I just don't want them to make a big deal of it. No 'womens issues' episodes, no gender casting. Just that they found a really good actor who happened to be an actress.

Although my still not dead inner teenager also thinks it'd be pretty hot.
Not as hot as David Tennant though

Sure, I guess. That is if it isn't done solely to avoid accusations of 'sexism', that they don't make a huge deal out of it and that it doesn't ruin the Doctor's character.

If any of those happen I will rage and rage hard.

Probably not. I don't even like a lot of the male doctors (I certainly don't like the current one, matt smith or whatever), so the combination of writing and female actor that would be required for me to enjoy it, frankly, just doesn't seem present in TV right now. That said, there's a chance. Maybe it would all just click for me and she'd be my favorite doctor ever.

I never understand why the doctor is invariably a white human male. Or why out of everywhere in the universe his favourite places seem to be London and Cardiff. I mean I know the BBC has budget constraints but COME ON.

Then again half the plot of Doctor Who is just 'because space-magic!' so I guess you have to suspend your disbelief.

Yes. It'd be interesting since its never happened before. It's possible within the show's mythology though.

I'd like to see it, I guess. But it'd have to be done well, it'd depend on the writers and how they designed her.

No, I probably would not watch it. As an FtM, I just KNOW the handling of gender issues would be too badly botched for me to bear. The thought of any writer on modern shows trying to write a character that's always been male transforming to a female makes me feel more than a bit ill.

Well if they kept the same personality just with tits and long hair it'd still be pretty good...

Of course that wouldn't make me start watching it now that I've given up all hope of being able to untangle that fucking mess of a plot after missing half a year of it....

No, just because the writers already go overboard with the female companions fawning over the doctor, I really don't want to see the male companion version doing that. Also I really think they would mishandle the sexuality (see how terrible River Song is).

And yet, people seem to like River Song. I hate that woman. So bad.

That could actually make for an interesting episode since women were second-rate for quite a while in history. An episode where nobody cares about the Doctor or her warnings until its too late. Then again, that happens a lot.

As for me, don't care. As long as its not shoved in our face. "LOOK! A FEMALE DOCTOR!!!"

In the context of regeneration, though, the transformation would be apolitical. It's been stated that the Doctor can look like anything as long as he's/she's humanoid, so it wouldn't be calling out to LGBT sensibilities. The bigger problem would be the handling of a female character, something that writers haven't seemed to nail down despite decades upon decades of attempts.

I would stop watching.

But as to getting into Doctor Who, the upcoming Christmas special looks like a very good jumping on point, so I would recommend watching that.

Otherwise I would recommend series 1 with Christopher Eccleston. That was when a lot of people started watching, including myself, and it requires no prior knowledge if the show to get into.

Well, I started watching series 5 with minimal knowledge of the series, and that worked out just fine.

Would I still watch Doctor Who if the Doctor was a chick?

Definitely! It'd be interesting to see.

That said, I do think it'd be difficult for the Doctor to be a Person of Colour or a woman, no matter how much I'd like to see it happen. Louis CK made an interesting point about it, starting at 0:45.

Basically, if the Doctor is anything but a white cis-gendered man, he'll encounter prejudice whenever he travels back in time. I mean, it's one thing to have a young girl wandering around with a man, but to have one on their own...well, it'd just be a lot more hassle and force the show to handle social issues it isn't fit to deal with, what with being a family orientated thing.

Absolutely.

Still waiting for a Ginger Doctor, though. I'm looking at you Rupert Grint. (More HP and DW crossover goodness?)

Why do they have to turn every character female or black? They want to make Dr.Who a woman and James Bond black, can't they make new characters for women/minorities, but have to go after established white protagonists(although for the doctor it kind-of makes sense)?

As long as it's handled well by the writers, I don't see why not.
I guess the main reason I like the show is just experiencing The Doctor's shenanigans in Time and Space, and all the character interaction that comes with it. Doctor Who's best moments as a TV show is often based on the characters, and their interaction with the wast universe the show has created (though apparently not so wast there can't be a Dalek or a Cyberman around the next corner). So as long as the female Doctor's personality is well written, interesting and well enough portrayed, I'll be watching the show. (Though I would probably still watch if it was horrible.)

In the end, sex doesn't matter, I'm here for The Doctor, be it Matt Smith, David Tennant, a ginger or a female.

As a heterosexual male:
Nothing is as hot as David Tennant.

I would definitely still watch it. If they can find a woman that still fits into the Doctor's personality then it would all work out just fine.
