Hey, this is for anyone who has completed Merrill?s personal quest ?a new path?.
##SPOILERS##

I have just started act III and entered Merrill?s house. She was crying over the loss of the dalish Keeper. I haven even spoken to her yet to receive the quest, but still had the closing dialog. Will I still be able to receive the new path quest later on, even though and repeat the dialog?
The DA wiki had this to say:
?The quest can completely break before it begins. Merrill will begin the closing dialog of the quest before the opening dialog, so even though the quest is started in the story, the game considers the quest closed.?
Does this mean I have lost the opportunity to do the quest, is there a way around this?
Please try to help me without revealing anymore spoilers though
Thank you

The same thing happened to me during my playthrough, and I will still able to complete her companion quest normally. I don't know what breaks it for some people but not for others, but in my case it worked fine.

Hope that helps.

apparently if your friendship/rivalry with her is too high it can trigger it early. but the quest should still work.

Funnily enough, I just read the fix for this (PC Only, not sure if that's what you're playing on) in my random popping around the DA Wiki.

First, BACK UP YOUR SAVES!! This fix can be chancy (as you're going into the dev console, which can bug things out).

Your saves will be found in Documents -> BioWare -> Dragon Age 2 -> Characters -> -> Saves

I would just copy/paste the whole "Saves" folder to a different location (e.g. Desktop) instead of just one or two saves.

Here's what the Wiki said to do:

There's a bug that prevents Merill's Quest to be done. When Merill is visited at her home, a cutscene immediately takes place. However, this is due to a bug/glitch, and will prevent getting her quest later on. The resolution is below.

1. runscript zz_mrl_debug
2. Select Main Quest
3. Select Act 3
4. Select 1 - Start Merrill Notify.

Quest has officially began, and Merrill can now be contacted in her home and quest can be obtained/completed. It is recommended that quests 'A Talking To' and 'On The Loose' are performed prior to using the console commands to stay with the chronology, and avoid immediate termination of those quests.
You can read it, and more on the Console, here: http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Console_%28Dragon_Age_II%29#Merrill.27s_Companion_Quest_-_Act_III

You talk to her, and can then do the quest, but the resolution to the quest is bugged if you romance her, in that the resolution comes before the quest. But you can still go do the quests she just resolved.

Yep if you get the closing act first just enter the house again after having a talk with the king of ferelden quest. This somehow resets the quest and makes you able to do the companion quest (i have done it that way).

The chat with Alistair isn't what causes the quest to commence, but simply entering the Viscount's Keep; it just happens to be that this is where Alistair wants to meet and the scene starts immediately upon arrival, so many folks don't get the quest notification until they've spoken with him.

So, yeah, just go to the Viscount's Keep and the quest should start.
