why?

Geek- Someone who favors intelligence over popularity.

Nerd- Someone who is socially awkward and thus has very few, if any, friends.

Dork- Someone who is unpopular because they are deemed 'weird' by their peers.

(I think...)

Dork- silly, inept, not quite normal, out of touch with modern life, "out there."
Geek- Generally just someone with an obsession for one or more subjects or hobbies. Generally invests time and money into collecting materials related to subject/hobby and learning/doing as much with it/them as humanly possible.
Nerd- Generally just a ridiculously smart, intellectual individual who invests in cerebral and academic pursuits at the expense of just about everything else.

At the most general, that's how I'd break it down...

ed- ninja'd by about a million Venn diagrams.

That seems backwards to be honest.
I'm not saying nerds aren't often socially awkward, but the defining characteristic of a nerd is usually being ridiculously smart and somewhat obsessive.

Wikipedia isn't always the most reliable source, but...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerd

"Nerd is a term that refers to a person who avidly pursues intellectual activities, technical or scientific endeavors, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests, rather than engaging in more social or conventional activities. It often carries a derogatory connotation or stereotype. The nerd may be awkward, shy and unattractive.[1] Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers, or will tend to associate with like-minded people."

Just for my own personal curiosity,

Geek:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek

"The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "One who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc." "

"The definition of geek has changed considerably over time, and there is no longer a definitive meaning"

Well, that explains why I can't figure out what 'geek' really means.
And essentially, based on the first part, a geek and a nerd are the same thing.

All in all, both the definitions and associations of the two terms overlap to such an extent that you can't say anything much to meaningfully distinguish the two.

One thing suggests nerds are the smarter and more successful of the two, while another contradicts it and says geeks are better able to get things done.

Either way, in any practical sense they're clearly the same thing.

My own personal definitions.

Nerd: Someone who is incredibly interested in real world science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics). So while you might spend two or three hours playing video games they spend two or three hours studying string theory and enjoys it just as much if not more.

Geek: Someone whose interests are more in video games, movies, comics, books. That sort of thing. They can map out middle earth, speak techno babble fluently, and know the full background of every starwars character no matter how minute a role in the actual movies. Pretty much a nerd only they excel in fake things.

Dork: A whale penis.

According to this formula, I am a geeky dork. Yep, that sounds right!

There are clearly wildly differing definitions. We must first accept that there is clearly no universally accepted definition. Therefore, we must emphasize that this is a discussion of people's personal definitions.

To me, a nerd is someone who...well...

"Nerd is a term that refers to a person who avidly pursues intellectual activities, technical or scientific endeavors, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests, rather than engaging in more social or conventional activities." --taken from CrystalShadow's post, who took it from Wikipedia.

That pretty much sums up my definition; in my case, I'm mostly a videogame nerd. As for "geek", I've never really used the word but I'd probably use it as a synonym for "nerd". And "dork", I'm pretty sure is exclusively an insult, although I could be wrong.

Edit: I would add that a nerd (my personal definition, of course) is a person who isn't afraid to be REALLY into something, regardless of whether it is popular or not, and can actually be very social if surrounded by fellow nerds. An example: people who can hold an animated discussion, for hours, about the Legend of Zelda timeline, simply because it fascinates them.

Am I an outlier? I consider myself a nerd because I like computer games, and know quite a bit about the ones I can really get into (like when I played WoW, and also things like the transformers universe compared to how some people are right into the star wars universe) but i'm not particularly intelligent. I'm not socially inept, either, and I have plenty of friends with whom I do plenty of non-nerd stuff with as well as nerd stuff.

Geeks I contribute to being really smart, as well as being very thorough in their knowledge of a particular area. Dorks i've never thought about or given much consideration, and consider it to be a group completely seperate from geeks and nerds.

Pretty much this. I always see nerds as those keeners that can't do anything other than school. I feel nerds waste their lives by studying so damn much. If I can get through school with good grades and not studying, why is the guy who studies 24/7 and gets slightly better grades the one that is heralded as some sort of intellectual messiah?

Geeks are the people interested in geeky things. Like fantasy, video games, programming, star wars.. Yeah. What you said, Kagim. Geek to me also screams deadly hygiene and annoyingly in-your-face, better than thou personality.

Dorks are those weird kids that aren't smart, aren't stoners, but don't talk to people much either. They're smelly, look weird, and are usually in band. They tend to group together and have dorkathons in the band room, laughing in extremely nasally voices.

I guess I'm geek, except I'm not one of the dirty ones or the one that wears gigantic glasses to proclaim his geekdom over everyone else. That pisses me off. Even moreso if they're not actually geeks to begin with and just trying to make a fashion statement. If you did that with goths, you'd probably get stabbed.

I've been playfully called a dork by various girls I've dated, so maybe that, but I'm introverted, not completely socially inept.

I'll pass on all those labels and stick with "badass", thanks.

Yay! A fellow introvert!
Good advice. I favor BAMF for myself.

If meeting a fellow introvert makes you squee like that, you'll hardly be able to contain yourself if you hang around this forum long enough.
