However, it would be nice if the characters in the game were either bi straight or gay. Everyone being bisexual is just lazy writing more than anything else.

I am sick to death of ignorant morons like this guy.

Gaider didn't dress him down enough.

someone get that webcomic where the male Hawke is talking to the elf-guy, and says to himself "Okay, just let him down easy, don't want any rivalry points here" and then the next frame they're in bed, with him puzzled as to why.

What's he complaining about?

Gay gamers get emo JRPG douchebag Fenris and whiney, insufferable Anders - straight dudes get cute, nerdy Merril and slutty Isabella with her ridiculous tits.

Seems like the straight males/lesbian females got the better deal here.
You could hate Fenris for his ridiculous anti-mage stance, but he has a fantastic voice (Gideon Emery).

Whenever he speaks I think about fighting Russian space robots.

To be quite honest I think everyone but women got screwed over in the appeal department. All the girls I know who have played DA2 loved the characters they romanced (usually Anders or Fenris) where most guys who played the game (that I know), myself included, felt the female romance options were either boring/shallow (Isabella) or cliched (Merrill = Liara/Liana/Mission/etc.). I'm not saying any one group got special treatment, I just feel like the developers either did a better job writing the male romancable characters, or (and this is quite ironic) they just had a better sense of how to tickle the female gamer's fancy.

For the record my first playthrough was a female Hawke and Merrill, which actually had a great arch to it... unfortunately Merrill is just fucking boring :(
Wow. We have literally the opposite opinion on this matter.

Merill is fucking hardcore. She isn't at all like Liara or Leliana (most people compare her to Tali, but I'm not entirely sure why), and most of her dialogue is either charming, funny or heartbreaking. Her companion subplot was also the most interesting.

That may be true but the characters can have their own sexual orientations.
Anders never struck me as the Bisexual type.

But this is probably a response to the Tali and Jack outrage from Mass Effect 2.

Please tell me this isn't weird.
When I read the title, I envisioned a tall oscilating fan sitting in a chair holding one of those WBC "God hates fags" signs, and there was a man jumping out of his computer screen with a shotgun, moments away from shooting him in the face.

How dare Bioware accept homosexuality?
As a straight male, I demand Garrett Hawke to be swimming in poon-tang, not occassionally flirted with by other men! tsk.
I know right!

As crazy as it sounds; as a straight, white, male gamer I can play up to 2 hours of a game now a days without having a pandering cleavage shot or suggestive position shown to me in a game. How the industry has fallen.

I love seeing Bioware take a stance to defend what it has made, and I think more companies should take hard stances on their properties.

While I support what the lead writer is saying, it still doesn't remove from the fact that if I turned down a potential same sex relationship I'd get a ton of rivalry points which doesn't make much sense.

I disagree. A lot of fans complained in Dragon Age that they had to play a certain gender to romance Morrigan or Alistair.

By making everyone available, regardless of Hawke's gender, you don't have fans who want to try a romance between their character and companion X being pigeon-holed into playing a certain gender.

For example, I play female characters. I don't like playing RPGs as male characters. Nothing wrong with them, just a personal preference. But to romance Morrigan, I'll have to do a playthrough with a male character. But I have no issues pursuing who I want in DA2.

Sounds like the people who complain (possibly) don't know what flirting is.
Keep in mind that to the average straight male gamer, gays existing=TEH GHEYZ R RUBBING IT IN R FACEZ! PANIX!

I wouldn't be surprised, particularly, if people were seeing "flirting" in the same way they see "rubbing it in our faces."

Speaking as a straight male gamer, I'd just like to say "Good on you" to that developer. I've got about as much sexual interest in the male body as I do a grape fruit, doesn't mean I can't accept that some people are interested in that and might enjoy having the option to explore that part of the story.

I had a friend come out as bisexual a few years ago, I swore I'd never pegged him for one either, people are more then their sexual preference.

Good on Gaider, but I have to say I had a little trouble with the flirtiness of characters in Bioware's games...

I really hated how my FemShep would constantly get flirty with Jacob even during normal conversations. For God's sake girl, that whiner doesn't deserve you!

And frankly, I'm glad with how Bioware's titles are getting increasingly less raunchy in the sexy side. The grope-y sex scenes just pass into the uncanny valley...

You have to wonder what he was thinking would happen after Gaider made himself very clear back in December:

It's kind of lazy, but at the same time there are only four characters you can romance, two of each gender. Because of some weird parallel universe-magic, this means two of them are straight.

I kind of wish they'd make a completely gay character for once, but this is still better than what every other company does (nothing).

It's too bad sexuality is just thrown in for the purposes of romances since they could (should?) have a large impact on how you view a character in the role playing aspect since it is an important trait.

I for one am offended that I could not romance Varric. And it's not because of my deep hidden homosexual desires...

No. It's because he was the only three dimensional character. IN THE WHOLE BLOODY GROUP
