Pretty much what I was thinking. It seems like maybe they are using their reputation as much as possible prior to actually releasing anything, just in case well what they release sucks.

I would be more hopeful if they wouldd have named Crusader Kings in the pitch, instead of Game of Thrones.

Maybe they are just fishing for the more advertiseable title, and it's actually still modeled after CK. I sure hope so, that game was ridiculously good at recreating the whole Game of Thrones atmosphere.

Nope.

Remember, inXile ran the MOST successful game-concept Kickstarter (Torment: Tides of Numenera) mere months after getting Wasteland 2 funded.

This is because they had finished entire chunks of Wasteland (like the engine and story aspects) and now had workers sitting around with thumbs up their butts. Since they don't have spillover profits from the first game yet (what with it not being even close to done), they had to run a second Kickstarter to get the idle workers working again. They'll probably do a third one before Wasteland 2 even gets to QA.

The kickstarter page explains that the first game is only using a third of their staff, and that they want to have all their teams working on projects for the players.

I have complete faith in Double Fine, and if they decide to only make games through kickstarter from now on, I'll be fine with that.

hell, $20 (£14) to a company you trust, to get a copy of a game theyve made exactly how they wanted... its wins all round :)

Sounds cool, I hope they have little nods to their other games in it, a strategy game can do a lot with stuff like that.

I love Crusader Kings II and I damn well want to see more personality and control over my heroes.

This is the type of game I want to see made more often - grand strategy with dynasties.

BRB, kickstarting.

There's currently a Crusader Kings II: Game of Thrones mod that is in that strange alpha-beta status. I just reinstalled CKII in hopes of giving it a go.

Time to get crusty (as it seems to fit).

Tried to get me, but I won't be got,
Say I'm a misfit but I say I'm not,
I never set out to profit from another,
Those smarmy bastards would steal from their mother.
They've got the lot, that's what they want you to think,
Read between the lines, you'll see the missing link.
They plundered and slaughtered in the name of truth,
Acceptance of normality is what they want from you as proof,
They think they've got the answers, but there's something that they miss,
Their cup which overfloweth, is JUST FULL UP OF PISS.

... Yeah, no. I didn't back the Double Fine Adventure because I was not going to throw money at a vague promise of a point & click (honestly, the game had no title, no concept art, no plot outline, NOTHING when they went to Kickstarter). And now they are struggling to finish Broken Age despite having gained 800% of what they asked for. (My guess is a lot of the money actually went into their Amnesia Fortnight games that they are also developing right now)

They also recently launched a Humble Bundle to try and get more funding for Broken Age. What guarantee is there that they won't run into financial trouble again this time? And what guarantee is there that they aren't going to use this Kickstarter's money to finish Broken Age and hope it sells enough to fund development for Massive Chalice?

Sorry, this'd mean they'd have four games in development simultaneously, for an indie dev that's an enormous amount.

I'd first like to see if they can even finish a single Kickstarted game before even considering backing a second one.

Tell me when they plan on making Iron Brigade 2 and I'll be more inclined to donate money to them.

That's the most annoying part of all this. Got significantly more money from their first kickstarter then they were asking for, and now they are pandering for more cash to finish said kickstarted game, all while trying to crowd source yet another game with nearly any solid assets. Pardon the term, but these guys are whoring their name out.

Double Fine's great, blah blah blah, stop throwing your money away because you liked a few games a company made.

This is no different than being paid to mow a lawn up front. It just really saps your motivation to even finish the job.

Its almost like your asking to be banned...

OT: Looks interesting though I probably wont back, not really my type of game and I lack the money right now.

I'm not sold yet. It's the same reason why I didn't back King Art's pretty project: it's a different sport.

The biggest point against the project is that DF don't have any experience with turn-based 4X strategy and only minimal footnotes in RPGs (Costume Quest).

Balancing strategy and inventing solid RPG mechanics is hard. Most new games fail.

You can have a universe of imagination and all the humor in the world and while that will suffice for a great puzzle-adventure game, it's no substitute for game theory, experience with AI programming and alot of hard math.

In this genre Double Fine are as much unproven newbies as the devs of Banner Saga, but the BS kickstarter had alot to show from day 1. Chalice seems little more than a premise at this point.

My thoughts exactly. A company known for making quirky adventure games is asking for money to make a strategy RPG? It could work, but it's certainly not the sort of thing I'd put money up front for, especially given how little they actually have to show at this point.
