In the game of Reign of Fire you can play as the Dragons, but you fight against them in some levels, and so it screws the theme up as you don't know who to root for, and the game in fact instilled a deep hatred for Dragons in me.

I like it when you get a dragon as a good guy. They can make good villains, but they can also make interesting as good characters as well. One of the main heroes in the book I'm writing is a dragon. He is the most innocent member of the heroes because a magical gem was teleported inside of his brain by accident and as a result he became very child-like and uninteligent, but gained the ability to shrink at will. Of course, there are also evil dragons who do evil deeds as well, but there are just as much good dragons as bad.

Dragons as good guys work well, as well as Dragons as the bad guys. Although I can't really think of any works where a Dragon is the main villain (aside from the Spyro series), Dragons always seem to be henchmen or pets to main villains.

Ether way I'm going to write a bunch of short stories that have both evil and good Dragons in it (but it isn't actually based on Dragons).

I prefer the aloof, neutral dragons. The ones for whom comparing their intelligence to ours would be arrogant of us. The ones who are above the petty conflicts of psychotic hairless apes who clad themselves in metal and kill each other with pointy sticks.

They made interesting villains in Gothic 2 although I prefer when they are ancient and wise beings that watch over the lesser races

Reighn of Fire...
That movie had NOTHING but dragons as the main villians, up to the point where they drove humanity close to extinction, and are now living post apocalyptic style in improvised citys and are all hungry because the dragons regluarely flame all their fields.
Also features badass mercenarys going on a dragon hunt.
And my most favorite "things to quote" line:
"Have you noticed all the dragons you encountered are female?" "No, there is not much time to look if it has a penis when you run away from something trying to eat you."
