I would definitely befriend because saying that you have a dragon as a friend trumps any other kind of animal partnership (the exception being dinosaurs).

Defeating a dragon in single combat is said to be among the greatest feats of mythical heroes. However, befriending a dragon to learn ancient mysteries would have its own rewards. Which would you do?
Who's a fluffy wuffy? *ROOAAARRR!!!!!*
That's right, you are!

That's my answer :)
P.S. I'd do the same with a spider the size of an elephant

In the event that dragons were real I would also be a necromancer so I'm going to kill the thing and bring it pack as my pet. Dogs are overrated...

I think that one picture will say it all:

A dead dragon isn't half as much family fun as a live one.

This should work out fine until the first good 25 man raid comes along.

Depends on if its intelligent. If it's unintelligent, then kill it, its not going to be your friend. If it's intelligent then try to reason with it. If he wants to be your friend, then hazaa, if he wants to eat you then kill him. If he want to be left alone, leave and come back later.

Befriend!

I get a loyal companion, a free ride almost anywhere and almost constant protection.

All good incentives.

Befriend, there is no other answer, really. Having a dragon flying mount would just overpower any glory you may have from slaying it.

Befriend. The way I see it, he'd say good things about you to his dragon bro's and you will be able to RIDE HIM! C'mon guys, riding a dragon! Tell me that doesn't provoke something in your pants

You get to pick, maybe, which leg of your pants your fear runs down.
I'd go with the "down both legs, front and back, both orifces...at high flow"

Defeat and consume it's essence and learn it's secrets that way. I can then turn into a dragon myself.

Yes. I can consume the essence of Dragons. I'm that badass.
In their tongue, he is Dovahkiin. DRAGONBORN!
So weird noone made that comment yet :p
I was waiting for it ^_^

Truth be told, dragons will have you for lunch. Then again, slaying a dragon and dipping yourself in it's blood is said to give you it's mythical long lifespan and it's powers.

Eh, I'd still tuck tail and run to be honest, not that it would matter alot since humans are slow x3
Or maybe present him with some shiny gifts?

After playing Drakan all those years ago I would love to have a friendly dragon.

Spike is my pet dragon's name. He's good at writing and sending messages.
Dear Princess Trollestia, today I managed to make friends with a full grown dragon, and I must say I would have much preferred him as my slave then tiny Spike.

Always your faithful student,
Twilight Sparkle.

P.S. For the New Lunar Republic!
