I can't remember what season or episode but you want to start with the first David Tennant episode. Its a christmas special so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Honestly, anywhere I think. I grew up watching Dr Who (Aussie here, it was always on at about 5:30 in the afternoon on ABC I think ... right before Roger Ramjet/Danger Mouse/Goodies/Monkey Magic back in the 80s).

The only problem is that by watching the old seasons you are going to be mortified by the 'not-so' special effects. Maybe we should call them 'speshul effukts', actually. Just suspend your disbelief and it's great. It's a little like the old Kamen Rider shows from Japan from the 70s -- so goddamn cheesy and clearly fake that it's entertainingly silly.

I'd start with the first season of the "New" Doctor Who, with the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston). That's where I started.

Let's Kill Hitler is actually one of the worst episodes this series IMHO. I hate Riversong so much. The current guy is the eleventh doctor, so if you just want to do him, find the first episode of the eleventh doctor. A lot of people really like Tennant, though, so you might want to start with him.

i would suggest starting from the beginning of the new series (that would be the ones produced after 2000) just so you know who some of the recurring characters are. also the newest seasons seem to be having more of a continueous story than usual so try to watch it in order.

other than that, its a good series and its nice to know about new fans.

Edit: Oh, and if you want to go overboard, try finding the old series too.

that would be an interesting feat to find and watch ALL of Doctor who, from beginning to present.

Obviously the best place to start would be at the beginning, but since most of the original Doctor Who episodes are lost to time, start at the beginning of the remade series, in 2000 with Christopher Eccleston.

Start at the beginning of 'modern' doctor who (i.e. when Christopher Ecclestone started) and work your way through.

I'd recommend for you to watch all the seasons of the current 'revived' series. You'd also probably like Torchwood too, although the newest series is absolutely terrible. After that, If you're interest in the classic series there are some essential stories that you can check out.

Also, while it isn't fantastic the 1996 US made TV movie is fairly decent and is the only live action appearance of Paul McGaan's 8th Doctor.

The third and fourth doctors get quite a lot of love despite the old series having its ... cheesy awfulness. Peter Cushing (Tarkin from Star Wars) also played the Doctor in one of the Dr Who movies, but I recommend you don't go anywhere near those with a ten foot barge pole.

I concur. Start at the beginning of Eccleston's series and work your way through the new stuff. The older stuff is much harder-going. (I watched the very first three episodes of the original first season and the dialogue is terrible, the acting's way off and some of the walls inside the TARDIS are painted onto curtains.)

There's a few good starting points. Of course with 108 episodes missing, mostly at the beginning, it is impossible to go and watch everything. The easiest place to start is with the 9th Doctor and the recent reboot of the series, first episode called "Rose." It introduces all of the Doctor Who elements, no knowledge of past Doctors won't make you lost, and all the episodes are easy to find.

Who is this Dr Who? I only know of Doctor Who. But yeah as others have said starting back in 2005 with Rose is a pretty good spot.

I started (this summer) with the reboot of Doctor Who started by Richard T Davies with an episode called "Rose." When I go back and watch the reruns that bit seems a bit slow, but it definitely gives you a full scope of the mythos of the Doctor Who world. You'll get the whole regeneration thing, the companion thing, the tortured/dark side of the Doctor, etc. It's a lot to watch, but if you have Netflix you can pretty much watch everything up to the current season.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE SHOW.

I am also hooked on Torchwood now, as a result. If you have any plans of checking into Torchwood at any point, then I highly recommend going back to that start just to get a feel for Richard T Davies' style as well. Moffat is brilliant, but so is Davies.

ENJOY!!!

For my fellow Whovians that saw this week's episode, I have a question for you: http://www.riverarunsthroughit.com/2011/09/open-question-to-fellow-whovians-god.html

It's Russell T. Davies, by the way.

I agree that Rose is a great place to start. It's where I started. I highly recommend starting there.

I'm a bit of an optimist, so I'd say he is finally learning. Remember his reaction with the TARDIS interface in "Let's Kill Hitler." As for what he saw...my guess is the same as yours. After all, he is the person he hates the most (see: "Amy's Choice"). Maybe he is the person he fears the most.

As for the topic at hand, I'd recommend starting with Rose, the very first reboot episode. That's where I started, and I regret nothing.

im quite inclined to agree here, as it teaches so much about the rest of the universe and introduecs some of the more regular characters and spin-offs

I think that you are forgetting that the masters 1234 tapping was playing in the back round when he opened the door. Unless I am crazy and imagining things. Also if I was mistaken then the thing that might have struck fear in his heart was seeing Donna Noble again.

Season 3, episode 10, the title is 'Blink'. Good stuff.
Blink is an episode that I think you can see out of sequence (and it is an AMAZING episode), but I'd still recommend going back to "Rose" at some point.
