I was psyched to play a tolkien-esque fantasy setting with a bit of heavy music and large scale fighting off orc-like hordes and taking down a dragon.
Just to jump in here, and others may have already mentioned this later in the thread, but you do get into some pretty large battles later on, including ones with dragons.. at least one being exactly what you describe. Thankfully, you're not just fighting trios of brigands and bears all the way.

As for the appeal of the game being a nostalgic one, I can see that being the case to some extent but for myself I had never played any of the games that DA:O is a supposed successor to. My roleplaying history is pretty much tied up in jrpgs and a few table top sessions of DnD. The closest I got to the Baldur's Gate games was screenshots in a magazine.

I wanted to like it, but couldn't bare it. Half the time I found myself playing as the dog just to bite people's crotches. And that was the only way I could have fun.

I Love Bioware games, and honestly expect more from them then this. This game wasn't fun at all. I've seen 8 bit characters act more human then the NPCs, and honestly did not care for them. The Game felt like work, not fun. I had to sell it. I had never played a game that made me want to stop gaming.

And I'm getting sick of having Carth Onasi [http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Carth_Onasi] in my party (Alistair. See Also : Kaidan in Mass Effect, and Jacob in Mass Effect 2)
Are you sure it's not Garrus for both Mass Effect games? Though I don't exactly know what you mean. Something like the protagonist's buddy? Or maybe you mean that one annoying fool in that BioWare RPG. In which case I understand.
Yeah, I'm talking more about Bioware's favourite character design - the 'slightly emo for no good reason, but competent in combat and with a tedious backstory that really doesn't justify his consant moping' guy, who is almost invariably the first bloke who joins your party.

And in two cases is even voiced by the same actor (Carth Onasi in Knights of the Old Republic, and Kaidan whineypants in Mass Effect 1 & 2)

Carth has a pretty good reason...
his old mentor turned against the Republic and was responsible for the attack that left his wife dead and separated Carth and his son

I mean I have trust issues and the worst thing anyone has really done to me is not tell me she had a boyfriend and another something on the side before hooking up with me.

Hmmm...

He's certainly got reason to be narked off. I think it's the intensity of his (and his "descendants'") reaction that feels off.

Shouldn't he be angry (he's got a target for it and everything) rather than vague and mopey? It all just feels a bit too teenage!

Well im alittle biased on this topic, what with owning every DLC, beating every race, for both sexes atleast once.

I love it. Its a great game. that pretty much sums up all of my feelings about it.

I'm the exact same way... all I can really say is, don't worry if your team doesn't like what they say UNLESS they leave the party. You can always make them like you more with gifts. by the end of my game, without even really trying I had all of my team at 100%.
