My character from the first game and his/her love interest. And Hawke and his/her love interest.

Seriously, that's all I care about.

Well, given that the context for this involves making the worst possible choice in exchange for what is perhaps the least useful Prestige Class in the game, I'd say Leliana's Survival ought to be canonical. There were other at least marginally grey choices in the game where I could see the canon going either way, notably the outcome of the Redcliffe quest and the Desire Demon. There was an objectively good outcome possible but, if I'm not mistaken, it required the player be a Mage.
Then it should never have been an option if they wanted her in the next game. It's even more surprising they went the route they did given that she played such a small role in DAII.

Yet her survival is something I could head-canon away, after all she did die right next to the Urn of Sacred Ashes and who knows what power it may have.

What genuinely annoyed me was the attitude of a Bioware writer who basically said "tough crap if you want your choices to count. We decide what happens" Fair enough but don't give that choice in the first place if you are just going to ignore it further on.

As to the Redcliffe quest, you can send any Mage into the Fade. Personally I like sending the First Enchanter.

To be honest I wish that was the way they would treat it as well. I like the concept of carrying on a story, but it requires far much more variety in paths than they are willing to commit to, so I'd rather they kept the games as separate as possible, just set in the same universe.
I don't think the third is a committal problem but rather that they are switching game engines. It must be hard to carry across choices properly with the games using the same engine but a different one must be damn near impossible.

This was my answer. Though in a serious note, I do hope Sten makes a strong appearance now that we have heard Qunari are an available race to play. Could be a strong storyline tie there or simply a new romance/bromance option.

I would also like to see the return of Ogrin, mainly because I just went through the Awakening DLC again and forgot how much fun he is.

I'd like to see Justice back on his own. Should be easy to explain that he completely overpowered Anders or kept control of his body after Anders died.

I'd love to see Sten again; I'm curious how the hornless Qunari will look with the new models. Also, I just loved the big guy. I'll be very sad if I'll have to wind up killing him like I did the Arishok. I'm also curious about Flemeth. I have no doubt she'll show up in this game, so far she's two for two. I want to know what exactly it is she's up to.

Let's see, who else... it's basically confirmed Sandal will be there, so that's taken care of. Varric is always good. Cassandra will be interesting, I'm interested to see how she and Varric will interact. I'd like to see Feynriel at least wave in passing, provided he's alive, of course.

Oghren! There must be Oghren. The second game did not have anywhere near the minimum Drunken Lecherous Steve Blum quota.

A lot of the ones I want to see have already been mentioned, so I'll add a new one: Zevran. His brief cameo in DA2 was pretty awesome (besides his face having changed). He's exceedingly genre savvy. He instantly recognizes that Hawke is the protagonist (possibly from having worked with one before) and surrenders immediately. If you decide to let him go, he helpfully assists in killing the assassins, including killing one with backhanded throwing knife and a snarky comment. Then he lets you go collect all the loot before asking to talk to you (most other NPCs jump right into the conversation after combat), and last but not least hooks up with Isabella (and Hawke, if willing) for fun. Zevran needs a way bigger fan base :D

I never got around to playing DA2... but if somebody told me Shale was reappearing in the next game, I might consider giving it a run.

I know, a DLC-only character is unlikely, but there's your challenge for getting my interest back Bioware :p

Thank you, I was trying to remember really hard what his name was.

Really enjoyed having Shale in the party, made me laugh couple of time with his remarks and it allowed me to never have to interact with that whiny little snot Alistair outside of the early portion of the game.

Let's bring back everyone but Anders! Seriously, that guy can "suck on a fireball," as he likes to say.

I'm most excited to see Sten, Oghren, Shale, Isabella, Varric, Leliana, Zevran, and believe it or not, Sebastian. I like rogues and people with big weapons.

Also I'm excited to see Sandal because you know that little bastard is going to be an ancient lord of death or something.

Morrigan, mainly because I want to know the outcome of the Dark Ritual choice at the end of DA:O.

Sadly none of them.

We aren't going to be able to import saves and are instead getting a choices generator similar to Genesis for Mass Effect.

I have a feeling that the choices are going to be very few and will push us to Bioware canon for the story, which unlike with Mass Effect they've strongly established in the spin-off media. Plus they've been quite bullish about how Leliana is still alive even if you cut her head off in the first game.
If you just to a next gen console, no, you can't import. Everyone else can though.

This is what is on offer to those who can and can't import: http://blog.bioware.com/2013/08/28/the-dragon-age-keep/
From what they've revealed, we get to alter out saves so that our "World State" can be exactly as we want it. It's also allows you to bypass bugs that allow characters to appear when they should be dead.
EDIT: And apparantly they're looking into just using it to import your saves via the cloud regardless, so lack of importing may not be a worry at all.
Apply for the Beta: https://dragonagekeep.com/

I don't think we know how exstenive it is as of yet though.

And they've said countless times that the player has there own canon and any stories will be based on the default canon which you get if you skip over DA:O and DA2.

As for characters I want to see?

Leliana, Alistair, Anders, Hawke, The Warden.

Whoever can fit into a role in the story that makes sense basically.
If the Qunari are a large prescence then I want to see the Arishok formerly know as Sten. Maybe even Tallis.
If the Crows have an appearance then I want to see Zev either hassling them some more or having taken over and is leading them on a more noble path. Imainge if you go in planning to recruit the Crows to help with the Rift and they task you with taking out Zev? Do you help Zev and lose an enire factions help in saving the world? Or kill the lovable little Elf?
And if Alistair does make an appearance as King, I want to see Anora either by his side or in his place if she's Queen as well/instead.
If we see Wardens and the Younger Hawke joined them I want to see them appear. Same if Logaihn is a Warden.

I could go on, but I won't...
