Dr Who, has levels. On the first level the show particularly the early ones were almost a parody of the sci-fi genre they were just wacky fun but on the second level Dr Who contains an epically deep story that is constantly evolving and emotionally engaging.

The problem with Doctor Who is the over use of classic monsters, which takes away how threatening they are supposed to be. Besides, anyone watching Doctor Who for a serious Sci-Fi is an idiot. The show is aimed at kids (action figure toy line, etc) and has some seriously campy characters.

Its good British television, just not good Sci-Fi.

The Master's return this Christmas should be fun at least.

It can flick between light hearted fun and scary proper sci-fi as is usually the case when Cybermen or demons show up. You might want to look into Torchwood which is a more Adult orientated Spin-off of Dr. Who, more grown up, dark and dramatic.
Oh, Torchwood is horrible. I only got through about 3eps b4 I had enough

Watch some of the great ones. Make up your own mind. (I made up mine long ago) and until then:

Would you like a jelly baby?
Thanks for the thorough explanation.
Ill take your suggestions in mind, will try to find Doctor Who and the Daleks and give it a look.

... and thanks for the Jelly Baby.

For me, the appeal of Dr. Who (the new one) is that it really embraces cheesy, retro sci fi in terms of story and oftentimes design and mixes all that often with really thoughtful and unique storys. And if it doesn't, there is still the next episode that might be completely different (that includes two-parters, for better or worse).

Also the Doctor is awesome.

Dr. Who isn't too bad, I guess. I think it's a lot worse than the old stuff.

Torchwood is a blight on the face of the planet, however.

I'm not into it personally, but a friend of mine is. He refers to Dr. Who as "an acquired taste."

I guffawed.

Also, it guest stars SATAN.

It's just really, really fun, is all I can say. If you do get into it, you'll want to buy a sonic screwdriver off BBCShop.

If you dont like tennant (I.e you have no soul, He's my fave Dr) Wait till the new series - Russel T Davis is Buggering off, Meaning there shouldn't be so much running (that he seems to love so much ¬¬ )

I liked david tennant so much, and im sad he;s going, but honestly, i think the 9th doctor was much better.

also "dont blink" versus the empty child. which episode can beat up which? I mean this literally: if the two episodes were people, which one wins ion a fight?

I've noticed a lot of people don't like Torchwood. I have to ask why, the characters are all reasonable, none of them have a "Who the hell would say that in that way after that happened?" line. The sci fi is weak in parts. (Why is Jack immortal again? some TARDIS energy nonsense?) And the completely moronic "What? There are aliens?" public. You've seen events of a massive freaking scale and you didn't notice the aliens? But Torchwood is still a good series all things considered. You actually care if someone dies you know?

Any WAY, Doctor Who isn't supposed to be taken as seriously as Star Trek sometimes is, and not even CLOSE to as serious as the new Battlestar Galactica. But it's entertaining, not because of romance, not because of over the top visuals, not because of hardcore fast action.
I like it because of the absurdity of it all.

It's amazing how the episode with the lowest-tech and budget is still one of the creepiest and coolest of them.
