I'm fairly new to DotA 2, and i wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions for a good character to start out with for a noobie. thanks

Lich. It's very hard to do wrong with Lich.
Harass the enemy with his Frost Blast.
Put Ice Armor on your allies.
Deny creeps and never run out of mana with Sacrifice.
Use his ult when the enemies are clumped together.
Buy a courier and wards since Lich is a support hero. If there are stealth heroes on the other team, get sentry wards and dust or a gem if you ever manage to have 700 gold.

Yeah go for Lich, I learned the game mechanics with Lich.
Death Prophet also got me into the game very well because she becomes so tanky.

Also you'll need a thick skin, MOBA communities are about as welcoming as a recently thrown brick.
Depends. Are you new to DOTA2 or are you new to the whole MOBA genre? If you're new to DOTA2, just play anything and you'll pick it fast. If you're new to the entire genre, then Lich, Skeleton King and in general supports and heroes with fewer active skills. Stay away from carries.
In DotA, Troll Warlord was a fucking boss. Idk if he has an equivalent in DotA2 but if he does, I would suggest to play as him.
So yeah like the guy up said if u are new to dota 2 play anything u pick first u may like it and even own with it (happened to me)... I was playing Zeus all the time maybe cause i liked him and a litle bit learned of playing than i found a match called single draft and u can choose from 3 different heroes there was clinkz outworld destroyer and dragon knight i chose clinkz and made a score 13-1 with it :3 So go crazy!
