Surprised I hadn't seen anything at all about it on here (not in random threads or its own thread.), but Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will be on steam for 29.99 USD in a few days, and I remember years back thinking that was one game I would've liked to check out had it not been a console exclusive at the time. (my consoles went to shit, so I sold them before they were worth nothing.)

Any opinions on the game? Back when it came out it seemed like it had overall good reviews, but I don't remember the finer points of pros/cons at the moment, and I'm curious to see if it'll be another dark souls where it is night and day on controller vs mouse+ kb in user friendliness.

[HEADING=3]For added discussion, are there any games from last gen you didn't get to check out, but would love to come to pc?[/HEADING] (whether it's a possibility in happening or a cold chance in hell, doesn't matter.)

I've played the free online DD and from that I'd say it works much better with controller though I personally don't have problem with this.

For game I wanted to see ported?
Well DD was one. There was also Bloodborne, Journey and maybe TLOU. I think there were some more but I can't recall them right now

The game is a tons of fun if you're more interested in gameplay than story. The story does a few interesting stuff but there's not much there, similarly the world is just basic fantasy.

Where it really shine is the gameplay aspect. You have a bunch of special technique that you can use at the cost of stamina along with normal basic attack but you can also grab opponent and against the bigger enemy that mean you get to climb on them and can attack there weak spot, a bit like shadow of the colossus lite. Some of the enemy can fly in the air so climbing on them is the only way for melee class to hurt them consistently. You can also attack different part to hamper them, like shooting out the wing (especially with ice attack) to make them crash and such. It also has an interesting health system, where losing health reduce your current health but also your total (for a smaller amount) until you rest at an inn. This mean getting hurt in fight isn't something you can just heal and shrug off but.

Another unique aspect is the pawn system, you create one pawn (side kick) but then can recruit two other from internet, the two pawn you recruit are the one other player created. The pawn can learn stuff about environment and certain enemy and once they certain stuff they'll tell you about it and will fight the enemy the right way.

There's 6 advance class and they play really differently. A mage feel a lot more like a mage than ranger who just happen to shoot fireball. Eventually you can summon huge tornado that pick every small object and enemy and throw them around the environment. There's also a magic archer who can use short cast time spell that have interesting effect, one create a giant flare for fighting at night (Night is really dark, it's not just a blue filter on screen) one shoot a bunch of bouncing arrow that are devastating in close quarter, one literally set you on fire so you can hurt enemy just by standing close to them.

If you would like to see a more westernized action-JRPG: fantastic combat (Almost just as good as the Souls series), decent difficulty, great boss fights and awesome music, you will love this game. The story isn't very interesting as it's pretty cliche but it doesn't take too long in between adventures. There are 9 classes, obviously all have pros and cons but I never felt like any classes were useless, they're all viable. Did I mention the combat is fantastic ?
while I do love a good story/cast in my games, I definitely don't need it (I adore mount and blade: warband, and that game is pretty much played purely for the gameplay.)

The gameplay does sound like it'd be something I'd enjoy, so I'm interested to try it, and with the decreased price it will probably be bought sooner rather than later.

I wish there was actual coop as well added even though I do like the pawn system. I prefer my pc games to be coop able because its the only system I share with my friends that can play online. (We all have other systems as well but no subscription like PSN or Xbox Live)

For the additional discussion, Since it seems like Final Fantasies are getting PC port now I really want the full Kingdom Hearts Collection to come to PC, Replaying it after getting both 1.5 and 2.5 at black friday I really want to get one of my friends in to it, Also I would hope a modder or mod community springs up around it and would produce some great game play additions and over hauls. Especially KHII, I can see someone getting really creative adding more or remixing the combat and abilities.

Well, since you asked...

Never have I played a game with so many gaping flaws, yet one that I would so wholeheartedly recommend. Dragon's Dogma was just so much FUN!

The game starts with the standard Mage, warrior, rogue template of modern fantasy, then goes off in its own unique directions, and after an introductory period, allows you to change classes with little effort, encouraging you to try everything.

Thr game had one of the best, most extensive character creation systems I've ever seen in a game, both for you and your main pawn, and I got extremely attached to both characters.

The monsters are fantastic! One of my favorite mythological creatures, the griffin, is here, and so is the Hydra, Cyclopes, chimera, trolls, and some awful thing called a cockatrice, and others I'm forgetting.

I only play as a rogue, but the fighting mechanics are extremely well done for each rogue type, with their own specialized attacks and abilities. It's possible to do ability combos with the different specialties.

The story and world? Eh, they needed a lot of work. It's not that the story is bad, but it's not well paced, and it's possible to lock yourself out of missions that add context to the backstory of this world. The story is actually designed to be played through more than once, and it was only near the end of the second playthrough that everything clicked and I had a few 'whoa' moments. I actually thought it was far more thoughtful and metaphysical than the far more acclaimed Bioshock Infinite. It helps that I actually game a crap about these two characters rather than the repulsive main character of BI. Also, the game's not over when you think it is. You're thinking "all will be well," then the next phase of the game starts and you think "maybe all won't be well."

I'm not one of those folks who make a fetish out of game difficulty, but your butt will be thoroughly kicked at first. Hilariously, the game makes it quite clear that there are times when you aren't going to win a fight, so you'd better haul ass and RUN! Humbling, but a good life lesson.

And I'm still not conveying just how much FUN this game was to play! How many truly epic, memorable gameplay moments it provided. There was the first time my low-level party got caught out of town at sundown (don't run out of lamp oil), and we had to stand back to back to fight off the nighttime nasties that stalked us. Then there was the knock down, drag-out fight we had with a troll in a mine. How about fulfilling a simple, zombie-hunting bounty at night (the only time they come out) when my overconfidence almost led to disaster? Or how my party got jumped in the the dark by the chimera? (Needed a change of underwear after that one). Or, on my second playthrough , when the griffin was about to get away, and I impulsively jumped on his back, and my entire party JUMPED ON with me? I didn't know they would do that! Or when I used a magic targeting system in the dark to track enemies and it lit up, indicating we were surrounded by bad guys that we couldn't see...

There's more, lots more, but I think you get the idea. The games many, many flaws just don't compare to its strengths. Be patient, give it a chance, and I bet you'll love it!

But seriously, Google the romance system before you begin, or you might end up with uncomfortable, yet amusing results at the final battle!

On the negatives, the world-building is well, not even existent for the most part. And the story is mediocre and poorly presented when it does rear its head up from time to time. The encounters also aren't random (though day/night/postgame do switch stuff up, and some stuff seems to be a rarer chance to spawn, despite always spawning in the same spots).

On the plus-side, the actual combat and gameplay is fun fun and more fun. I'd say the best ARPG combat of the Dogma/Skyrim/Souls (No offense, the slow pace just dragged it all down for me, it never felt intense enough for action) trio that came out at the time.

The crafting is kind of hit and miss, there's depth to it, but the confusing interfaces and sheer amount of inventory management to use it are kind of an anchorweight.

Multiplayer *options* also felt like a missed opportunity. The pawns were a nifty idea, but the AI is a letdown more often then not, making you wish the owner player could just possess them and play alongside or something.

I never got around to finishing Dragons Dogma. I think I went into the end game at too low a level and ended up not being able to grind effectively without spending huge sums for properly leveled pawns. Still very excited to play it on PC, though.

As for other last gen games I'd like to see on PC? Drakengard 3 would be one. I stopped playing it on PS3 because the framerate drops are horrible once you get into a decent sized scrap, which means some boss encounters are much harder than they need to be.

The port is by QLOC, the team most notably behind the excellent Resident Evil 6 port. They seem to be Capcom's go-to PC port team, and they've done good work to date. They're especially good about translating Capcom games to mouse and keyboard.

Good combat covered in shit.

Mostly shit visually.
No fast travel system (unless they added it in Dark Arisen).
NPCs constantly (and I do mean constantly) spout repeating dialogue.
No story worth mentioning. Generic setting too.
Inventory is a cluttered mess.
Monsters respawn in the same types in the same places.

So you end up spending most of the game travelling back and forth across the same parts of the map fighting the same respawning enemies and listening to the same lines of dialogue.

But the combat really is nice! You can cling onto a griffon's back and shank the shit out of him as he tries to fly away. And you can pick up goblins and throw them off cliffs.

Then you can come back 10 minutes later and shank the exact same griffon and punt the exact same goblins.

From last gen? Let's see here... Journey, bayonetta, xenoblade chronicles and vanquish. When ignoring that one requirement: also bloodborne, bayonetta 2, xenoblade chronicles X, the pokemon games, bravely default, and more final fantasies including 15 if it turns out any good. Not that I'd mind a pc port should it not of course, I'd merely no longer care about it.

Just want to clarify this part, most everything else is pretty accurate though.

There is fast travel in the game, although you create that travel spots yourself with a certain item. It looks like a large, possibly floating crystal that you can buy (or maybe even find a couple as loot later on in the game) that you put down somewhere on the map, and it becomes a fast travel spot, as long as you have a certain stone item in your inventory. Wish I could remember the names, but it makes more sense when your already in game.

I remember putting about 3-4 around key travel areas, while still giving myself some walking distance to run into monsters and keep things interesting.

I definitely recommend this game though, even if it has it's flaws. The Character creator is pretty involved, and even allows you to make your character a child, which has some gameplay elements as that character size can squeeze into areas adults cant. The armour sets in this game all look fairly good, and you get capes. CAPES. The combat is really great fun too, at least for the melee builds, because smacking things feels good in this game, and getting to climb up onto enemies (And the final boss too) feels so good, especially as a rogue who gets an ability to stab repeatedly when your climbing an enemy. Never played the mage, but the magic I have seen was impressive, and If I remember right, some magic can double as platforms, so if someone cast high level ice magic, you get a little time to climb up and jump off of it for an aerial attack. And I would say it's combat rivals the souls series in it's quality, you just aren't dying in 2-3 hits so you get to enjoy yourself more.

Oh, this game also has NG+ mode, except I dont think it actually buffs enemies like Souls games do, it mainly gives you the ability to try new routes and go for side quests you missed as you improve your characters stats even more.

My sister bought Dragons Dogma for our Xbox, then sold it before I had a chance to play it. I'll probably check it out when it goes down in price a bit. If the combat is as good as everyone says it might even hold my attention.

As for games I'd like to come to PC- Xenoblade Chronicles X. I've only recently started playing Xenoblade Chronicles on my 3DS, but it's already easily one of the best RPG's I've ever played. That in a Science Fiction setting sounds dope. Actually the number of games I want on the Wii U is approaching the point where I might even be able to justify buying one- at least if it goes down in price after the NX is announced/released.

This game actually has a brilliant story. Like, Souls-level meta shit going on. Unlike DS it's horribly presented, pacing is all over the pace and it's easier to completely forget it. Wasted potential there.

Everyone already mentioned the badass combat so I'll just add this: It's incredibly well scaled. I'm a level 200 Magick Archer who leveled up as an Assassin all the way. In non-nerd this means I have nearly maxed out physical damage and hefty enough reliable Magick Damage to be able to headbutt the game in the gonads. And even though I am godlike to the point I can instagib the "regular" game mobs by standing near them with a passive damage aura, I can go and find setups that kick the crap out of me in Postgame and BitterBlack island. And these same mobs that give me trouble right now, I had to unlock them at level 100 with much weaker gear. And yet it was still doable. It never stops being challenging or fun in that regard.

It's a massive diamond in the rough.

The combat is probably the best of any action RPG (that I've played). Just running around and jumping is incredibly satisfying. None of the usual stiff action RPG controls here, it feels as fluid as playing a Devil May Cry game. No other game puts you in the shoes of a Lord of the Rings cave troll battle like this one. And there are cave trolls in this game, and when you fell one it feels like a genuine accomplishment. And then there's the cyclops battles...

I've only ever played the Rogue and Wizard, so I can't comment on how the Warrior plays, but those two are a joy. The Rogue makes you feel like the the nimblest little Legolas, and the next tier Ranger turns you into Robocop. Meanwhile, the Wizard/Sorcerer job lets you summon freaking meteores and tornados, and it looks as awesome as it sounds.

The character creator is very indepth, where you can be almost any character you want to be, from a scrawny, 4-foot little kid, to an 8-foot tall fat guy, and everything inbetween. And instead of sliders it has simple, easy to read pictures for configuring your facial features. You can even modify your arms and legs to either be really short or long.

It also handles darkness better than almost any other games I've played. When it gets night it's pitch-fucking-black, and the only thing you can see is 3 feet in front of you and a vague horizon where the tree tops meet the sky. And that's with a lantern.

On the other hand...

The story is pretty non-existent, your companions never shut the fuck up EVER, the world map is rather small, there's no fast travel, and there's very little mission structure to the game. Overall the gameworld feels pretty small and very uneventful.

It's a great game, one of my favourites of last gen, even with all its flaws.

I'd highly recommend it. I will be picking it up again myself. Never could complete the Dark Arisen dlc though, it was over souls level difficulty in places.

I'll probably get it after we hear if it is a good port or not. I'm hopeful for mod tools as well.

I didn't really enjoy the game. The combat is alright I suppose but the camera is awful and bounces all over the place during fights and so do the mandatory 'pawns' that constantly get in your way and won't ever shut up. Also it takes too fucking long upgrading your character and the combat isn't fun enough to grind. This wouldn't be a problem if enemies(espescially) bosses didn't often have multiple life bars and chipping away at them with the fidgety controls, clumsy camera and annoying pawns just became a chore real quick. Add the fact that the game doesn't really provide any incentive to keep playing. There is no story to speak of(and no, not like in the Dark Souls fashion) and there is pretty much no variety in locations; you just traverse the same hillside pathways and underground caverns over and over.

In general I found the game uninspired and just not really fun to play. I can see what they were trying to go for with this game and Capcom should certainly have had the legacy to pull it of but they didn't succeed. Atleast in my opinion. :p That game Deep Down looked more like my cup of tea but unfortunately it seems Capcom have silently cancelled it.

I played it when it was rather new and thought it was a lot of fun(though the long distances and pawn shouting got annoying as fuck), but when I tried to replay it about a year ago it felt very outdated and sluggish. I'll probably pick it up eventually, but I'll wait for a large sale.

As for the added discussion: Destiny. More like current gen, but gief ffs! The Borderland games are among my favorites and games with that type of gameplay are rare as fuck. I need to try more!
