I know that trying to shoehorn games into specific genres can be unreasonable but this seemed like an interesting discussion topic.

So escapist is dragon age a RPG/RTT hybrid, RPG with RTT elements, just plain RPG or another genre entirely.

Never heard of an RTT before.
Real Time Tactics it is a subgenre of Real time strategy where there usually isn't resource collection so games like World in Conflict would be part of this genre.

For me the combat mechanics in an RPG are irrelevant so long as they are modeled after the character's stats. RPGs since their birth have always implemented different combat mechanics and while most have been turn based, it is only because you can't have 8 people shouting shit in unison at the DM. As far as video games go, what is important is the social construct and environment involved in an RPG. Video game combat has the ability to be more "on the fly" with input than a DM as it can process multiple things at once.

I personally would say Origins is more RPG than anything else. Dragon Age 2 however, due to its inconsistent and detached environment, makes it a hybrid. If Kirkwall was more of an actual environment than a couple zones that are "said-to-be" linked, I would call it more RPG as well. But DA2 is more about just having you fast travel directly from 1 quest and combat to the next with some social construct thrown in.

Every good RPG should have RTT or some other genre/sub-genre in it. That's what makes it an RPG. Otherwise it wouldn't work as a video game with graphics. Might as well just go back to the tabletop and use your own imagination if it didn't have anything to add of it's own.

A what? RTT? Are you making up genres?

It's an RPG. It's both real time and turn based (which is nothing new - FFXII did it better) DA is not a very good RPG IMO. But an RPG nonetheless.

Never played that game, so I don't know what it means. But RTT sounds too similar to RTS which is an ACTUAL genre (Strategy and Tactics are almost interchangeable in video game context - they didn't call it FF:Strategy or Strategy:Ogre, but they are SRPGs...)
wikipedia is your friend as is google :p

Dawn of war 2 multiplayer can also be considered rtt.

It just feels wrong to call dragon age/baldur's gate/icewind dale rpgs because they feel a lot more tactical than most rpgs.

Hmmm actually that makes sense RPG is mechanic so you have to have another type of game attached to it to make it an actual game. Even a cooking game could be considered an rpg if you could get better through repetition or in game effort and it had a decent story with character development.

You have given food for thought my friend.
