To all the people telling this poor guy that class is irrelevant or that the thief is the best starting class, please stop. The guy is asking for a build.
The basic mechanics rely on scalable stats. Different weapons scale better with different stats. Obviously, most spells scale with magic, most miracles scale with faith, likewise enchanted and magic arms scale with magic stat, and divine and occult weapons scale with faith. Certain weapons have modifiers which affect different enemies more.
The important things about dark souls can be summarised as follows:
A. Diminishing returns- Generally the marginal impact of stats is small after 40 (if you plan on 2 handing, strength can go to about 50).
B. Items, and spells can all be bought, but it is usually a waste buying a spell unless it doesn't scale or you are leveling the scaling stat for your catalyst.
C. 40 endurance, no more, no less (note certain magic based or backstab builds use less, but those are advanced play styles).
D. Your soul level is important for online play. You won't find many matches past about 120, which can make various covenants rather had to level.
So I guess you could say but 40 in endurance, 40 in the stat you want to play like (str, mag, dex, faith), other stats to the minimum to use gear you want (protip: weapons that have requirements above 20 for str AND dex are bad, dont use them). Rest goes to vitality, and try not to level above 120.
Have fun!
